I know a guy who, genuinely, actually, will fight with you for hours on end if you disagree with him, thinks that the packaged earpods are just fine for any purpose. I tried to get him to listen to a pair of cheap $15 earphones I picked up from Walmart and he would not have it any other way. His reasoning for this was "if Apple included it as the default as part of their own packaging, it must sound good with Apple hardware". And when I explained to him that the audio source doesn't matter, he fell back on the Apple can do no wrong meme.

I guess it could be like Xiaomi does and they have EQ presets built for their headphones that sound nice in Xiaomi / iOS devices

But I bought 4$ Panasonic Ergofits and compared them to a friend's earpods in my android out of curiosity. They're really not good headphones, and 4$ headphones shouldn't compare.

they literally haven't delivered a single unit, and i don't remember them announcing any sales figures, so there's not even room for anecdotal "i only see a few of them out in public so they must not be selling that well" commentary.

it's sort of shocking that apple is giving third party headphone manufacturers *this much* of a head start. it's either hugely confident of them (maybe wrongly, maybe rightly, so), or they really don't consider this a high priority.

they clearly stopped caring about displays, since they're no longer selling apple-branded displays. maybe down the road they're going to let someone else sell the earbuds under their own brand name, and just tell people to go buy those (the way they did with monitors).
