can you /g/uys post pictures of your Thinkpad T420? It is such an iconic piece of technology that i'm literally obsessed over.
Even though I already have a gaymen pc, I'll be buying the T420 refurbished on newegg just so I can upgrade it with ssd, battery, and ram.

pls show me your t420 all dolled up and linux ready

It is a shame that like all Lenovo laptops the screen is absolute garbage.

"just rape my eyes, Lenovo!"

Will Lenovo ever make a laptop with a backlight that doesn't at least tire the shit out of your eyes?

It all depends on distance between the base and mouse. This has the biggest impact on battery life.
Plus, early parties of this model had a problematic battery that was wearing too quickly.

If it breaks one day I'll get the same model...

This cpu is the best for the t420 imo, not so powerful to get throttled for a decent amount of time and tolerable heat albeit higher than the dualcores.

Agreed, I don't really have any heat problems unless I'm doing CPU heavy work like compiling or 3D model rendering. I do however have issues with power loss on battery using TLP if I don't limit the CPU performance a bit. Not sure what the cause is but I don't really mind, it saves battery anyways.

28nm variant of the dGPU (which is pretty rare, and has always 2GB of vRAM)
also good thermal compound.

Maybe you didn't notice but the dGPU is overclocked, as well as the vRAM. CPU has turbo and HT enabled, so I consider myself lucky ;^)

It's not bad, but it's still pretty shit quality panel, its better than 720p though.

I also think there are 1 or 2 panels you can buy online to replace the stock 900p panel, but the mod only works if your model has the 900p screen to begin with.

Sure?

But I don't get why this board loves the T420 model so much.

T420's dated hardware is now too slow for demanding software, and even normal productivity software like the office suite makes the fan spin up to let everyone know that you have a non-retina early 10's business grade portable computerâ„¢.

You could upgrade the CPU to a higher performance one pretty easily, but at the cost of turning it into a CPU throttling high-performance hair-dryer.

The screen is utter shit unless you have one of the four or so manufacturers of the IPS screens, making it practically a lottery to get a mediocre screen.

The keyboard flexes and keys are really close to each-other, I'll give it a solid 6/10 since I've also been through a replacement after some of keys stopped working a few years ago.

Exchangeable battery is a nice-to-have feature, which I haven't used once since I got it in 2011.
Got around 8 hours average on it with the higher-capacity ass size, making it also quite heavy for commuting to work/school.

>Thanks for reading my blog

I was like 8 years old, so I don't remember. It was fairly standard from what I can remember. Ir remember the screen bezel not being as big as the t420. I remember playing an arcade-y racing game that came with the laptop (since i doubt my dad would have been able to install anything on his own) And I remember it being a ThinkPad because of the nipple, it is imprinted in my memory.

The T60 isn't obsolete for that, never mind the T400 or T420. It's not like it takes some insane amount of power to run a text editor. Compile times might suck compared to newer processors, but if you're working on such a large-scale project that it really matters, you should have a dedicated build server anyway.
>>
>>57386121

>But I don't get why this board loves the T420 model so much.

Really inexpensive, very durable and well made, great linux support, wide variety available. Sandy Bridge processors provide very good performance.

>T420's dated hardware is now too slow for demanding software,

it's not. you are probably running the cheapest processor with an ancient HDD. literally 100% of /g/ you excluded have upgraded to an SSD. Makes a world of difference in these. Also the vast majority has Linux which makes them much faster.

>and even normal productivity software like the office suite makes the fan spin up to let everyone know that you have a non-retina early 10's business grade portable computerâ„¢.

Which only some frapp-drinking teen at starbucks would notice. Nobody here has bought a T420 new, we've all bought them for like $200 used. For that money you can't get better performance.

>You could upgrade the CPU to a higher performance one pretty easily, but at the cost of turning it into a CPU throttling high-performance hair-dryer.

Which is untrue. This is simply bullshit and you don't know what you're talking about.

>The screen is utter shit unless you have one of the four or so manufacturers of the IPS screens, making it practically a lottery to get a mediocre screen.

It's not great, we can all admit that. The 720p screen is trash but the 900p is good for productivity and the FHD IPS is good for everything else. We don't use these laptops for graphic work or watching a movie unless we are on the go.

That's good to know. I'm going through everything AIDA can show me and googling how to improve this beast. Biggest concern - new (9-cell?) battery. Intel's 3000 graphics should have to issue to power an external 1080p monitor. Then I'll be done. It'll be magnificent.

Sorry for the blog, but this machine is literally perfect. Currently typing on a Yoga 2 Pro I have from work, and aside from the 1080p screen and the weight, it's shit compared to the T420 for my daily tasks.

Ok so. Total noob here.
Why on earth are these T420 thinkpads so great?
I've been in the market for a decent laptop for a while, how do they hold up against more modern hardware?
What sort of modifications can it take?

It doesn't seem to be the most portable thing in the world from the looks of it. How heavy is it?

What's up with the top row of that keyboard?
The keyboard itself looks lovely to type on, and that's a rare compliment from me. I normally hate laptop keyboards.

What makes the t420 so great?

>>
>>57388505
The screen on the T420 really is. It is undeniably terrible. Viewing angles are so bad that the colors distort just between the top and bottom of the screen when looking at it head-on. There's a constant blue hue applied to everything, and a screen door effect on top of that. You can replace it with the screen from an Alienware M14x, which helps with colors and quality, but the viewing angles aren't helped any. Get a 1080p W520 or an X220 tablet if you want a half-decent screen.

If you get a non-tablet model, you'll have to look specifically for one an IPS screen. The TN screen isn't as bad as the T420's, but it's still mediocre and as long as you're constricting yourself to 1366x768, you might as well get viewing angles and colors worth a damn. All tablet models have IPS by default, so it's a safer bet in that regard, although it has a smaller battery than the regular X220.

>>
>>57388505

It's not that bad. It's not good but you can perfectly browse shit with it. You can't take it to bed because the viewing angles show. But if you use it like it's intended (it's a business laptop) then you will have a good time. Avoid 1366x768 screens, I have the 1600x900 on my thinkpad and for the money I don't think you can get any better. The X220s all have low res screens and I think it's more of a burden than viewing angles. If you want something slim there's the T420s, which is what I have. It's really compact but packs everything the normal T420 has, except for the battery. But those can be bought cheap on aliexpress and you can even have an ultrabay battery. Mine even has onboard 3G which means I have internet wherever I go, I fucking love it, it's the comfiest laptop I've ever had.

One word of warning, though: You will want to install Linux on it. Windows 7 is heavy and will cripple performance a lot. I have Arch Linux but if you feel like you don't want to tackle it, you can have Manjaro, for example. It offers technically the same efficient performance of Arch but with older packages and some bloat. I guess all the noob distros perform quite the same, you can even have something like Mint or Noobuntu on it. I run my thinkpads with XFCE because it's light but provides a decent environment. It's best with Arch because there are a lot of packages for it on AUR, which you can technically access with Manjaro.

Don't be afraid to embrace Linux if you are new to it, it will win you over. Youtube is a fine example where you will notice the extra performance with a T420. Mid tier models with the higher res panel can't play 1080p@60fps smoothly on windows but with linux it's no problem.
>>
how much would it run me to upgrade my t420i to glorious 1080p fhd?

currently 1600 x 900 res but 1080p would be so much fucking nicer for a res and poorfag like me ;-;
>>
>>57388855
Seems like it has a limited range of use. I assume you have a desktop as well.
Tell me if Im mistaken but couldn't you just use a desktop for vidya/work and a botnetbook for word processing and media browsing outside? Especially considering you can get a botnetbook ~$300 with fhd, ok vieweing angles and their battery life is more or less proven.

I've been using Linux forever brotha, Fedora or bust.

>>57388758
The screen resolution and screen size make that unappealing. I forgot that they were all 1366x768 until you said that.
>>
>>57389067
1366x768 is fine imo for the X220 12" screen however the 14" T420 has a 1600x900 option, if you have 1366x768 on it I'd upgrade that shit asap as first priority, but pair it with >>57388422 and it's a solid machine.
>>
>>57389067
I would suggest a W520 then. It's not that much bigger or heavier than the T420 and if you don't need the extra power of the dGPU you can just disable it in BIOS and work with just the iGPU. The 1080p panel is really good, while it is TN, it's one of the best TN panels ever made. Fantastic colors, excellent horizontal viewing angles, and even the vertical angles aren't as bad as you might expect.

>>57388901
Can't be done, the 1080p IPS mod only worked properly on the slim variant even when the custom board was available. Now nobody's even selling the board anymore, at least not to non-Chinese markets.

I had a T400 years ago. It died on me, I still don't know what exactly happened, one day turned it on and it just stopped working. Checked the ram, replaced it. Checked the HDD and it wasn't that either. Tried my backup battery, still nothing. I'm pretty sure the motherboard or something completely failed or something, because there was no bios, nothing on boot. I didn't really have a warranty or anything, and I didn't know enough about how to repair it so I inevitably just replaced it with a shitty Asus laptop, which worked much longer and better than the T400, still works today but I don't use it anymore, got myself an Acer E15 a few months ago and it's a great laptop for the price.

That said, I did like the aesthetics of the T400 for the ~2 years that it lasted me. Still pissed it failed though. Feel like I really got screwed.

Needs a compatible wifi card, your best shot is Atheros, some Broadcoms work too. All the kexts are available on insanely mac forums, you just drop them on the installation usb and then run a post-install script. Everything works as expected except the sd-card reader. Even all the dock ports.
Batt life is decent, on my fucked battery with about 70% of capacity I get 6+hrs idle and around 4-5hrs of work, depends on the workload, brightness and radio activity.

Nice, that's one of the ones I'm missing from 2010. Saved and filed.

I still have that collage actually. I'm just lacking a lot of the photos I took in 2010 (maybe even 2008-2009, I'm not even sure when I started posting battlestation photos).

Thanks though.

Yeah I can understand that. It slowly matches the rest the more you use it.
