>I bet you also have a raspberry pi aka "dust collector"
I do and it technically does collect dust, because I was going to use it as a Plex server and direct to my HTPC. Too bad it's shit at that.

This
It's 50GB, so it's not really great for file hosting. I could just pay less for Google Drive space.

What is with /g/ and having servers and storage debates? A normal person does not need a dedicated server. I have a 500GB HDD that I have never been able to fill and most of my work can be synced to my phone and email.
What do you people do with all this storage and cloud services?
>>57325170
Either way, VPS I have still isn't a good deal for that.
>>57325170
>Whats with these people on a technology board using technology?
Wew, lad
>>57325170
>What is with /g/ and having servers and storage debates
>/g/ technology
It's my dev server: gitlab, various websites, mailserver, apiserver

Said the pleb.

Thats just like... your opinion, man

You deleted your post, I thought it would be helpful to repost it. Maybe someone else has has use for your intresting opinion.

That's retarded for an IT guys, gamers, graphic designers and a ton of other people/professions. Doesn't even take into account that this is a technology board.
Move ssh port into 3000+ range, disable root login
>>57325170
Movies, music, I think artists that use uncompressed images have large-ass filesizes, video editors and a lot of other shit.
>>57325511
I should do that. Forgot about the casual scans.

I'm a photog, and my need a backup of all my work (600GiB since 2011). A dedicated server is more redundency, and more security.
>most of my work can be synced to my phone and email.
Same. But the server that sync that isn't jewgle.
>What do you people do with all this storage and cloud services?
Because I use multiple computers and cloud is easier than portable storage.
Also, file sharing.

What service do you end up using? I imagine that gets expensive.
>>57325511
If you have a strong root password, you shouldn't really need to do this right?...
not the new 'got a rpi' is it?
fuck you
>>57325933
I already said I had one. I tried using it to play mounted movies on my NAS and it sucked for it. So now it just sits there. It honestly isn't even worth putting a bouncer on it either.
>>57325170
Mumble and Teamspeak servers, mail servers, VPNs(stupid on a dedicated IPV4 VPS), and generally whatever you want.
Why do you think a server is for storage?
>>57325913
if you absolutely need to allow root to login via password you should install fail2ban
>>57325970
Use a damn key and set PermitRootLogin without-password
Host a tt-rss server
>>57325600
> I imagine that gets expensive.
I use a pi. At first it's really cheap.
>the raspi : 40€
>cable, power, storage: you already have that somewhere in a drawer.
It gets expensive if you want a better router, more storage, full PC with SATA... But it's very optional.
>>57326017
I'll probably do that.
Host a website and run irssi/weechat in tmux.
>yeah, ill just buy a vps without knowing what to do with it
fug off
Host your own exchange server then run game servers and let cucks pay to own a slot
