Exciting as fuck. No one I knew in real life had this hobby. Tons of beautiful ANSI art, interesting discussions on whatever topics, chats and downloads. The idea that you can "talk" to several people at once without actually speaking was mindblowing.

It was such a time when you truly knew you were on top of something big that only mainstreamed several years later. The rebellious nature of the scene is not present anymore other than to some extent in boards like 4chan. Retards were then of course, most of us were probably 14-20 yr old. Good times, definitely.

Seems really cool. I wish I was around at that time. It seemed like whole BBS/internet dawn really brought out the best aspects of the internet. Sharing, meeting people, connecting, etc.

I made a thread about bbs on britfa.gs a while ago and a guy said it was such an inconvenience compared to how the web is. Although i can imagine the awesomeness of how niche and fringe it was

The BBS and early internet was more anonymous back then. Nobody would upload their pictures anywhere, if you did you were a retard. Also, because setting up a connection required some interest and skillz, the worst scum was filtered out.

Back then, finding like-minded people was one of the benefits because it was easier than in real-life but nowadays it's a lot easier and the spectrum is practically infinite.

I wish we could too. The net was so much better then. Though, I'm sure that's how usenet felt before the general public could use it, too. But god damn smartphones fucked things up so bad it bled out into real life.

Unless you were rich it was mostly a local affair, aside from Fidonet and other international echo networks.

Your local BBSes and the people frequenting them were usually from your own neighborhood so you often knew the face behind the handle. Registering to a BBS normally involved callback verification to your phone number to prevent abuse, so there was a measure of accountability since the Sysop would have your proper phone number on file.

That's not to say you couldn't beige box your way around that using a neighbor's line, but that wasn't common.
