Usually blind people use canes with limited ability and it could not help them to detect dangers from all levels of obstacles. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to build a wearable navigation system that will be able to guide a visually impaired person safely and have the same ease and confidence as a sighted people in an indoor and outdoor environment.
The developed model consists in sensing the surrounding environment and provide real-time detecting via sonar sensors, and it aims to guide the blind person and prevent them from unwanted collisions with the obstacles through pre-recorded voice commands and vibro-tactile feedback. The model consists of two systems vest-hat and shoe unit. Both are integrated together, working as a single unit.
We propose a solution to cover the whole body in the same time, as well we can detect head level obstacles, High level obstacles (tables), stair-cases (upward stairs and downward stairs), holes and any other obstacles in front or on the sides of the user within a range of four meters and gives a suitable respect message empowering blind to move twice his normal speed because she/he feels safe.
The system is linked also with a GPS-GSM module to pin-point the location of the blind person and send it to a specific number whenever he feels lost. All of these measures altogether alleviate the risk of injury to the blind person.
One of the project innovative ideas was its creativity through the simplicity of design and the aesthetic features of the shoes, the jacket and the hat which the user can wear comfortably and help covering the whole body. Another creative feature was the system alerting feedback represented by 2 types of alerts: voice assistance and vibration assistance for those who have less hearing capacity. Finally an important feature was integrated to help locating the blind person using a GPS/GSM module that have increased the value of our system.
