i did not know the snes was capable of this

SNES games could use their own sound bank with real instrument sounds and then use the SPU to modify these instrument sounds to get more range out of them.

It's why SNES sounds amazing compared to the Genesis, which just sound like a bunch of farts.

Ducking gay retard

If you want something actually impressive, listen to the Gimmick OST.

this megadrive Demo is probably my favourite

the megadrive soundchip was raw machine
>>
While we're on the topic of old hardware audio, where/why did the Genesis go so wrong?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuIjwgPIQtg
>>
>>57346333
The bad audio was from the CDX, basically a Genesis/MegaCD combo
>>
>>57346357
But why did they feel the need to dumb down the hardware? Was it just to save shekels?
>>
>>57346333
oh dear fucking christ
>>
>>57346380
Well, the Megadrive/Genesis was selling like a mad cunt at the time, that's why
>>
>>57346239
It's a good OST but it also had some additional audio chip in the cartridge.
>>
>>57346380
yeah, after the VA6 revision they really went down hill due to cost cutting.

Except the snes isn't a MIDI capable device you retard.
>>
>>57346239
that is pretty impressive

More Genesis shit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1lhB8ojVPI

even used FM for the drums, impressive

NEAT
>>
>>57346541
The sinister laughter at the beginning really gets me. It's so stupidly hard to make FM sound like anything but digital ear-rape.
>>
>>57346589
It depends on how well you understand Frequency Modulation synthesis, and yes, the YM2612 does make it hard since it limits you to 4 operators and only lets you use a sinewave as the waveform. Big boy FM is even harder to understand but allows for more room to create sounds like that laugh

Genesis could do some crazy shit with its processing. Look at the game Red Zone.

FM can sound pretty nice with heavy music like that

not so much for other types

imo genesis shines best with vaguely spooky/sad music

also, it sounds cleanest when the musician doesn't bother trying to make something sound like real instruments

That's plain untrue.

Ristar for example is a shining example of Donkey Kong Country style atmospheric music

For an SNES tune thread there sure is a lot of sega...

I think Genesis did heavy music well because it was so bassy and abrasive
