Other Ubuntu flavours are pretty go-to, but Unity 7 looks like it's stuck in 2009. Unity 8's been in development for years, and it better have been worth the wait.
>>
>>57464016
I use it, but switch my DE.
>>
>>57464138
not even that it looks like it's from 2009. windows xp is older than 2009 and I'd rather use that gui than Unity. it's nothing to do with looks, Unity is just a dogshit desktop environment

it's just awful

nobody likes it either, that's not my opinion it's a fact
>>
>>57464016
Because I might prefer to setup things accorsing to my needs on Debian. Ubuntu is still practical for a quick install, and there's less bloat to remove than before and it just werks.
As for Unity, it was dogshit when it was released, and even if it's quite comfy nowadays the reputation it has won't change soon.
Currently running Debian testing on my desktop amd Ubuntu 16.10 on my laptop.

to use different package managers
to have access to different packages
to use a different init system

and that is a very very very shortened answer

Use any other distro.

Ubuntu limits how much you can rice your desktop which is unacceptable.

I'll reach for Arch in the following scenario:
* I have a little server (running on an ODROID C2 or something) that doesn't need anything other than the bare essentials and whatever its mission is
* the target machine is some architecture that Ubuntu doesn't really target
* I don't want to bother going through regimented upgrade plans or re-installations when a new version comes out (i.e. rolling release kind of fits)

For my desktop and laptop-- yeah I use Ubuntu.

I don't know why I thought switching to linux was a good idea.
>>
>>57464016
Because that one has a retarded package manager and insane defaults.
>>
>>57467391
>Arch performs significantly worse on my T420 than Debian. Fan runs louder and the graphics are sluggish
How does this have anything to do with the distro itself? Blame the kernel for that. Well, Debian is ridden with patches, and it makes the matter even worse, because you don't know anymore if upstream has fixed the bugs. At least, with Arch, there's no ambiguity: bugs are either from vanilla software or lack of configuration.
>>
>>57464016
Because Solus exist and deprecates all those ancient distros

People bandy this term about quite a lot without ever elaborating on it. Anybody care to?

I agree with apt being retarded, but in practical terms it only shits the bed once or twice a year for me. I can deal.

At the time I tried Ubuntu 16.04.1, KDE was broken, and 14.04.something was getting stale.
Am comfortable on openSUSE Tumbleweed now.
>>
>>57469567
Then why aren't you using Ubuntu?
>>
>>57464016
I like ubuntu, but Ubuntu lacks the AUR. So next time I am going to use Antegros, Manjaro or something. I have installed Arch before and it's a pain in the ass to install, the arch wiki is useless. 99.9% of all the problems you might meet when installing is not covered by the wiki.
>>
>>57464016

DESKTOP THREADS DO NOT COUNT AS TECHNOLOGY. GO BACK TO /V/
>>
>>57471888

Desktop threads literally have more to do with reddit than most of the threads here since most of those people also browse r/unixporn, and I'm not making that up.

Because when NEETs are faced with something that actually works which in turn gives them free time, they get anxious and stop functioning. They need to be fixing their distro 24/7 because that's the only way they can feel productive.

Something I realized the other night and why I love Ubuntu on my laptop now. Is when I use it on my TV my settings are saved to only display to the TV as well as closing the lid doesn't affect the graphics driver.

On windows even when I have close lid to do nothing closing he lid crashes any playing videos or sometimes crashes games/affects fps.
