What is there to explain? Each mem controller lane is 64 bits, so with a 384-bit bus you have 6 lanes. You want the same amount of memory in every lane. There are no 1.666 GiB ICs, so some lanes will gave 2 GiB, and some others 1 GiB. Or Nvidia could be lying again and the bus is actually 320 bit.

You want the same amount of memory on every channel in order to have full bandwidth over your entire memory capacity. To get full bandwitch, you have to access all of the memory in parallel. If you have 4x2GiB + 2x1GiB, then 6GiB will be fast, but the other 4GiB will only be able to use 4/6 lanes and get roughly 33% less bandwidth.

(The 970 was actually much worse than this - the last 0.5GiB were wired to a single lane)

For 10gb it either lacks 2 ic's (so 10 1gb ic's end up with 32bit x 10 = 320bit), or some are 512mb ones, and it can't sport full bandwidth

those traces on the PCB and integrated in the GPU don't magically go away just because 2 of the memory chips weren't soldered onto the board.
