>why is this placebo
>why are you poor and you have to chose a keyboard with chink cherry mx knockoffs

Why is the buyers template linked twice?
Why not delete it?
>>
>>57353296
I don't know, but we used to have a buyers guide
>http://pastebin.com/QJD7fSGU
I wouldn't recommend it since its horribly outdated. Also mechanical keyboards have exploded in popularity and now there are options for pretty much everything.
Its much better to use the buyers template and list of your requirements then to go looking through pages and pages of different keyboards asking questions about each one you come across

Where can I get keycap replacements for my CM Quickfire TK for a reasonable price?
I was gifted this keyboard by a friend, and he tried to make some "modifications" to the keycaps.

The biggest problem is the non standard bottom row and I don't really know of anyone that makes specialty keycaps. You could buy individual blank keycaps that will fit, but that's really about it for that row. Everything else is standard which you can buy on places like ebay for super cheap
>>
>>57353683
here goes...
>>
>>57353702
nice....
that bottom row is gonna make things really hard to replace tho without spending a lot of money
>>
>>57353702
Why did he press 4 so much? Why did he press U and M so little?
>>
>>57353735
what about the other ones, though?
and what numbers are we talking about?

>>57353761
that's a question.

Hmmmmmm
>>
>>57354317
it's fully functioning, it's just the keycaps that are kind of fucked
>>
>>57354628

Fair enough, the keycaps make it look worse than actually is then.
Any idea what he was trying to do?
>>
>>57354689
he was trying to mod it, I think he was going for the "blank look".

>>57353351
The whole point of having a buyer's guide is to stop people from asking ANY questions. Put it back.
>>
>>57355461
No it just raises more questions
>>
>>57355987
But its purpose is to stop the questions from happening, so put it back.

Well if you want a Dolch Pac keyboard you have to buy it with the PC. The cheapest ones on ebay are like 300 bucks
>>
>>57356013
We got rid of it beacuse people kept shitposting. Besides just use the buyers template its better for narrowing down your choices. Looking at the buyers guide for a full size keyboard doesnt help if you want it with certain features so the buyers template is better

Been using this every day for almost two years now. Don't plan on changing it in the near future but I need to know if there is a stiffer key than blues. Blues are too light for me, but greens are harder to find. I will probably buy a 60%.

>>
>>57357314
You put the retaining pegs in backwards
>>
>>57357680
Depends on the switches and use case. Click and/or tactile switches provide haptic feedback on switch actuation. A competent typist will use this to increase accuracy and decrease how often they bottom out. Mech switches are also more consistent over their lifespan, so you don't end up compensating for changing switch behavior. Not bottoming out hard all the time is also better for avoiding joint-related RSI.
What they won't do is magically make a shitty typist faster.

I've got the CM Storm Quickfire XT as my first mechanical keyboard and I'm getting the Godspeed SA keycap set. Went with brown Cherry MX switches with o-rings to not disturb my girlfriend. Feels just like a rubber dome keyboard but with much better quality.
I'm spending a fortune on the keycaps because of the numpad and because I need a nordic ISO set, but I love the look.

Das Keyboard 4 all the way, with Cherry MX blues, can't stand the reds and the browns feel too much like a standard rubber dome keyboard.

Have a HHKB Pro JP and the symbols on the keyboard don't match what comes out. Emailed PFU and this is what I have to do:
Because your computer is not correctly recognizing the keyboard, it is necessary to change the registry.

We will recommend the backup of the registry to be taken for safety before you rewrite the registry.

The content of ”\ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ i8042prt \ Paremeters” is change and reboot the personal computer.

I wouldn't say it's worth it compared to other mechanical keyboards which you can get much cheaper with the mx blues, it's really down to personal preference, the matte finish is very nice and it feels good to type on.

Ok so, I need help. I am looking for a new keyboard under $150 USD, and I can't check out on the mechanicalkeyboards site. I used to have a Leopold FC750R with browns, which was top tier in my mind, but it was stolen. Now I am in the market for a new one. I liked browns, but if possible I would prefer to have something that needs a bit more force to actuate. Clears are of course in my head, but I have also been thinking about Blacks and Greens.

My main use would be typing, but I will also be playing a ton of RTS, MOBA, MMO, and FPS games.

What brands/boards would you recommend, and where is a good site to buy them?

If you're feeling truly autistic, you could try to secure a broken Shine 2/3 and put the Shine 5's internals in that. I've been toying with the idea for a while now, but can't really justify blowing the money on a Shine 5 when then only problem with my 3 is that a few LEDs died.

I've done my best to find pics of the internals of both, though, and it looks like the mounting holes should line up.

I'd choose the leopold because it's more compact and the 1800 layout is pretty neat, but you'll have an easier time finding keycaps for the ducky.

Das and wasd are overpriced.
>>
>>57362290
I have a Das, would not recommend. They're very solid standard no frills keyboards and that's all. You're paying a quite high premium just for good build quality (except for the keycaps which are shitty thin ABS you should probably replace) and the brand name alone.
>>
>>57360036
Cost-saving measures, as Unicomp is still using the same original IBM molds.

You can't really compare clicky and non-clicky switches. The feel is too different. There are "tactile" switches (Cherry browns and clears) but they feel much more like linear switches (Cherry browns and reds, Razer orange) than any kind of clicky switch.

What you can do is modify the switches themselves and put landing pads inside to silence the click. That's something I've never tried but every once in a while there's someone who swears by it.

The non standard bottom row makes it hard to replace the stock keycaps once they get shiny. Personally I'd go for rosewill rk9000 instead its 10 bucks more. Logitech has fair build quality and for a $70 keyboard with cherry switches its not too bad

It's probably related to costs management and processing power.

It took Ducky multiple generations before they produced a keyboard with RGB LEDs. Admittedly, Corsair had that since some time, but corsair also had a plethora of issues with their LEDs in the past.

And you wouldn't believe how much little things that you'd expect to cost next to nothing can actually cost.

Add to that that cooler master has probably been planning those RGB boards for some time already, given that they seem to have reacted to community feedback on the Pro M model and fixed that atrocious bottom row that was on the quickfire TK.

when you press a key, it types, I find that even after light use, a rubber dome stops doing this after a month or so.

What i mean is every time the key is pressed, it reliably inputs a key, going from rubber dome to mechanical i found out just how fucking hard i was pressing keys to make them work, this likely contributed to how fucked up my wrists and fingers are now. now, I don't even bottom keys out much anymore, and going to even a new rubber dome pressing keys doesn't type all the time.
>>
>>57357680
just to add. for me the mechanical keyboards price (for me 120$) was justified just because there is no longer a question of 'am i just that shitty a typer, did i not press the key' so on so forth, I know fucking well that if i press a key it will put what i type on screen, no more second guessing what I write or how good i am... I actually bought a Dolch keyboard several years ago and made an adapter for it. I'm not technical-minded at all, so it should be easy for any real /g/entooman...RIGHT?!
Anyway, easy because it "speaks" PS/2.
I took the PS/2 cable off a crappy old rubberdome and confirmed the wire colors online. Bought an RJ45 junction box (I think that's what it was)--RJ11 is the same except it doesn't use one wire or something, so RJ45 is fine.
Then checked the wiring colors on the Dolch (think I found this on geekhack) and stripped the end of each of the PS/2 cable's wires and wrapped them in the corresponding places in the junction box.
That was it. I got a PS/2 to USB adapter, which I think made it 2KRO, but I was using it for typing.

If you are used to laptop keyboards then maybe a tactile switch like matias or clears would be the way to go.
Matias (These switches are actually quieter then rubberdomes):
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php?keyword=&brand=&switch=32&size=&led=&capmat=&capprint=&model=&availability=in_stock_pre&show_kb=off&show_kb=on&show_acc=off

Clears
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php?keyword=&brand=&switch=9&size=&led=&capmat=&capprint=&model=&availability=in_stock_pre&show_kb=off&show_kb=on&show_acc=off

Those switches are rare so there really aren't that many options. You could maybe go for a clicky switch like blues or greens

Blues

Or if you want a truly unique switch then check out buckling springs. They are the only mechanical switch where the tactile and clicky feedback happen at the exact moment of actuation. You can find them at Unicomp's website:

Quads assassinated along with your landlady, good job

There are some VERY cheap ($40 USD) boards these days, like the Magicforce 68 or the AULA Demon King. These are built with clone switches, not the original Cherry brand, but they're cheap enough to try out some different things and you can always mod them if you get bored. You sound like you might enjoy blacks or browns, so I'd start with one of those.

If you're really not sure, you can get a switch tester. However, there are two types of switches that you absolutely won't find on switch testers: Buckling springs (like >>57376006 mentioned) and electrocapacitives (synonymous with the Japanese brand Topre). These are often seen as "luxury" switch types.

Buckling springs were used in the famous IBM Model M keyboards that are pretty much indestructible. They are deliberately designed to have the same tactile feedback as an electric typewriter. People sometimes compare these to "walking in heavy boots on a wooden floor."

Electrocapacitive switches are basically just "rubber domes done right," which sounds dumb at first, but apparently they are heavenly to actually type on, because of the hybrid construction (with a plunger and a separate sensor underneath) where you don't have to bottom out and the keys quickly pop back up under your fingers.

If you want some really fun and tactile switches you could check out alps. Sadly the company's mechanical switch division went bankrupt because their switches were too well built. You can however still buy old keyboards with those switches for really cheap on eBay. Dell AT101w sell for around 40 bucks and are much more durable then all the Chinese keyboards in the same price point. You can also go for apple keyboards (pic related) that also use alps switches and sell for $40, but you need an adapter because apple has to have proprietary connection son everything.

You can also check out alps clones like matias if you want to buy new

Why would you recommend blacks for someone who wants stiffer blues? The difference is signifigant, and blacks are just as hard if not harder to find than greens. I'd say try blacks or reds and see if you like linears, otherwise green or buckling springs.

For green I'd definitely throw you to a pok3r, seeing youre looking for a 60%. Buckling springs aren't easy to find either, being only produced by unicomp, but they feel fucking amazing. Try them out if you get a chance, but warning, they're pretty loud and don't come in anything but full sized iirc, unless you want to spend some on a ibm space saving keyboard.
>>
>>57378045
Thanks a lot, no worries at all! For like 2 bucks more I can get it with a blue back light, fucking great. This keyboard looks great, probably better than the original I linked. How loud do you think the blues would be? I don't wanna annoy anybody lol.
>>
>>57357272
You can get the CODE pretty reliably with greens. It's a little more expensive than a POK3R.

>>

Cherry style switches are really when you bottom them out regardless if they are linear or clicky
>>
>>57378349
But it's a lot easier to not bottom out even with MX Reds compared to rubber domes.
>>
>>57378349
Hmm I guess if I learn to type properly with it, it won't be as loud.

>>57378357
My rubber dome keyboard is pretty loud honestly, and true. I don't think blues will be much louder.

Anyways do both of you like blues? I feel like they might be a little to heavy as well. Browns seem to be the best overall.
>>
>>57378349

This is what surprised me when I tried out my first mechanical keyboards. The store had a keyboard with blues and a keyboard with browns. I was surprised by low little the clicks contributed to the overall noise.
>>
>>57378450

Cherry mx reds actually have a lower actuation force compared to rubberdomes. Some people even report that simply resting their fingers on the keys causes them to actuate

I've got a Ducky one with blues and I love it. They require the same actuation force as rubber domes so they really shouldn't be heavier. Now personally I think cherry tactile switches are pretty underwhelming compared to others like alps or gaterons.
>>
>>57378693
I know they have a low actuation force. It's easier not to bottom out on them because the springs resist more and more as you push them down. I was typing on mine earlier today.
I try not to rest my fingers on them because sometimes they will actuate. When I'm gaming it's not much of a problem, though.

The Cherry click mechanism isn't terribly loud by itself, but it is obnoxiously high-pitched. And all known clicky MX clone equivalents are even worse in that regard.

Compare with what buckling springs or oldschool Alps blues sound like:

>>57378693
>>57378809

Rubber domes go from somewhere around 60g or so of resistance to zero as soon as they collapse. You just go right down to bottoming-out on inertia.

Same thing happens with Topre. Even though you don't have to bottom out capacitive domes to register a keypress, you can't feasibly avoid it because to the force curve.

Domes also snap back up with a pop instead of a spring's more gradual bounce, which can cause loud clacking on the upstroke depending on board construction.
>>
>>57379435
>loud clacking on the upstroke
This is basically what Topre silencing reduces.
Also, reds bottom out at about 60cN if im not wrong. I'll check when next night.

Just got a motospeed CK104 with gay RGB per key lighting for £40. I don't much care for the lighting but it can easily be switched off (plus it's controlled entirely by the onboard processor). I've never heard Cherry Blue switches in person but they're a lot higher pitched than I thought they'd be. The sound is oddly non intrusive as well as satisfying.

The weird thing is that it immediately upped my WPM from 75 to 85 with zero mistakes.
>>

>I've never heard of o-rings, other silencing mods for mx switches, new mx silents, or matias quiet clicks
Literally all quieter than a regular rubber dome board.

>>
>>57382485
Do o rings affect the feel of the keyboard?
>>
>>57382496
Depends on the keycap and the size of the o-ring, but yes. The bottom out won't feel as hard. Might be too mushy for you, but they're cheap so it's worth a shot if you want a quieter board.
>>

Something similar to the razer green switches. Prefer less than $100 with amazon prime!

I also type about ~130wpm so the feel of the razer keyboard that I played with at best buy felt great. I wouldn't mind buying a razer keyboard either, just want to explore my options before I make a purchase.

Another keyboard I was looking into was the ducky shine 5 but its a bit too pricey since my budget is less than $100.

Also what's the difference between just MX blues and cherry MX blues. I guess I don't know what either "cherry" or "MX" mean.
>>
>>57382810
Forgot to mention, I would like light up switches but I don't care about the colour. More so just be nice little light in my room.
>>
>>57382897
Rosewill is a budget imitation version of Filco keyboards which sell for 150+

Tomoko is just a budget keyboard that has some budget knockoff switch

MX switches are manufactured by the Cherry corp and when their patents expired other manufactures began to copy them.
These knockoffs are very similar to cherry switches but there might be some inconsistency between the switches since their quality control isn't as high as cherry.

Other manufactures like Gateron took the cherry design and improved them making it even smoother and more tactile.

There is nothing wrong with buying knockoff switches, but some people prefer cherry due to their tighter tolerances and more consistent feel.

From experience cherry switches are lighter and have a lower pitch compared to their knockoffs.

>>57382922
If you want a keyboard with a back light then check out any of these that are under 100

Just figured how to fix my problem. Go to language settings and select the Japanese keyboard. The default one after restarting wont be it but that can be changed by removing the QWERTY keyboard so the Japanese is the only one then add it back if you want to. I did.
