So I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'm deciding between either the Razer Blade Stealth or the Dell XPS 13
Primarily gonna be using it for basic stuff like writing etc
Wil definitely do some video editing but that won't involve anything intense like 3D rendering or 4K
Don't play games much

Which one should I go for and why?
>>
They're pretty damn similar, but the XPS will give you far longer battery life.
>>
yeah i'm leaning towards the xps
do you know if it has upgradeable ram or is it soldered?
>>
>>57411465

>>
>>57411465
Soldered RAM.

hmm maybe i should get an XPS 15 instead of 13
it costs £100 more but it has upgradeable RAM and more storage space and that larger screen...
only downside seems to be that it doesnt have the kaby lake processors yet
>>
XPS simply on the fact it doesn't make you look like a virgin.
>>
>>57411843
i wonder if it's worth the extra £50 for the i7

does anyone know if the Kaby Lake processors really are that much better for video stuff than the previous 6th gen ones?
>>
>>57411266
>won't involve anything intense
>don't play games much
So what's the fucking hold up? Isn't the Dell like $500 cheaper? It's the obvious choice.
>>
>>57411843
It'll be a while for Intel to churn out the quad core Kaby Lake. It also depends on what model you're getting. FHD + 512 GB SSD XPS 15 gets you 84wh battery and that will last you way longer than the 4k screen.
>>
>>57411940
yeah i definitely won't be getting the 4k model

how old are the current xps15 models? weren't they released around a year ago now?
I'm kind of tempted right now because dell UK is doing a £100 off on all XPS laptops until 15th Nov
>>
>>57411843
Ignore Kaby Lake and focus on the form factor. on top of that, I think upgradable RAM would have a bigger impact than the small difference between those two chips.
>>

>>
>>57411960
It was released sometime at the end of 2015. kaby lake doesn't bring as much improvements to Skylake compared to when Skylake improved on Broadwell.

Is Dell UK selling it online or do they have a physical store? Dell usually assembles a unit when there's an online order then ships. Delays have been increasing but I think they're mostly complaints from the US.
>>
>>57411266
I don't know how long the razor will actually last in the real world. Their products always seem to have longevity issues.
>>
>>57412062
I have the same worries. I'm actually quite impressed with what they've done but I just can't shake the past associations. I'd rather wait another generation or so and see how they fare for people.

I'd buy a skin to cover the back so fucking fast, though.
>>
Razer blade is a child's toy and the XPS13 is inferior in many ways to the MBP.
>>
I'm having a similar choice between Razer Blade 1060 and XPS 15, want a laptop for both devving and games. Both are sexy, both seem great but also troubled with QC issues, one has better GPU, another has bigger screen... So it's one tough choice.

Any opinions on which one's better? Mostly doing CPU-heavy dev work but would also like it to be able to handle games more or less.
>>
>>57412037
It's all online for me
I've read that Skylake was indeed a considerably bigger upgrade than Kaby Lake is, though it does bring better video (esp 4k) rendering, which might be useful for my video editing work...
>>57412062
yeah i'd say im not considering the razer anymore, the choice is xps13 vs xps15 for me now
>>57412115
I've been using an MBP for the past 6 years but the new lineup is ridiculously shit and overpriced, so I'm switching

Only difference is that Kaby Lake can hardware decode 4K HEVC 10-bit, which Sky Lake cannot.
>>
>>57412479
That looks like absolute chink trash
>>
>>57412617

agreed, the xps 13 looks like a sexy new car

I just bought a 2016 xps 13. I5, 8gb, 256 ssd for 665. Used obviously but still in new condition. How'd I do?

also im more interested in capacity than speed
>>
>>57414121
Screen size isn't the defining attribute of an ultrabook, although it's kind of a buzzword.

I've got the XPS 13 with i7 and 256G SSD. It's usually dead silent and super snappy, having to listen to HDD clicks or spinning up of a slow 5400 rpm would ruin the impression.
>>
I really love the XPS 13, I got to use one in person and it's a great laptop. However, I really do like the plug-n-play ability the Razer Core Stealth has with the Razer Core in case I want to gayme. I use my computers for my job, and I find myself constantly struggling with having things on my laptop that I worked on while at work/traveling and then stuff I left on my desktop at home. So I really want something to just replace my desktop, which makes the razer core seem very attractive. Having a network drive or cloud storage isn't a viable option to circumvent this as I can be out somewhere with no real internet access sometimes.

I am not sure if I should just wait until more external GPU enclosures come out that are more compatible with other laptops.
>>
>>57413731
That's because only a poorfag would think it's OK to order a laptop with an i7 and a spinning rust drive.
>>
OP,

Before you shell out a bunch of money for a Kaby Lake laptop definitely check eBay for Skylake models from a reputable seller. There like half the price or more of Dell's website with 4k screen, max ram, max ssd space, etc under warranty still. It just depends if you mind compromising for the 6th Gen CPU. The outside build is exactly the same.

What about the Dell Precision 5510?
>>
>>57414798
I had one for 18 months and then right as the warranty ended the HD6990M GPU died. It was ~$750 for a replacement off ebay so I sold it for $800 and bought a desktop instead since it was huge as fuck anyway and the battery only lasted 70-120 minutes
>>
>>57414933
the highest end configurations of that are otherworldly, if you can afford it of course
>>
>>57415918
is it possible to upgrade it myself, or only when buying online from dell?

Check out the Origin Evo line, their QC is top notch from my friends' ownership. I'm planning long term to get one since they're $2k but hey I'm getting a full 1060 16GB of RAM and a decent quad core for a laptop I'll be using for a long while. Plus their logo doesn't SCREAM GAYMURR
>>
>>57416123
Anyone?
Does anyone know if the components are user-upgradeable?
