Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

how's the default wifi card on T420?

Looks comfy

Thinking about doing that myself, do all the extra keys not work or only some of them?

Also how different is this older keyboard still to the x230 one in terms of feel?
>>

but do you have a working caps lock light?

can someone recommend me a quiet thinkpad?
i have an x60 and a t61 right now and they're both so loud that i'm afraid to bring them to class

Nah, Thinkpads aren't picky. If it fits, it sits.
>>
Is an X220 worth the extra dosh over a T420 for increased portability, or does the smaller size/reduced weight not really make much of a difference?

I only need a laptop for making a couple of long trips a year.
>>
>>57374829
The price difference between the two shouldn't be substantial. If it is, you just haven't seen enough listings.
>>
>>57374860

I'm in Britbongistan. a T420 is £120 and a X220 is £140.
>>
>>57374506
T61 might need some lube on the fan, or a fan, which are cheap new off Ebay. I have five T61s and none are loud under load.

I've seen some of you fall for the convertible ones, what are your temps under load? I'm playing around with Yoga S1 and HW monitor shows up to 80C. 45 when idle, so the tool itself cannot be that far from truth.

~200kbps for me, people say meh but actually my german internet is about 0,5-1mbps on good days so i live with it
>>
is $200 for a libreboot x200 too much?
>>
>>57374950
Got one really cheap with all the other refurbs, few days ago actually. Put it up on local ebay equivalent, will see what bites. I'm under the impression normies love that shit. Meme it up with "milspec" buzzwords and there we go, 20% of pure profit.
At least in theory.
>>
>>57375114
Yeah cause you can add libreboot yourself
>>
>>57374829
Small is nice since most people use a laptop as a desktop at home. BTW Thinkpad docks are cheap and an underrated accessory. I'd get the X220 then connect it to a nice external monitor at home. Notebook screens, all of them, are shite compared to a nice large monitor.
>>
>>57374972
SSDs are always wonderful and make a great difference because old spinner notebook drives eat ass and not in a good way. Ultrabases are cheap and worth a look for when you use a notebook as desktop.
>>
is there any way to specifically tell when my T420 was made? i know that the sticker on the bottom gives the month and year, but is there a way to get a day?
>>
>>57374972
Just get something on sale with enough space you need. Really any of them will be better than a mechanical drive and you wont be able to tell the difference between SSD's except in benchmarks. I went from a SATA II SSD that completely saturated the SATA II speeds to a SATA III drive that was twice as fast and the only thing I noticed was battlefield 3 maps loaded slightly faster but even on the old drive they completely loaded the map before the countdown timer finished.

Of course there are some you should avoid I think the Kingston V300 had some issues just look it up before buying

you can get this 500GB one for 115 on newegg with this code ESCFFEH36
I don't know if its good though.

Guys I just got a T420 and I can boot to BIOS no problem.

However the Security section of the BIOS says the "Hardware password manager" and "Password at unattended boot" are enabled

Is this normal or something to worry about?

also anything else I should troubleshoot to make sure I wont have problems in the future?

>>
>>57376340
no. I swapped out only the panel without problems
>>
>>57376370

X60 or 14-inch T60 shouldn't be more than $75. SXGA+ X60T or SXGA+/UXGA 15-inch T60 could be up to $150 depending on specs and condition. Anything beyond that and you're getting completely ripped off.
>>
>>57376370
depends on specs, but maybe <$120
>>
>>57376370
On a related note I'm picking up an X60 soon. Mostly planning to use it for school (writing reports, internet, programming).

I'm getting it for $120, which seems like a pretty good deal. Still have to check it out to make sure it's good, but the guy doesn't mention anything particularly bad.
>>
>>57376421
(Same person) The guy also says it has 4GB ram and 160GB HDD, which is above specs from what I can see. So I can justify the slightly higher price.

My company ordered ~120 e550s from for a contract in Korea. They were purchased from over there. Anyway the contract got cancelled and they're getting shipped back here (U.S.) I think I'd be able to get one at a discount since we're primarily a Dell shop, and we have no idea what to do with them. You think they'll have little Korean letters on the keys?

You should be able to just swap out the keyboard no problem
You can also probably sell the keyboard for a decent price in the US since I doubt very many people sell them over here.

I disagree actually, I think the XX20 series Thinkpads are very classy. The keyboard is downright gorgeous and reminds me of the design style of Ducky PBT boards. There are certainly Adobe tacky elements about them like the function key though.

The >XX40 series would be perfect in terms of design if only they had the old non-island keyboard.

man i'm so bummed, I'd appreciate any help. i got an x220 tablet a couple months ago, upgraded the RAM and stuck an SSD in there. It had an i7, handled all my work like a champ, played my old vidya and chinese cartoons, i could even doodle on it. Comfiest piece of technology i've ever owned, I was supremely happy to have fallen for the meme.
Sometimes it would randomly shut down, but it was alright because I'd be back up and running again in seconds.
Last night I noticed that I actually caused the shut downs when I pressed down firmly on the keyboard or trackclit. I tested it out, the machine would sperg out then shut off. I turned it back on one last time, closed the lid, and went to sleep.
This morning I couldn't get it to boot. No lights, beeps, nothing. I did all the usual troubleshooting, removing ram and battery, holding power button, removing cmos battery, still nothing. All I can get it to do is flash the battery and sleep status lights once when I plug it in to power.
I've disassembled it, reapplied thermal paste, cleaned it up, and put it back together. Still nothing.
I don't have the cash for a new motherboard, and the cheapest replacement machine is double what I originally paid for mine.
I'm thinking that this is something I'll have to investigate in my free time, so I was tracking down schematics to see if I could determine what exactly went wrong and maybe cheaply fix it with equipment at uni. All I can find are X220 schematics, and I'm not sure I can use it. Frankly I'm out of my element here but I'm patient enough to learn.
Anyone know where I could find X220t schematics, or maybe other options I can try to get this thing to boot up? Sorry for the wall of text.

Anyone know of a thinkpad, elitebook, or latitude with a core m3 and a trackpoint? My T2020 (pic related) is really starting to show its age. The SU9300 is still fast enough for what I use it for but it runs pretty warm and since the fan bearings are shot and modern atoms outperform this junk, I think it's time to upgrade.

Clit-mouse is a must.

I prefer ~12", I don't care for touch, and none of that 1366x768 trash.

I'm going to order a new fan for my laptop but after that, I don't want to put any more parts into it.

Give W series some love too.
However they are mobile workstations, not really laptops. Ei. they are heavy and bulky but give you good performance.
Gotta be honest that I don't have a Thinkpad W, I gave an Elitebook 8560W which is supposedly the equivalent. I love the machine but it is too big and heavy to carry around on a daily basis. Got my X220 for that. My 8560W blows the X220 out of the water in terms of performance (i7 2630QM (afair, it's in my lab, not here with me right now so can't check specs) vs. i5 2520M and better GPU as well) but loses big time in terms of portability and battery life. Different tools for different jobs.

It's only a computer, and external keyboard, monitor and mouse will always be superior to anything that fits in a notebook. Most people use their notebook as a desktop anyway, and for portability I'd rather have a cheap used Pad so I won't be sad if I break it. Battery tiers:
>FREE BATTERY IF ELIGIBLE - https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/hf004122

>New geunine lenovo - most expensive but more durable and dependable compared to the chinese counterparts. If money is no object, buy new.

>Used/refurbished genuine Lenovo - on a budget, these have all the benefits of new batteries, just with some wear. Only buy used batteries from sellers that will screencap battery stats (charged vs original design capacity, cycle count) so you know what you're getting. Usually price is on-par with high quality third party batteries.

>High quality 3rd party battery - anker & denaq both use jap/korean 18650 cells and are thus known to wear well. Worth considering at this price point. Some models (XX30 and up) will not charge 3rd party batteries, so avoid outright.

>New chinese batteries - reviews are mixed but most use sub-par cells and electronics. They may die unexpectedly or wear much faster than genuine lenovo batteries. Others seem to work fine. There are a million brands and batches out there, so there's no way to tell which is better than another, if they are.

>used chinese or unknown capacity used lenovo - reconsider your life choices that led you to this destitute position

laptop memory and ssds can get expensive on their own. you'd spend more if you bought a t420 with 4gb ram (2x2, probably) and a 120gb hdd cause you'd have to buy 2 4GB sticks and an ssd, plus then you'd have useless ram and a useless drive now

I have a T601F with a T9300 and an Advanced Dock with an R7 240, and in 99% of games I've tried, the bottleneck has always been the CPU. I get 6-7 hours out of the 9cell in my X201s. The non-slim model is probably within 30 minutes of that.

Found a used t430 on ebay that I like, but when I asked the seller if it had computrace or a bios password set he responded in broken english that it didn't. (I had to ask twice to even get this response). Should I run away, or order it?

Is this what I should get if I want to upgrade my X230 screen to IPS? Is it possible to upgrade to 1080p or does that require a bunch of fucking around?

Yeah you could also try the T9800 and T9900 but they have 35W TDP instead of 25W. I mentioned the P9700 because it seems to be the most balanced one in heat/performance.

Is it safe to set the PWM of the T520 FHD panel to 1200Hz?

Did any W520 come with a sub-1080p display? I've heard someone say that the W520 only shipped with the wide gamut B156HW01 panel.

So if I buy a W520 off ebay and the display resolution isn't listed could it be a lower resolution panel?

I think it should be fine, quoting thinkwiki these should be the ones:
>14.1 " WXGA + 1440x900 TFT (AUO, Samsung)
>14.1 " WXGA + 1440x900 TFT LED (LG-Philips, Samsung)
>>

Welp I bought the t440p for $200. It's an i5 but the memory is 2 different sticks and the hard drive is total shit, the guy must have swapped it out for an old shitty one. No big deal, turns out these processors are upgrade-able. You think it's worth it to pick up an i7 and 2 sticks of 8gb, or should I just dump this thing on ebay? I figure I'm only $200 in right now, I can't get hurt

You should go with the Alienware M14x screen, at least that's what everyone says.

Personally i went with this one, the N140FGE-LA2.
http://s.aliexpress.com/uMZbYBzy

Mostly because i didn't knew better at the time. Turned out to be okay, still shit viewing angles but at least the slightly blueness of the original screen disappeared.

Can't decide between X220 and T520 bros.

>T520: larger display, more upgradable
>X220: better display (can be upgraded to IPS, whereas the good display for the T520 is impossible to find these days), a bit cheaper, better battery life?

Pic related, the BatteryMon log while watching chink cartoons and for some reason stays at 6% for hours.

Running LXLE now, I haven't tried to see if I can video edit with Sony Vegas, but photoshop and League work well.

So are the P70s good or should I just get a high-end dell?
>>
>>57389098
I wouldn't risk it.

>>57390993
Yeah they are good, but you should define 'high end Dell' because I can say a high end dell is better with only one attribute
>XPS 15 100% adobe RGB
>>
>>57390993
I have a P70 and it's pretty decent, good for work, can run ML/statistics programs on pretty large datasets, can max out BF1 with the quadro 4000M

It's a beast though in terms of weight/dimensions so if you're unless you're someone like me who moves from city to city every 4-12 months and doesn't want to ship a desktop, I'd just get a desktop. I actually use a T430 as my "daily driver" just because it's so much more mobile. The P70 is just for serious computing/gaymen
