OP just go to codecademy and play with the various courses then once you get a better understanding you'll be able to pave your own path. Don't fall for /g/ memes. This board is mostly for people who are all talk no walk. That's why there's more discussion on setting up work environment(distros argument) than showcasing their actual programming projects.

I was going to give a somewhat long answer but this is pretty much it.
I'd only suggest that you do install linux or FreeBSD, if you want to do it ina virtualbox or an unused laptop at first, go ahead.
And second: most languages are similar, so don't marry your first language.
Don't either fall for language zaelotry either, pick the language that best suits your taste.
Also keep an open mind, and stay away from /g/
