mook's doing a pretty good job of weeding out the tech-illiterates, actually. If you know how to use an adblocker on phone, you're alright. The Clover app not being on the Play Store, but on F-Droid also helps a bit.

Possible, but battery-draining (through ABP or newer tools like DNS66). Those also don't work on mobile networks AFAIK.
I'm rooted myself, and I use a hosts-based ad blocking solution, but think of that minority crowd on /g/ - they don't want to sacrifice the little battery life they've got, even if it comes at the price of looking at ads. Or they can't root because of reasons (security, warranty, unrootable phones, etc.)
