I do have a esp8266, I only got it since my dad bought 5 and asked if I wanted one so it's still laying in like the anti-static bag it came in.

I've got a few. They work fine for me. Although, I can't really use it attached to USB, because it pulls too much power turning on wifi, so it power cycles. I've got to put my code on, detach it from my laptop, attach it to USB charger.
Make sure you use the right baud rate of you can't connect over serial. >>57453612
