They look nice.

/g/ thinks they're cyberpunk hackers who need a portable mechanical keyboard to fit in their bug-out bag.
>>
>>57488036

1) Numpads are generally useless unless you are in finance or accounting.

2) Smaller form factor means mouse is closer to keyboard, so let travel time when going from typing to mousing.

3) More portable, easier to carry around and lighter.

4) Looks nice, sleek, and minimalistic.

This is true, but when you have to do a lot of math on a computer not having a numpad is probably something that occurs in hell.

87 keys is the lowest I can go.

>>57488276

Do you seriously enter numbers on the number row above the letters? I haven't used those to enter numbers in like 20 years, I use the numpad exclusively for that.

>>

>there are anons who can't touch type using the number row
Using napkin calculations, moving your hands to the keypad and back takes half a second round trip. Entering a digit using number row takes 0.1 seconds more than using the numpad (very optimistic). Having a numpad makes reaching for the mouse take 0.5 more seconds round trip.

Thus, the benefit of using a numpad is
(average number of digits when typing numbers * 0.1) - ((times using mouse + times entering numbers) * 0.5)

For most people, this is very negative, and that's not counting the cost of lost desk space, portability, etc.

sup /g/

Now that we are on the subject of keyboards,
Can someone recommend me a keyboard like pic related ?

Pic related is a PS/2 Keyboard circa 2000.
What i like about the keyboard :

>wheel on the left side is for scrolling websites/documents
>arrows are for going back and forth webpages.
>wheel on the bottom is the audio control (up/down). pushing the wheel will mute the audio.
>the space aroudn the bottom wheel is very ergonomic for positioning your hands. typing/gayming
>buttons below the directional arrows are quick access for copy, cut, paste
>buttons near the directional arrows are shortcuts for alt tab & alt F4
>Nice music function buttons on the top right corner.

so /g/ can someone recommend me a mechanical swithc keybaord that i can use to replace the current one ?

thanks in advance.

Why would I lie about shitty video games?
That trackball was great for games.

I used it all the time in Killing Floor especially. All dem headshots.
I miss Skynet Elite. Only good KF server.
TF2 as well, before Valve ruined it with hats.

But I preferred it much more for doing art, 3D modelling, programming and writing stuff.
The latter 2 only if I was moving stuff around a lot since I changed the 3 extra buttons to contextually aware hotkeys with Autohotkey.
I made the 3 hotkeys send ctrl+ F13/14/15, then used AHKs window detection to change based on what i was doing.
So fucking useful.
Having undo on the trackball when drawing was great.
3D modelling too. (plus sub-divide button and something else I forgot)

I was going to open it up and wire it up to get rid of the shitty need for batteries and receiver.
I fucking hate wireless shit.
That trackball was the most polarising thing I've owned.

The real question is why are there not more keyboards with layouts like this? The keypad fully contains all functionality of the navigation keys if you switch numlock off.

Narrower keyboards are more ergonomic with a mouse. Full size are good if the year is 1980 and the mouse or gui hasn't been invented yet.

I really don't see the problem with the CM board. You pres Home it takes you to the top, you pres page down it takes down. If you want to use a numpad then press a single button and there you go. Literally less then a second of work to insert a few numbers. Besides how often do you use your numpad?

When numlock is turned on, what happens when you press 2 on the numpad? The color scheme suggests arrow up but intuition suggests 2
>>
>>57498579
Obviously it would be Up.
Why would it be anything else?

The keyboard defines these toggle keys.
Software can interrupt it and change it if it chooses to, but anything that relies on those exact assignments will fuck up. (like say, a program that will move Up when you press 8 regardless of numlock state)
I've not come across any program to do that, though.
>>
>>57498579

They make me reach further to use my mouse. I wouldn't mind it if they put them on the left hand side, but they never fucking do. So I just get one without a numpad and use a separate one.

What about thumbs? Even if for some reason you don't want to use thumbs, you would have to move your fingers far less (only two keys not covered by your fingers) and thus type faster.

>>57488036
I was thinking of getting a tenkeyless keyboard because I could place it further to the right without interfering with my mouse. The way I have things set up no I can't have a fully comfortable position both when typing and when using the mouse. I can have my elbow on my chair's arm rest when using the mouse, but if I want to type I need to move my right arm to the left, as such I can't use the armrest in a natural and comfortable position. If I removed the numpad, I could essentially shift the keyboard further to the right without hampering mouse movement space and I would be able to both type and use the mouse while having my elbow on the armrest.

I could then get a separate numpad and place it on the left, I'm sure I could get used to that and since I never use it for extended periods of time (maybe punching in some IP address and that's it) comfort wouldn't matter much. I can't find any decent tenkeyless keyboards where I live though, so I'm still using a full size model.
>>
>>57500172
You just have to position your hand correctly. Though the thumb rest awkwardly and may not be as fast because of that.
What about other points though?
>>
I love the num pad but it's more ergonomic to not have it when using a keyboard and a mouse.
>>
>>57488036
It's just a fad. Mechanical became too vanilla too fast, now the hipsters have moved onto tiny keyboards.

In some cases, smaller keyboards could be more practical, but for most people it's all about having something different.

I suppose that's what happens to tech after it becomes 'functionally perfect' more or less.

numpads are fucking terrible unless you for some reason still type tons of numbers like some chink accountant.

the numpad is inherently not ergonomic for anyone using their right hand for the mouse. of you center your lettered keys with your screen like you should, you encroach on the space for your mouse and pad, which mean you either have to move them further to the right which fucks with ergonomics even more or just run your mouse into the side of your keyboard all the time.

getting rid of the numpad allows you to have centered lettered keys, while allowing enough space for the mouse or anything else on your right side.

>b-but I have my stuff placed far apart and all over the place on my desk and I do fine!

no. you've been doing it wrong all along and you only shitpost on 4chan so you never noticed.

even tenkeyless isn't enough for me, it still fucks with ergonomics some by having a space on the right side for the page and arrow keys. 75% or less is what you need.

This whole thread needs to fucking chill. I can shut down any argument in this thread right now.

I bought this keyboard over a decade ago at Best Buy and I've used it ever since. Need the 10 keys for math or some shit? Go for it?

Need bank of macro keys on the other side? Got it?

Need more space? Fucking guess what.

I don't get it. I use numpad every day. How people can live without it is beyond me. It's just so FAST

I used to configure emulator buttons on the numpad before I got an USB controller. Pic related (in tandem with cursor keys as d-pad) generally worked much better than the retarded default emulator control schemes which all had you control the "d-pad" with your right hand and the "buttons" with the left.

That's even much worse than >>57494330. For a touch typist, the gap between G and H must be aligned with the center of the screen.

>The left end of my keyboard and my mouse are barely more than shoulder width apart

This, I INTENTIONALLY space my shit further apart because I find them to be uncomfortably close.
>>
>>57494273

How tiny are you? With my full size keyboard my shoulders span from the left side of the keyboard over to my mouse pad. My arms sit almost parallel with my shoulders when using the keyboard and mouse..

Any deals on keyboards for black friday or cyber monday?

A keyboard is a fucking tool. Why would you fuck yourself by getting rid of extra buttons? Are you really this retarded? Jesus fucking christ, if you think losing buttons looks sleek and cool you're a fucktard. Plain and simple.

>but anon I don't use those buttons very often and I need to take my keyboard everywhere I go.

No you don't faggot fucker. Keyboards are literally 15 dollar pieces of input hardware that you can find anywhere you go.

Like everything else, it stems from gaymurs. I don't remember the last time I used anything to the right of the enter key in a game, with the exception of printscreen.

Buckling springs are one of the most durable switches ever made, even more durable then cherry. Plus you can get them new for like 80 bucks. Are you that much a rubberdome fanboy, or are you just some poor third world-er.?

Just look at the catalog and you'll see a plethora of anime images. If you hate Japanese culture so much why are you here?

I'm not even going to give you a (You)

amazon usually puts everything at a $20 discount when it comes to mechanical keyboards. There are some deals right now like the Tomko for 30 bucks.

Last year there was the Rosewill rk900 for 60 bucks, which is what went for.

Overall its not a bad keyboard. The default keycaps are meh and there really isn't much to say for the build quality other then its solid. Some of my older rubberdomes had better construction, but for a $60 cherry mx mechanical keyboard there really isn't all that much for options

On AS/400, this button is the down arrow. The center one is equivalent to execute / run routine.
