Are laptops really necessary anymore?

Everywhere you look you keep hearing about the latest 2-4k laptop turds with low-power overheating CPUs and GPUs.

On most modern laptops, you can't:
>upgrade the CPU
>upgrade the GPU
>upgrade the RAM
>sustain high clock frequencies above ~2-2.5 Ghz on the CPU when doing intensive tasks like video encoding
>upgrade the display
>easily clean out all the dust that accumulates in your heatsink

The only thing they really have going for them is portability but Android phones have pretty much replaced most of the functions you used to use laptops for desu.

It just seems more logical to have some flagship phone and a desktop at home. This is coming from someone who will sell his 15" 2013 macbook pro and assemble an i5 6600K + Rx 480 micro-ATX desktop build.
>>
>>57333591
>On most modern laptops
Don't you mean on most laptops? It's hardly exclusive to modern ones.
>>
>>57333591
Go outside.
>>
thing of it this way
most people dont need rx480
most people dont to intensive tasks
most people dont need to upgrade their screens cpu or gpu
youre saying these people shouldnt buy pcs at all? and do everything on their phones?
>>
>>57333591

just depends on the person, if you need to use word or excel on the go using your phone is a shit option, if all you do on the go is browse and text then you can probably get away with no laptop

for the average non gamer person just having a normal laptop alone with no tower is probably the best idea
>>
>>The only thing they really have going for them is portability but Android phones have pretty much replaced most of the functions you used to use laptops for desu

laptops aren't meant to be upgraded.

buy sturdy laptop refurbished for 300 bucks, ride it til it dies or is too obsolete, rinse repeat

I've had 3 laptops in the last decade, never been too behind the curve to notice (don't play games) and have spent less than 1000 dollars total on them
>>
>>57334890
That doesn't apply to x30 and lower Thinkpads.

It's one of the reasons why /g/entoomen like them.
>>
>>57333591
>On most modern laptops, you can't:
>>upgrade the GPU
>>upgrade the RAM
>>sustain high clock frequencies above ~2-2.5 Ghz on the CPU when doing intensive tasks like video encoding
>>upgrade the display
>>easily clean out all the dust that accumulates in your heatsink

Name one era when you could do this on most laptops.
>>
>>57334971
See >>57334971, The x20/x30 T and W-series can do all of those.
>>
>>57334970
/g/aymen like them because they're built like tanks and cheap enough for their broke asses to afford
I don't think upgradeability matters when any unupgraded modern laptop is better than the most upgraded x30,
>>
>>57334971
I forgot to delete "upgrade the ram", most laptops can do this even today.
>>57334985
Those are a few models, far from being "most laptops". Also see >>57334987
>>
>>57333591
Did you fell for the ultrabook meme or something? NORMAL notebooks have swappable eDP displays, RAM and HDD at the very least(I personally never encountered the ones with upgradeable CPU but they probably exist in some gaymen ones). Throttling is hit or miss. Mine can sustain furmark+prime95 on stock frequencies, with sometimes turbo boosting.
>>
>>57334903
Most people should be able to just dock their phones and use it as a PC on a traditional monitor, yes.
>>
>>57333591
I have a gaming laptop.
It's default clock speed is 2.6GHz, boosts up to 3.6GHz.
I can upgrade the ram, display, clean out the dust

If you're buying crap hardware you're the only one to blame.
>>
>>57334985
*meant see >>57334970

>>57334994
He said name an era, i named the era of those laptops.

>>57334987
Well true nowadays doesn't matter much but it's possible and on their era it was fucking great, there's also the "running 3 drives at the same time" thing.

Also as a fun fact you can slap a 2760qm on the old t420 and get like 66-70% or so of the 6770hq performance which is supposedly the best laptop cpu nowadays. Of course it's not viable for extended workloads but it's possible.
>>
>>57335037
OP was complaining that "most modern laptops" don't allow to do that stuff, I asked to name an era when such a thing was allowed by most laptops. The truth is, it was never allowed by most laptops, just a few select ones. Best thing to do is to buy milspec laptops though, those are expandable and easy to clean.
Also what do you mean by "extended workloads"?
>>
>>57333591
yes
>>
>>57335037
>>57335065
Also wasn't the GPU integrated on X30s?
>>
>>57335017
>gaming laptop
>don't buy crap hardware
>implying
>>
>>57335065
>Also what do you mean by "extended workloads"?
Well that, running the cpu at full speed continuously for an extended period of time.

Using a quad core CPU on a t420 with cooler designed for a dual core CPU will lead to heat and throttling issues. The T/W5xx shipped with quad core CPUs and adequate coolers though iirc.

>>57335076
Some had iGPU or iGPU with nVidia dGPU but it's upgradable via ExpressCard, you can shove a desktop gpu there.
>>
>>57335093
Dunno about laptops but "gaymen" CPUs and CPUs are the cream of the crop - only the silicon lottery winners can be overclocked to any meaningful degree.

>>
As someone who uses laptops almost exclusively... yes.

Unlike a desktop, they are portable.

Unlike a smartphone or tablet, you can use them to do actual work. The only time a tablet comes close to the productive capabilities of a laptop is when it has an attached keyboard and Windows or Linux installed.

>The only thing they really have going for them is portability but Android phones have pretty much replaced most of the functions you used to use laptops for desu.

Yeah. Nah. Editing documents on a phone sucks. Writing programs on a phone sucks. Many video games on phones... just suck.

>It just seems more logical to have some flagship phone and a desktop at home. This is coming from someone who will sell his 15" 2013 macbook pro and assemble an i5 6600K + Rx 480 micro-ATX desktop build.

I use a laptop and no desktop. Only reason for a stationary computer is when you need an assload of computing power. For gaming, graphic design, some server work maybe, I can see a point. Otherwise, the Core i7 6700HQ in my laptop does a pretty damn good job at most productive tasks I need done.

They have their cons sure, but we're still going to be using laptops for a looong while yet OP.
>>
>>57335007
That would be the most practical thing to do, but the average person wouldn't know how to do that. A lot of people don't even know how to use a computer to the extent where manufacturers need to set most things up for people, like preinstalling Windows. Unless manufacturers advertise and sell products to utilize a docking system I doubt it would catch on. They wouldn't though since they would make less money.

That's pretty close to 2.5 GHz and you're not showing the frequent times it dips below 2.5 GHz.

Anyway that's still shit especially for gaming. A lot of games can now efficiently use more than 2 threads bow so your overheating FPS would constantly be bottlenecking the GPU.

Also have fun with your laptop CPU dying in a few years from constant overheating.

In all seriousness, if that's what you're into, you could always get a compact bluetooth keyboard for note taking on your phone for classes or whatever reason you might have. I'm a poor uni student so I feel for the thinkpad meme and bought one, but I love it so I can't really complain.

Other phone memes I often see:

Exclusive to Android:
>muh processor speed
>muh ram

My normie friends shit on my Z10 because "it has no apps". When they say this they are talking about shitty stuff like Snapchat filters or similar meme BS.
Of the easily available phones the only ones I'd gladly change it for are Q10, Passport and maybe iPhone SE.
As for the apps, I have a great SMTP client, capable browser, office suite, PDF reader, whatsapp, waze, mega, winrar, and even some games. It's compatible with most Android apps (although I don't install the ones that require Play Services). It's also quick despite having only a dual-core running at 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM, because it isn't a resource hog like memedroid. I don't know what else I could need.

>>

Nice digits, but what did you mean by that?
I was referring to how new androids are all about having 190 cores, one gorillion gigahertz and a terabyte of ram while still being slower than the competition with less powerful processors.
I first realized this when the N9 was just out and it was faster than the flagship samsung of the time while offering better multitasking.
Nowadays iPhone has the lead on being quick even though Android packs the most powerful hardware.
>>
>>57340019
Ram is also for bloated OS like Android is. It simply has too much overhead to do anything with a modest amount of resources.
>>
If you can't understand the appeal of laptops then you're probably a NEET who only uses their PC for gaymen.
>>
>>57340139
ARM cores are basically blocks that carry diferent instruction sets and various codecs and cryptoprocessors. Also, their MEGAHURZ is the highest frequency available but they don't clock that high because of heat issues and powersaving. Both iOS and Android run fast on iPhone and NExus/Samsung flagships, but slow down after update. That's becasue newer versions are suited for newer haardware and have planned obsolescence in mind too.
>>
>>57340229
iPhones use much lower end CPUs though and they run faster
A friend of mine has a 5S and it's lightning fast. He used to have a 4S and it was great but the battery capacity was too poor. Meanwhile my friends with Android phones have to do factory resets once in a while to keep them usable.

Do you work for a living?

Many people use notebook computers on business trips and while commuting. They also use them in work environments which require that a computing terminal be carried from one place to another easily.

If a notebook computer is well designed, and then well-configured by the user, there is almost never a chance for overheating.
