ITT see subject field and OP is a faggot.

I'm having a hard time finding a Linux environment to settle down with. Basically, most of them suck in different ways. Nothing is coming together as a good whole. I'll give you a rundown on what I think of the main ones. I'm focusing on both desktop and laptop use.

>Gnome 3
Definition of bloat and adding abstraction to what should be kept simple. Focusing development towards tablets? Frequent breakage. I don't like it for either of my purposes.
>KDE
The other big popular one. Seems better than above now, but is polarizing and even more "bloated". I don't like it's look. It doesn't seem to get out of my way and let me work normally. Can anyone tell me how to make it look good?
>Unity
>>>Oobontoo and Canonjew
Memes aside it looks like it has improved a lot. Again, it doesn't "get out of the way" and let me just do my work. It defines the entire experience of using vanilla Ubuntu for me. I'm in the group that is massively turned off by its look and taskbars.
>Cinnamon
Best alternative for me. Just works. Biggest problem would be the way it does workspaces now. I had it break once so I know where the consistency people are coming from. I'm iffy about how the mint team is forking and patching a bunch of "Xapps" with it.
>MATE
It's still a Gnome continuation. Their philosophy in itself is destructive, see what happened to Gnome 3. It does get out of the way and look nice with just a little bit of effort at least. Longtime mate user experiences?
>XFCE
I like it. Simple and customizable. Seems like the best option when you want to play around with different file managers and so on. This being said I'm shit at ricing it as well. Guides on customizing it would be appreciated.
>LXDE, LXQT and so on
K DEs, I think there is a market for them. I don't work on ancient hardware tho. And at that point WMs get even more attractive.
>New hipster DEs
Teach me about them pls

Reaching post limit, will discuss WMs if thread gets interest.

That's what I am thinking of doing. Looking for functionality and justworks™. With a good enough customized set up I don't think I would have to go back.
Looking for a dynamic window manager that is functional (easy to move around and edit windows, quick access to all my files and programs). I like tiling, but float exists because it's useful. Especially on a 1366 res laptop. I regret that purchase every day.
I'd also like the option to have gaps, because sometimes go full faggot.
>>57398387
>>57398459
This is old, but see pic related. The first few patches of gtk+3 were full of disasters. Their devs seem anti-loonix. I'm not a full freetard, but I think programs should be designed to do simple tasks and do them well. Gnome 3 IS too big. Alexander Viro has a good quote on the Gnome people.
>>57398437
All alternative OS are starting to look more inviting. Installing Pantheon is a pain in the ass and I don't trust the ElementOS crewd. How is the software landscape on BSD looking this day? Quick analysis feels barren. I might be a retard living under a rock.

Do. Not. Do. That.

I strongly encourage you to contribute to KDE and fix what you think needs fixing. They are awesomely open compared to how it was in KDE 4 days. Small tweaks I've noticed already done since 5.0
>better font rendering
>less fuckhueg calendar
>cashew finally removable
>more complete icon set
>many tweaks to taskbar
>tray icons finally don't scale to gigantic proportions with taskbar but have capped max size FUCKING FINALLY
>flattening menu finally actually flattens it to one level

Things that need polishing
>stop dolphin littering .desktop files ffs
>faster thumbnail re-read
>better live thumbnail scaling
>tray media player control has to start instantly

those are only grievances off the top of my head and I personally am determined to fix that .desktop file crap and implement some kind of hashtable instead.

everyone should contribte to KDE because it has most potential & flexibility and because it already serves as intermediate step for many projects like LxQT
>>
>>57398354
I quite like budgie, and it doesn't require systemdicks (unlike unity and gnome, the latter which, with a few patches, no longer does). Despite using vala, the head dev has had enough of it and is going to rewrite the vala code to C.

Yes, that piece of shit exactly. I'm thinking simply creating
{path:flag}
hashtable where flag is just normal integer and stash that in ~/.config. then use some linear time search function to go through it every time any folder is opened in dolphin. for starters.

DE is a package of software of which the taskbar, panel, and window manager are a part. You can have a DE without its default window manager. You do not need a DE but you need at least a window manager. A window manager is responsible for making sure that programs can have their own windows. You could not compute without it.

all des are shit, as are most wms, the only way to salvage ganoo/loonix on the desktop is to find a configurable tiling wm and accept that it's going to be a bitch to swap to because all other forms of desktop management have trained you in bad habits

not that I can take my own advice, I'm still clinging to the broken bloated buggy mess that is kde that consistently finds new ways to make me shake my head at the sheer and utter brokenness of it
>>

Used the term bloat wrong earlier (Gnome 3 is still bloated fucktards fight me) but that's basically what I meant. UI cancer. The very presence of the Gnome 3 interface becomes a part of your browsing experience whether watching videos, browsing on the internet or basically doing whatever. It never gets out of your way. And that's particularly grating when you don't even agree with the design choices its creators made.
Also what is this gestapo gulag shit going on? Tons of "inflammatory" posts getting deleted. The new mods are simply ebig.
>>
>>57398354
>bloat

You don't even have to use a DE. You can use a window manager like Fluxbox or Openbox by itself. This is infinitely less resource intensive, and still practically functional.
>>
I just use openbox I don't even do that much with my PC and I don't see a reason to use a DE

Does anyone know of any icon themes for Linux that have that 8-bit or pixelated look of early PC graphics?

Preferably something original, but I guess a re-packaging of old icons for Linux would also be cool.

Note: The "look" is the key term here. Obviously the whole "flat" look of modern graphics could easily be done in 8bits, but that's not what I'm talking about.
