wait, I don't get it, why do you think it's bad to utilize a basic and convenient function of the dekstop? I don't understand. can you please explain it to me?
>>
>>57438593
Because it's not convinient.
It's lazy and slower in the long run.
It's faster to either use the search function, pin shit to the start menu or pin shit to the taskbar rather than having to minimize one or more windows to look at the screen, scan the screen for the icon you need and then click it.

Files you want to save are better off saved with a solid folder hierarchy.
Temporary files are usually stuff downloaded from the internet, so they end in downloads and you can then remove them from them.
Most used programs are better on the taskbar to use win+number to launch it.

Icons typically look like shit, and add to clutter to your desktop. Like >>57438666 said, they don't have a whole lot of purpose that isn't filled by the taskbar, or using the search.

How many of the icons on your desktop do you regularly click on (daily at least). Be honest. It's probably a lot less than you think. Then when you are looking for a program that you don't use often you end up searching for it on your desktop (since you know it's there, but you don't use it often enough to have a specific muscle memory for it).

I find it a lot more convenient to roll without icons, and instead use a relatively static dock, with about 5 commonly accessed programs on it.

Everything that isn't in that list I just launch from Winkey+search+enter since I know instantly if what I'm looking for is in my dock or not.

I moved away from desktop icons about a month ago and I've been really happy ever since.

>It's faster to either use the search function
click + click + typing + click is objectively slower than double click, retard.

>minimize one or more windows to look at the screen
click + click + typing + click is objectively slower than click + double click

>Files you want to save are better off saved with a solid folder hierarchy.
why? explain. burying files you access often is, better somehow? because autism?

>Most used programs are better on the taskbar to use win+number to launch it.
one click is objectively faster than two button presses. all of my most used programs are already on my taskbar.

>>57438751
>Icons typically look like shit, and add to clutter to your desktop.
what? the desktop is for icons. what do you mean "clutter" it? "buttons are SHIT they clutter your keyboard lmfao!!1!" same logic.

>How many of the icons on your desktop do you regularly click on (daily at least).
probably one of them about once a day. that's why they're on my desktop and not my taskbar, keep them out of the way of things I use daily.

>Everything that isn't in that list I just launch from Winkey+search+enter
objectively slower than double click

neither of you answered my question, you just offered more tedious alternatives and gave a weird opinion that not using something how it's supposed to be used "looks better", I'll ask again:

why do you think it's bad to utilize a basic and convenient function of the dekstop?
>>
>>57438892
>click + click + typing + click
win + type + enter is objectively much faster than everything you posted, because it's faster than having to move your hand to the mouse and then move the mouse and then click shit, retard.
Not my fault if you don't know keyboard shortcuts.

Also minimizing more than one fullscreen windows is more than a single click (unless you use win+d but we've already assessed that you're a retard that doesn't know keyboard shortcuts).

>why? explain. burying files you access often is, better somehow? because autism?
Because imortant documents like insurance papers, work documents, other stuff, even pictures (note I said "documents you want to save", not most used documents, so learn to read) which needs to be saved and not used for a while are easier to find with a solid folder structure like
documents/importants/car insurance/2016

documents/important/taxes/2015

pictures/2016/2016_08_12_Croatia

>one click is objectively faster than two button presses. all of my most used programs are already on my taskbar
Moving your hand away from the mouse, moving the mouse over the icon and clicking is objectively solwer than muscle memory for win+number (also it counts as single press because you press them together)

>neither of you answered my question, you just offered more tedious alternatives and gave a weird opinion that not using something how it's supposed to be used "looks better"
We both answered fully. It just looks like you're retarded beyond redemption and it was no use.
If you just tried you'd see how slow and cumbersome your workflow is.
I don't even do it for the aesthetic, I just have no need for deskto icons having better faster options.

Dumb weeb.
>>
>>57439043
>Moving your hand away from the mouse

But really, you keep ignoring the time to move the mouse around, and that's why you can't see how keyboard shortcuts >>> mouse clicking.

With UAC turned off, every program is executed as an administrator. Sure, Common Senseâ„¢ 2017 will generally prevent you from having problems with this, but you don't run everything from a root shell for a reason. You're significant decreasing your system's security because the one or two programs that request elevated permissions each day are a minor annoyance.

>move your hand to the mouse
why is your hand on the keyboard? the only times my hands are on the keyboard are when I'm typing. when I'm trying to open something, I'm not typing. the mouse was literally invented to speed up computer navigation. if "moving your hands" is a problem, your suggestions even become more tedious because I'd have to move my hand from my mouse to the keyboard.

I seriously doubt your hand isn't on your mouse when navigating your computer. you're talking out of your ass because you're buttmad because you got proven wrong.

>(note I said "documents you want to save", not most used documents, so learn to read)
so you're just bringing up something irrelevant, then? I don't have anything like insurance documents on my desktop. even if I did, there's literally nothing wrong with keeping important files on your desktop unless you let other people use your computer.

be aware now every time you move your hand away from the mouse to navigate your computer. be aware of how fucking wrong you are.

the mouse is literally an efficiency-centered invention.

>what? the desktop is for icons. what do you mean "clutter" it? "buttons are SHIT they clutter your keyboard lmfao!!1!" same logic.

Not an argument friendo.

Just because the desktop is FOR icons doesn't mean icons are good.

Also, I'd love to see your objective study on launching stuff with win+typing the first 2-4 characters and+enter being faster than scanning your desktop for some item.

My biggest gripe with desktop icons, and this may not be the case for you, but I find it general is the case for most people; the desktop is constantly in some sort of flux state, operating halfway between a poorly managed folder of knickknacks, scattered with the occasional important document + a launcher for shortcuts.

Even on your desktop (assuming you were >>57438483) I can see two text documents, shortcuts to 5 games, shortcut to some music software, and then 3 folders with god knows what in them.

>Not an argument friendo.
actually it literally is an argument.

>the desktop is constantly in some sort of flux state, operating halfway between a poorly managed folder of knickknacks, scattered with the occasional important document + a launcher for shortcuts.
you are correct that this is a common state of people's desktops. however, I happen to be autistic about mine and what's on there is there for a reason.

>and then 3 folders with god knows what in them.
I know what's in them. I keep my .wavs in close access because I use them a lot, and FL studio has a poor file access system and it's fastest to go to desktop and a folder there to access sound information. I keep my aurora4x folder on the desktop because the game was designed lazily for the designer's personal use and I can't operate it from any kind of shortcut. I am constantly accessing dwarf fortress ini files to modify them when generating maps, as well as updating the game and it makes it easy to just trash the old folder when I download a new version of the game if it's on my desktop. the text files contain lists of dwarves to be assigned to military positions as well as information pertaining to them, kept where I can access them easily if I need the information.

it's incredible how triggered you guys are about someone using a desktop the way it's supposed to be used. it's a digital terminal.

I've never understood the appeal behind the whole "do you need a jacket" widget.

Is it really that hard to look out the window while you're getting ready? If you're going outside anyways it's not like it's an extra step or anything. And if you're not going outside then it doesn't even matter.

No it isn't you mong. The discussion isn't about whether the desktop is FOR icons or not, it's a discussion about whether or not using desktop icons is efficient/useful. Making the statement that the desktop is FOR icons is an absolutely moot point.

We can all agree that the desktop is FOR icons, but that doesn't inherently make it the best way to do things.

Essentially what you're saying is that just because something was made to be a tool for a specific task, that it must be the best thing to do that task. That isn't a given in any situation, a tool made to do a specific thing can still be a shitty tool. Why don't you just launch everything out of metro, since it was made SPECIFICALLY to launch stuff, it must be superior, right?

The desktop is a great simple tool for your average computer user, and it can function as a great temporary workspace. But launching stuff directly off it just seems bizarre when there are so many better options.

I'm not trying to be contrarian, or hipster/g/ incarnate with this shit either, up until just recently I was all about desktop icons. My challenge to you: try going iconless for a week or two and I guarantee you will start liking it more. If you don't, it's not like you're gonna lose anything, you can just put the icons right back if you really hate it.
>>

Taken out of context? yes. in context? no. I was demonstrating the lack of logic in calling something "clutter" when it's in an intended location with an intended use.

it is the same to consider desktop icons "clutter" as it is to consider buttons on a keyboard "clutter". are the desktop icons in the way, somehow?

should I replace my keyboard with some fanciful artwork? I can use a digital keyboard and a mouse in place of typing.
>icon-less desktop logic

taking what I said out of context to try and make it appear as though I'm wrong is how we define the strawman fallacy.

furthermore, suggesting I "ought" to not use desktop icons is also an example of the is/ought fallacy, along with any "ought" in existence. go back to phil 101 before you start trying to apply logic to your arguments.

Holy shit dude, we're not the ones butthurt that your desktop looks like literal shit. We just gave you some advice and tried to back it up with our own experiences of why icons aren't needed/aren't good.

Then you flip out and start crying that "ITS THE INTENDED USE OF A COMPUTER YOU PLEBS" and start drawing parallels between an digital interface and a mechanical interface (seriously wtf is that shit, don't pretend like this analogy makes even an ounce of sense).

Sorry /g/ didn't like your shit tier desktop, go cry to your mom about it. No one here cares.

You just keep spouting the same shit post after post
>BUT THAT'S WHAT THE DESKTOP IS FOOOOOOR
>BUT IT'S FASTER
>BUT A KEYBOARD HAS CLUTTER

Literally all of these things have been addressed and you're just ignoring the good points being brought up against them. Then you turn around and cry about how no one gets you and that you have the superior taste.

You desktop looks like shit, it works like shit, and you have a shit taste. Deal with it, faggot.
