So I'm currently sitting in my Comp Sci I programming class and wondering...
Why Java? Or more specifically why am I still here?
Why not teach a more universally useful language like C/C++, or Python (which they teach in an even lower level programming class)? I did all this stuff in high school and hate sitting through it.

All the lecture notes that your tenured prof is using are from 1997 and he doesn't want to re-invent the wheel.

>Why Java?
Because you picked a shit school, anon... also >>57356137

Is this your first semester in CS? Many schools start with java rather than C because noobs have difficulty with pointers.
Does your school not offer an "accelerated" course for this? Or allow you to test and skip this course?

>Why Java?
Because they literally hate you and have no interest in your future
>Or more specifically why am I still here?
Philosophy is down the hall, third right

>python
>useful

i tried testing out of it, but i had forgotten all my java from high school because it had been over a year since i touched java. I figured if i fail the class i'll try taking the placement exam again and hopefully place out of it.

this is my first CS major class. I should've taken a 309 discreet stats class last semester

my school actually has a 97% placement rate of undergrads w/ Comp Sci degrees
Also for all interested this is my second semester of school

>i know java this is sooo booring!!!
>>fails java placement exam
you need this course anon
>>57356033
Because java is more universally useful and used more in the industry than c/c++ and python

>says i need to take course
>skips part where i say i did this in high school
gg
>>57356327
i dont think ill be using Java in my field of Comp Sci. I want to do Massively parallel systems or Computational Math
>>57356033
cos java will "get you a job" like they know the industry. C++ is better and not slow as shite
How easy is it to get into a graduate CS program? I've only got 1 semester left until I have my BS. I've got a 3.8 gpa, but no (relevant) work experience or extra curricular activity going for me. Think I could still get into an okay school?
