Used to be quite comfy with OS X (macOS now). Used at least a hundred hours if not more on hackintoshing and tweaking OS X. However at one point I left that shit and went to Linux. Good riddance.

My biggest gripes with the OS was the abysmal drivers that were absolute shit. The shit drivers had an impact on mpv and other applications so that was a big fuck you. No Vulkan is also a big fuck you. The fact that they locked the OS down even further by restricting root access is a fuck you (even though Clover pretty much disabled SIP automatically to begin with). How Finder was absolute crap. How HFS+ is disgusting. How the ricing was getting harder and harder (OS X is beautiful, but fuck me. Let me change some shit at least).

However the number one thing that finally did the switch was GPU passthrough. OS X did not have something similar to use effectively. While parallels worked fine for working with visual studio when needed, getting the full fucking experience in a VM including gaming was a godsend. I hate using Windows, but having this kind of power within the OS is ridiculous.

OS X was a great learning experience, not only hardware and software wise on how the ACPI tables work in DSDTs, how Intel CPUs handle speedsteps, how to hex edit their kexts and patch them on the go, how audio worked in terms of their AppleHDA kexts and more. The possibility of using proprietary software with the *nix terminal and software made it a great phasing OS going from Windows to Linux.

Haven't used Apple's desktop OS since OS 9. I'm not going to spend $1000 on mediocre hardware if I don't like the operating system that's made for it, similar to how I won't buy a Windows phone. So tell me Macfags, how do I install OS X in VMWare or Virtualbox? I have a retail ISO and I get nothing but errors. I use an Intel CPU. No matter what setting I change, Mavericks won't boot. It would appear that Apple products do not "just work". Any advice?

My desktop is a very stable hackintosh with a pair of Xeon X5355s, 16GB of RAM and a pair of Quadro FX4600s. My laptop is a Dell V131 running Gentoo with i3wm, which I'm posting from. Both of them are equally comfy to me.
