Is solus the new go to beginner friendly Linux distro?
>>
Why sacrifice the resources available for Ubuntu for any other beginner distro?
>>
>>57477029
Because it's more stable, ships with a better default DE which a beginner wouldn't want to mess with and change, Is faster in almost every way, and has a better package manager.

Only con I can think of is the tiny software repository compared to Ubuntu, but it has everything most normies will need and want.

How so?
And how so compared to other DEs?

>>57477810
Going from windows to any non shiet Linux DE would be massive, but I don't think that ~100MB you can save between various DEs is enough to fuss over.
Go with whichever one you like most and be happy with it.

You're the one who said it had optimizations. Are the rest of the distros really not supporting AVX2?
>>
Solus is great but i still like my ubuntu.
>>
>>57477937
no due to compatibility issues
solus does it automatically for you by choosing the right libs.

it does similar thing for steam by providing its own up-to-date and optimized runtime instead of that ubuntu 12.04 garbage provided by valve.

Solus has been gradually getting more popular over 2016, it's not a massive spike, but it's gone from 29 to 25 in distro watch since q2 2016.

I'm expecting it to continue this trend as it continually improves over time, but I hope it doesn't end up bloated and shitty like Ubuntu or Fedora.
>>
>>57477012
I really like it so far, been using it on my HTPC for a few weeks now and it's been great, even on my shit specs that Linux mint lagged on.

I wanted to use Solus but i'm too stupid to install things that aren't on the repo.

It sounds like a neat distro. If I was switching from Windows, I would probably try it.
But the truth is, I can never go back. I tasted the power of Gentoo, I felt the flexibility and control beyond my wildest dreams. I could never drop it for something that is gonna take away any of that power from me. Even now I'm lusting for more control, more flexiblity, more power. I want more.
I do really hope it takes off, though. From what I've read, they seem like they have more healthy views on the desktop than Ubuntu. Need more information to test whether it will stay on-course even when faced with popularity, but if it goes into the same direction, it would be a better newbie Linux than Ubuntu is.
I don't even hate Canonical, the guys did a lot more good than bad, but they are really freaking aliens sometimes.

Used Xubuntu and Kubuntu 4 years ago and Kubuntu was the fastest booting and working version of *buntu. You just must disable splash screens from everywhere (but remember this was 4 years ago, now I don't know if KDE has many splash screens like then).

I'll probably install it once they add Optimus support. I had to switch back to Windows from Ubuntu because a lot of things didn't play nicely with my T460P.
>>
I run an Arch system for luls and still use solus on my main laptop
>>
You autists are forgetting what makes ubuntu a good beginner distro.

When something doesn't work a newbie can just type "problem blah blah ubuntu" and get a buttload of ubuntuoverflow and ubuntuforum links explaining how to fix their problem.

The amount of troubleshooting help applicable to solus meanwhile will be just a tiny fragment of what ubuntu has.

The actual manager itself doesn't mean shit, it's the repo that people want. Hence why so many are Arch-dicklovers, because of the AUR. While I'm a Ubuntu user and think Arch is for autistic homos I get why they love that shit.

I use Ubuntu mostly because I find whatever I need in the repo and it's stable and works and I always get support when I need it. askubuntu.com is fucking amazing.
