Daily reminder you have ZERO (0) reason to use Arch or Gentoo instead of Ubuntu or Debian
Rolling release
Daily reminder you have ZERO (0) reason to use any version of linux instead of Windows 10 pro
>>57420668
Debian and Ubuntu can be used with a rolling release, AUR, and Pacman
Installing Gentoo gives you tonnes of autism points that you can cash out on /g/. Although there's literally no reason to install Arch.
>>57420647
At this point I'm convinced that it's just one dedicated autist behind the anti-Arch posting.

Arch and gentoo make nice hobby distros. If you're going hobby distro though LFS is way better though.

Heh?
Gentoo and Debian are very different distros.
>>57420668
why would I want that?
serious question. 99% of the time I don't care about whatever the very latest up-to-the-minute version is. If I have security support, I'm fine. There's two or three things I do want the recent version of, that's what backports are for.
t. Debian Stable
>>57420804
BSD is alright but incorporating all the pleasant little personal/hobby softwares written for linux is relatively trivial on LFS when you get a package manager running.
>>57420868
i'm not that anon, but i like rolling release distros so that when the security support runs out, i don't have to re-install the OS to a newer version.
t. openSUSE Tumbleweed
>>57420647
You didn't include Solus on the latter of that list.

Why not just get Pro and use tweaking software to remove the telemetry?

I can go on.

Portage is just amazing, you'll have to experience it to understand
>Arch
AUR and rolling release.
If anything I'd use Calculate or Antergos, but never Debian or Ubuntu.
>>57422564
go on
>>57420647
Well, arch is jut a diy, there theoretically should not be a reason to install arch except your own curiosity. You can use an installer if you're interested into pacman or the arch policies.
>>57422590
What makes portage better than apt?
also will i need to read like 300 pages if i want to install calculate or does it have an installer?
I'm using Antix (debian jessie without systemd) here, fluxbox as a wm, two tabs open in palemoon and only 333mb of memory in use. feelsgoodman
>>57422675
It has an installer
I like portage because it can add overlays without needing to update the repos, and I can install whatever package version I want without switching between "sid" or "testing" or whatever kind of bullshit Debian has.
If I wanted to install python3.5 on Debian oldstable, I'd have to switch to Debian testing which means ALL of my packages are now set to Debian testing. In gentoo no such bullshit exists, it's all one big repository with every single package version
Calculate Linux has a GUI installer, yeah.
>>57422720
To add onto what this guy said. Portage USE flags are also pretty nice to use as well. They end up solving a lot of problems that you might have on other distros. e.g. if Vim clipboard copying isn't working, it's because the developers didn't compile it to have that. So you can just add the relevant +clipboard USE flag
Chromium doesn't include widevine on this distro? On gentoo you just use the widevine flag.
Daily reminder that Ubuntu is Debian-based. Install Debian.

>>57422739
maybe i'll give it a go, then
thanks
I think it's easier to build Arch into what I want to use instead of ripping everything out of ubuntu/debian and changing the package management to use Arch's repos
