part of it is the 80/20 rule (in this case, something along the line that taking something from 80% to 100% (in comfort / noise canceling efficacy / anything) often accounts for 80% of the cost). unless the OP is at bose doing R&D or something (as opposed to a bose store employee), the chances of him having any particular insight on this is basically zero.
