There are alternatives to systemd, runit for example.
But systemd has taken over.
It will hardly change, it happened through the power of shekel and it will stay there through the power of shekel.
GNU/Linux was a mess anyway; the web is a mess.
There are great alternatives but there has to be a tradeoff between usability in the enterprise/desktop and actual good design. They are largely at odds, not inherently, but because of bad practices everywhere, and mostly because a shitload of Pajeetery all over, and also because a lot of shitty vendor policies such as closed source drivers.
