Whether Excel should or shouldn't be used in any given instance is a different question - but it's hard to deny that Excel is a powerful piece of software used in many industries for a wide variety of tasks.

Virtually every small mom-and-pop business I've worked for has literally all of their business logic written in Excel. They use Excel to calculate taxes, employee payments, etc. It's incredible how versatile it is, but I guess it makes sense when you realize that Excel isn't just a spreadsheet. It's an easy to understand GUI and programming language for manipulating complex datasets. Libreoffice calc/etc. don't seem to "get" that, and they just make a regular spreadsheet as a competitor.
