How much of a performance increase should I see in games if I overclock my i5 6400 to around 4.3ghs using the bclk method? I have a 970 and only play at 1080p. Thanks

A BLCK OC will never be as stable as a multiplier OC or show the same type of gains, and you generally also have to fuck with your RAM timings and voltage as well since that's also getting a speed bump in the process. Why didn't you get a K CPU? I really can't recommend OC'ing it otherwise, it'll be too much of a hot stability headache for too little reward

Your 6400 will run just fine on BCLK. Difference between a 6400 BCLK to 4.3 and 6600k OC'd to 4.3 is the ability to use iGPU and higher ram timings.
For discreet gpu and gaming, these shouldn't affect you at all. With ANY decent cooler ($20+), your OC will perform just as same clock per clock.

2.7 -> 4.3 ghz is roughly 90% OC gain. Thats very stable @ 1.2v < 70C on benchmark loads.
So the reward is simply too much, when the pricing is concerned. i5-6400s go for $160s, mean while 6600k goes for $220s.
If you want to pay ~40% more for exactly same performance, go ahead.

Hold on to it for a while. Kaby Lake will work with your mobo, and Cannonlake might too. Get a K CPU then.

BCLK overclock is just as stable as multiplier overclock. It's just harder to do if more than 1 item depends on the BCLK.
Eg processor, memory, uncore, etc all use BCLK to determine their own clock which means that their settings would need to be adjusted.

Its pretty simple to BCLK with skylake.
>set cpu voltage to 1.2 +- 0.1 depending on your chip

>set ram to 2133 or close to it (if you want to go higher, experiment)
