Lower your standards.

A top of the line computer you buy today won't be top of the line next year.

A midgrade computer you buy today will still be midgrade next year

depends on what you call futureproof.

mines kinda futureproof, atleast for 1440p 144hz.

i5-4690k @4.2~ish, h60i closed loop cooler.
32gb 1600mhz ram
2, 2tb drives, with a 250gb ssd for the os.
dual r9 390's 16gb of combined vram.
1000 watt psu
5 fans throughout a large case.
benq 1440p 144hz monitor. they only have one model for 1440p so i will leave that to anyone who cares to figure out.

dont forget to get really nice thermal paste. who gives a fuck void the warranty on your gpus, get some really nice paste on them though.

That's not how it works.

Bullshit.

If you're not a gamer then you could literally use a 10 year old computer just fine.

"Future proofing" is a meme created by the people that want you to buy their more expensive new hardware rather than previous year's hardware that is a fraction of the price but will serve your needs far better.

>Get a HEDT board

>Get literally any midrange GPU, they will run all fucking games just fine, or a used high end GPU

This assumes that:
- 4k gaming will remain a meme for years to come
- Intel will continue to offer shitty 5% improvements every year
- AMD will continue to fail

Do this and you will enjoy superior performance than any AMD based rig in the future and you will be safe in the knowledge that mr moremoneythansense with his i7 9999X in the future dosent have much of an advantage over your rig because of Intel 5% increase BS.

Pic related, my futureproof rig. Will be fine with the occasional graphics card upgrade for years to come.

Also just to add to this...

Disregard anyone's opinion if they use/recommend crossfire/SLI. Crossfire/SLI have never been particularly future proof and are always a pain in the ass. Most posts on forums whining about driver issues etc are almost guaranteed to be someone with crossfire/SLI or dual monitors or both. Weird niche setups get less support because less people use this shit. Buy 1 GPU. In the future, buy a better one when you need it.

Disregard if they have a quad core as well.

>quad core
>future proof

Pick one. We've been on quads for literally 10 fucking years, how much longer do you think this shit will last.

Is this good and future proof? Will it perform better than i7 of similar price?
>>

i5-2500k

>>57468428
there is no such thing as
>future proof
Either accept the fact that your pc will keep the same performance but the requirements on other stuff will keep on rising.
>in 20 years Chrome requires 16GiB of ram to even open 1 tab.
>firefox will require a 20core cpu
>>
>>57468428
You start by inventing a time machine
>>
>>57470540
Then surely the answer is to buy currently acceptable hardware and not be duped like a fucking moron?
>>
>>57470598
Yes, buy the most powerful at this time and it will last you the longest.
>>
>>57470598
More or less. Get something that's good, but not top of the line. Top of the line costs a lot and doesn't stay top of the line for long, maybe 6 months to a year. In 5 years time it's not going to make much of a difference whether it was top of the line when you bought it, so no real sense spending the extra money.
>>
>>57470087
>Nvidia cards
>futureproof

Will be outperformed by two 480s in crossfire two years from now.
>>
>>57470628
>most powerful

I clearly said "currently acceptable."
>>
>>57470691
>currently acceptable

If you want your machine to last 2+ years then get the most powerful.
>>
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/fBmqhq

How long will this last? And is it worth the price?
>>
>>57470708
Stop being a consumerist drone.

You do not need even half as much as that. If your PC is "out of date" after 2 years the issue isn't the PC, it's you.

Having a top notch processor and 32GB of memory wont save you from bloat, only Linux and a browser than blocks scripts can do that.
>>
>>57470719
For what purpose? If the most intensive thing you do is 1080p gaming, it'll last two or three years before you need to replace the GPU. The rest will almost certainly be good for a long time.
>>
>>57470741
Like i said, 2+ years

Im running a 4790k which i bought when it launched. Still in my system, but for the Gtx 780 i had.. i upgraded to a 1080 just a few days ago.
System still runs like butter.
16GiB when i built the system and i dont need more. I doubt that my next upgrade will be on the 7th gen i7. Maybe i will consider the upgrade on the 8th.
And since im using a 1080p monitor i doubt i'll upgrade my GPU even after 2 years. 4K meme needs to die.
>>
>How do I build a futureproof desktop

Only computer illiterates think such a thing exists, but if you use a quality case and PSU you can easily upgrade the mobo/CPU/RAM/GPU every year so they don't go obsolete.
>>
>>57470719
Depends on what you're using it for.

If it's for gaymen, the GPU will be fine for 5 years if you don't mind 1080p. Less if you're upgrading to 1440p and up and keeping up with AAA games. The CPU will be a good 10 years both gaymen and general purpose since the next die shrink will net a few percent of performance which is insignificant.

A good rule of thumb is if the performance leap of new hardware is 50% than your current hardware, it's a good time to upgrade. Some will push to 70-80%but it's subjective.

>>57469962
She's a snackbar, not a pooloo
>>
>>57470459
Yes its future proof.

Yes it will generally kick the shit out of most i7's except in muh gayming where it may get say 90fps and higher clocked i7 may get 110 fps. As long as its over 60 who the fuck cares, and if the i7 is only a quad then the xeon will win in games that use >4 cores.

However! That is an ES CPU! It wont work on a lot of boards. You want a LATE ES sample not an early one. You can tell late vs early by the sspec number.

e.g Haswell chips have ES sspecs that begin with QD, QE, QF, QG etc. QG is release or close to release. So all bugs ironed out. QD and QE will have bugs and are FAR less likely to work on boards, you may need to buy certain boards for these to work. Also BIOS updates can end up locking out your chip if support for early ES samples is dropped in the new BIOS update.

QH chips are early broadwell. Some people got a real bargain on the 22 core QHUZ chips but again they are still early ES.

If you cant be arsed with this stuff and need a 100% guaranteed to work chip get a used non ES xeon. Its what I did in the end although I was very tempted to get a 16 core ES broadwell for the same price as I paid for my 14 core non ES haswell.

Also this is my current PC. Bought in 2009 I believe for around sameish price. Maybe a bit less.
>>
>>57470886
Where exactly do you get used non ES xeon for affordable price??
I plan on building mini itx gaming/office rig (Dan case) next year and a low heat output xeon sounds like an ideal choice.
>>
>>57471289
ebay

There's certain sellers that specialise in this stuff. They're usually the same ones that are selling ES/QS chips.

xtrememicro

bloommax

These are two I am familiar with. xtrememicro was the one I got my used xeon from.

This 14 core E2683 v3 ive got has extremely low heat output. 26*C on the hottest core, ambient is 21*C. Ive never seen it over 50*C even with linpack on all cores. This is with an NHD15 heatsink and define R4 case though, both are solid for air cooling.
