Ubuntu only created Unity because the stupid gnome devs fucked up their default UI. If it werent' for that Unity may well have never been created.

you can blame the trends in modern design languages.

Every desktop environment and theme across all operating systems is cold, inhumane, flat, bright garbage, no matter whether it's linux (gnome3 and kde), os x or modern reiterations of Windows.

It is impossible to achieve the warm and comfortable feeling on such interface.

The pre-ambiance ubuntu theme was literally called "Human"

Neon is a distro based on LTS versions of ubuntu but that ships recent versions of both plasma and qt (including the applications because a lot of qt packages depends on the qt version frozen on kubuntu). The distro is crafted directly by the KDE developers so it's very good if you want the most recent versions of KDE software, the rest is like kubuntu 16.04.

I'm using it on the work laptop and works pretty fine, is very lightweight considering that plasma is not aimed to be light, uses less than 500mb for me on startup.
>>
>>57317426
It's not that easy to change the established desktop paradigm and it may not be a good idea always. For me plasma is a much more powerful desktop environment than the one windows has and to be fair windows has implemented a lot of features that was present on other operative systems before. The important part is that is much more customizable than windows, if you don't like something you can change it easily.
>>
>>57314961
You mean Ubuntu mate?

Also, try Solus. It's even more comfy.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

The theme is called Arc, but not sure how the taskbar looks special.

>>
>>57337709
Do you mean just ClassicShell's, erm ClassicShell portion or do you mean ClassicShell in general? (ClassicStart, ClassicShell, Explorer Bar)

Because ClassicStart is still god-tier, don't know why you wouldn't recommend it. Works amazingly and I install it immediately on any 8.1/10 installation of mine. I just deselect any of the other shit because yes, the rest of the features included in the ClassicShell package are garbage.

I don't know, I only wanted the transparent taskbar but I really don't like the start menu part. Maybe I'm retarded but I like my normal Windows 10 start menu (I launch proggies by pressing windows key and typing a few letters then pressing enter). I think the ClassicStart is ugly as FUG

I'd like to remind all of you guys that given how comfy and feature-full old Linux DEs (mainly gnome 2) looked they were buggy, laggy and unusable pieces of trash.
Visual artifacts, no vsync, mouse lag (this is still the case with mate, last time i checked was ubuntu mate 16.04), full screen/resolution issues, settings menus that crashed whole DE.
Only reason you would ever think that things were better is the horrid state gnome3/unity/kde4 were at release.
I can agree that most of design of for example gnome is pure shit for a desktop computer, but the gap in overall stability is big, also considering amount of shit effects added performance is not as bad as presented. Sure its bloat but if you think that gnome2 was super comfy and amazing you could just tweak xfce4 into working/looking like gnome and get much better user experience.
>>
I honestly think these are usually easier on the eyes. I know there's this trend of making everything look "comfy", some of them don't look that good, just old or pretentious. But the simple non-fully white or dark colors, easily distinguishable buttons an non-completely flat graphics are pretty good on the eyes.

For instance Windows 2000 or OS9 look pretty good in my opinion. I don't get though why people are obsessed with Windows 95 and bitmap fonts.

How is it ugly as fuck though? It looks just like 7 and previous's start menu. It contrasts heavily from Windows 10's environment, I can agree on you with that, but the start menu itself is a clone of the original so what other than the contrast makes it ugly? You can also change the theme of it in its settings.

Oh well.
We now have a 1-button Gnome, outdated/dead XFCE/LXQT, and a very gay unstable KDE.
> The year of the linux desktop
Actually it's weird how it went all downhill.
Back then everyone thought these environments will just iron out the bugs, like Kopete will implement MSN one time and things will be all cool as fuck.

But that never happened.

Why?

Because Linux developers are mostly failed or aspiring enterprise developers.

That's why current Linux desktop environments are adding bloat and spending loads of time on visual effects rather than making a swift and efficient work environment.

I remember when the entire point of Linux was that you could install it rather than Windows and gain a massive boost in performance. I doubt that is still true, though it could have been if GNOME and KDE just focused on what's important: good software.
