Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

How might one keep a solar or physical charge for a laptop during a 3-4 back (mid) country trek? I plan to defend my PhD thesis and do a northbound traversal of the Appalachian Trail. I'd need to respond to comments/revisions during the various town stops or any campground in cell phone range. If tethered to my phone, Latex revisions and SSH to simulation servers are trivial. I currently run a 2012 Macbook Air but I'd be willing to buy a T420 despite the weight for durability. The real question is how to charge it while hiking 12 hours a day.

Durability isn't the problem, but multiple batteries would be an advantage as you could charge them at stops with power then toss them in ziplock bags.

Solar innawoods ain't happening, especially on the move.

I'd bring a small Thinkpad like an x200 with a low wattage CPU and an SSD to conserve power, and three or four new spare batteries.

Alternate option, an Android tablet with a Latex editor app and a power bank or three.

They do make USB tier chargers that use walking or ambient solar en energy. Not sure about mechanical charging but if I'm pulling ultrabook/tablet energy it should be doable if esoteric and expensive an orthodox user. They don't need that many Amps or Watt/Hours and it's all DC to the port.

Multiple batteries mean slower hiking so the something 12inch and X series might even be better since it's small but supports a full character set for command line syntax.

Most common products seem to assume you are in a car based on multiplicity of "bricks", weight or cables since manufactures are assuming AC from the socket or using a DC source to feed a device's default AC cord.

Buying from Ebay, seller has 98$ positive with over 1000 sales. It's free delivery and very close to my city. Want to use it for GNU/Linux. Thoughts?
>>
>>57481472
My personal is a t420s. I can give you pros and cons.

Actually just going to give cons, pros are pretty obvious. Cons are battery is meh, 3hr max with a new battery. Battery slice is expensive and doesn't add much. No GPU. Also not sure why the seller says 1366x768. Should be 14x9. I don't think they even made the laptop in that resolution. Overall good buy, had no problems with linux or windows
>>
>>57481498
Battery life and no GPU don't really bother me, won't use it for gaming and i won't be going anywhere without power for more than 3 hours i reckon. I'll buy it then, hopefully it arrives soon. Cheers mate.

Hey /tpg/, do you happen to know which ThinkPad models are Coreboot-able? I know the Libreboot-able models are all C2D affairs, I'm looking for something slightly newer and I'd like to at least have Coreboot.

I think my ideal situation would be
>i7 T430 for SATA III and USB 3
>1080p IPS panel
>Coreboot
>9-cell
I'm not particularly worried about the T430's keyboard, it's not the abortion the early X1 keyboard was.

Lads, I've seen the X200 (era 2008), with a Core2 Duo P8600 2.4 GHz and 6GB RAM in rip-off Ireland. The mad man is selling it for €200, is even getting it for €100 a bad deal?
>>
>>57484467
I dont know about x200, but I bought my x201 i7 with 128SSD, 4GB RAM and 9cell battery together with docking station for 170e.
>>
>>57484506
First gen i7? Still a great bargin.

Mine will have slight more RAM than, a new SSD can be had and preferred for cheap and I'm likely to use it plug in at libraries/archives to use it as a glorified typewriter (with a lightweight linux OS).

How complicated is changing the audio jack on T420

Read a bunch of stuff of stuff and ended up finding a T420 with i5-2540/4GB of ram/250GB HDD/Win7 Pro with charger and fine battery on craigslist today for $130 dollars. Works perfect and I don't see any issues with it beyond slight physical wear. Wanted to thank you guys for these threads as I was really at a loss for finding a good small work laptop for a bit as I'm not as familiar with laptop stuff as I am with desktop PCs.

What's the secret to buying a refurbished thinkpad online? What are the signs to avoid?

I need to get a computer for work, something durable that can survive being on a construction site and other less-than-desirable environments and don't want to sink a lot of money into something that could be stolen.

But buying refurbished online has its horror stories. Are there any recommended sellers?

9-cell battery, 16gb ram, docking station, triple drive (msata ssd + 2hdds/ssds), quad core i7 cpu, egpu setup if you want to shove a desktop graphic card there and play games.
>>
Does anyone here do programming on a T420? Is it a good experience?
>>
>>57492044
Interesting, I figured it'd be a big hassle to switch to a higher end cpu and thought that it only had slots for the msata ssd and one hdd/sdd not two. I'm not interested in games beyond the occasional Dwarf Fortress as I just don't have the interest or time anymore. The i7 would be nice. I'm admittedly ignorant of what you mean by docking station.
>>
>>57492154
>it'd be a big hassle to switch to a higher end cpu
For the T420 it's only removing the keyboard, palmrest and 4 screws then swap the CPUs.

>slots for the msata ssd and one hdd/sdd not two
msata slot is at the back next to one of the ram sticks, 1 screw.
HDD1 is the main drive bay and HDD2 is replacing the ultrabay optical drive for a HDD caddy with the second or third drive.

That's pretty cool, I'll definitely be getting that too.
As far as the rest I appreciate that knowledge, I for some reason thought that switching out the CPU would have me messing with a new OS install and the like but I wasn't thinking fully. And switching out the optical drive for additional space for ssd/hdds wasn't something I was aware of. This purchase just gets better and better for me.

>>
>>57497592
>How can you /tpg/ stand your low-res 90's screen on 2016?

I use external monitors for content consumption/fapping compared to which all laptop screens are tiny and pathetic.

I use Thinkpads for durability, ease of mods/maintenance, their lovely docks, and because my rural power goes out often enough that a notebook battery makes a convenient UPS.

Pleb Pad screens are great for reading manuals and tech data. That's what they are for any why I scatter Pads without external monitors around my home and shop. Linux support makes it convenient to boot some from USB flash as shop PCs.

Pads are great for data rescue when working on other people's PCs. I keep a T61 with no hard disk and a box full of USB flash drive live WinPE and Linux OS along with adapter cables (for full height drives). A caddy lets me load new hard disks in my Pad and copy over files from the old disk in the drive bay or whereever. I used to do that shit with a desktop but Pads take less space.

>>57501077

you're getting chinked, a standard x220 with genuine battery, charger, mechanical hdd, and some amount of ram would be £80-100 then it's only a bit extra on top for the ssd (£40 for 160gb new), some extra memory and maybe £30-50 for a good condition 9 cell genuine battery, I wouldn't expect to pay more than about £150-200 sourcing all the parts myself but you could source a decent x220 for £100 off the bat and pay £40 for a 160gb ssd

The hardest part is sourcing all the components. Do as the video suggests and get a whole sacrificial T61, hunting for an individual motherboard is a bit tricky. For the host T60, your best bet is to look for a T60p, since they all had SXGA+/UXGA IPS, no XGA TN like the majority of T60s you'll find.

I purchased one for mine off Newegg. Cost ~$50, and ACPI told me it was at 100% capacity after a TLP recalibration. I get ~10-12 hours of battery life 100-0%, but I try to keep it between 40-80% for the long-term health of the battery.

only if you let it sit there on idle on lowest brightness maybe. My everyday experience was 1/3 that with x120e

Nah, that's with web browsing (50+ tabs in Firefox). I use Linux (various distributions) with TLP. Watching high bitrate videos (anything higher than 1080p youtube) will cut it down to about 6-8 hours, but 4chan, news articles, Discord, duckduckgo, and various forums on Firefox will let it run for ages. I use 2 batteries, one that came with it (ACPI reports 60% original capacity), and the newer one I bought. I keep it set to 40-80% using TLP, and I get through a 2-hour class with my old battery before it drops below 40%. On my new battery, it only drops to around 60ish%. Note that it's just writing notes and using the college wifi, not doing anything like intense video processing or program compilation.

Forgot to mention, usually keep brightness 25-50% of maximum on the screen. It's actually bright for indoor usage, but the matte screen keeps 50-75% also somewhat usable outside, but I typically keep it at 100% when I'm outdoors. Also note that both batteries I have are 9-cell, and I use the i5 model x201.

Bought a second hand Lenovo Helix 1st gen for $400 in what looked like as new condition off eBay for $400. Touch screen/digitiser were a constant problem. 2 new screens, new motherboard and fucky Lenovo techs that cracked the plastic in 4 different places they finally agreed to replace it with a new X1 Yoga. Cheering because it has less than a month of warranty left now.

Is the new X line as sketchy as the other new ThinkPads?
And will I have the newest meme laptop on /g/?

On an R500 here. How can I rebind my FN key to my right control key? I was on a thread the other night and some anon said you can rebind the FN key in bios, but I couldn't find it even in the manual.

What's the best site for replacement parts?

I need a new battery for my T430. It holds a charge, but I'm only getting around 1.5-2 hours on average from it.
>>
>>57478895
No way. Around $150 is the ideal price.

Works on my machine

You're probably just using the wrong fucking drivers, asshole.
See if there's one specific for your phone model.

Ebay for everything but the battery, Newegg for the battery, and only use stuff that's listed as "Lenovo" and has all the stickers and stuff on it in the pictures.

I own one. X131e, used for general computer stuff when away from home, and playing some games at lan parties. Works great for what it is. I like it a lot.

Remember that the thing does weigh 1.8kg, so don't expect to carry it around like you would any old tablet.

yay I just scored 2x4 gigs of Hynix PC3-8500S RAM for 22€ from a guy who bought them accidentally! And they work on my X201!

it's true though, if you use it

Even with the old layout the typing feel has been shit since after the T60, but starting at the _30 series it's good again despite the shit layout

Anybody done this?

http://s.aliexpress.com/ziyumam6 Is this battery any good? Can't use ebay or newegg.
>>
>>57508889
>Can't use ebay or newegg
As someone who has the same issue and ordered a 9cell 55++ battery from AliExpress that turned out to have a fake serial number but real capacity for $58, stick with $50+ batteries.
>>
>>57508937
But 6 cell would be enough for me. I am good with any shit, I just don't want it to blow up or work under 2 hours.
>>
>>57509158
Then i guess it'd be fine, thought it was a 9 cell so seemed cheap but it was a 6 cell.
>>
>>57508608
honest to god that pic seems comfy as fuck, but the reality is it's not really as nice ;-;
