Hey /g/oys why did google and microsoft abandoned Java for the use of plugins?
All ive read is about security concerns, as if they gave a fuck for the user anyway.
Is it due to competition or something shadier?

Microsoft tried to compete with it using horribly insecure native code in the browser, called ActiveX. Then they tried to make that own java fork, violated their contracts pretty hard, and got sued for it. Then, since they couldn't control it, they abandoned it completely.
Oracle is flailing, so they are suing Google out of desperation for how it's using it on the client side, and better languages are now mature enough for use on the server side.

Because HTML5 with CSS is Turing complete and more secure. Because javascript has expanded its role. Because other things have filled in the gaps. Because Java was a massive pain in the ass that installed an ask toolbar.
