How difficult would it be to make a program to play Magic with me?

I once heard that the worst thing about Magic players is that they stink. Is it true, OP?

I imagine the rules would probably be the easiest part, since the rulebook is basically written like an algorithm anyways. The problem would be designing the program to make actual, sensible, semi-decent moves.

This. I played it for years when I was younger and there's lots of strategy behind it, besides a really big amount of rules.
It would be really awesome if someone could make an AI that would learn to play Magic and eventually design its own deck based on the current meta.

I miss the days when u/w fish would get you everywhere.

Making standard rules work is not so bad, but if you want legacy/all cards/rules then its extremely demanding, take a look at xmage.
