what is the most secure OS/distro to date?
by secure I mean secure from hackers, not online privacy from being tracked by NSA/govt..

I'm writing a book, and while the most safe would simply be to use a computer with its Internet-driver/device (or whatever it is called, semantics) removed or something else like a type-writer, I'd still like the ability to have Internet on it.

I possess very limited knowledge on newer malware and hacker-shit, but given how easy it is to just send someone a malicious-containing packet to another's PC w/o phishing them into downloading a Trojan, I do not think MBAM + good firewall will be sufficient. So-called 'antikey-loggers' seem useless too.

Tails OS is probably the most secure OS up to date.

tails isn't exactly security focused, it's meant for leaving no trace behind, not securing you against threats. not saying that it's insecure, but it's also not the point of the distro. you'd have been better off naming Qubes, Subgraph, or Whonix.
>>
>>57310611
I have been using tails for very long time so I did not hear about Subgraph or Whonix.

Although tails is not security focused it's still one of the best OS to protect yourself from both the government and hackers.

Qubes is also an option I guess but I never got deep into that OS so I don't fully understand it.

Qubes would be one of the 'most secure' at the moment. However, I found Qubes to be a major pain in the ass. It seems clunky to use because everything is compartmentalized. You cannot really freely copy and paste using the clipboard between certain domains (which is by design for security) which forces you to plan out certain workflows much more carefully.

Subgraph will be the daddy once it is finished but it is still in alpha at the moment.

Any idea how to encrypt a folder or just make it so if someone tries to open you need a password to open it?

Using arch cinnamon if it matters. Just for porno vid folder non cp fbi want list shit just want simple password needed

You can use ecryptfs, it uses your user password.

Qubes for malware
Tails for hiding
Whonix for not getting assassinated
>>

thanks will check into it

Qubesos should be your first choice. You can compartmentalize as deep as you want, protecting from exploits by isolation. Provides better protection against firmware based attacks via usb/Bluetooth/Wi-Fi by restricting those devices to their own vm. Debian, fedora and whoronix vm templates.

Disadvantages:
Steep leaving curve (but not as bad as Gentoo)
No hardware accelerated video
Currently kernel 4.4 which sucks for skylake

Am I retard?

Or does Whonixhas to be run in a VM? So wouldn't it be only as secure as the host?

or am I retard?
>>
>>57313242
Yes, but it's designed to be run in a VM unlike Tails. Obviously you wouldn't want to be hosting it on Windows.
>>
>>57313448
So then whats a good distro to use with Whonix?
>>
>>57313242
Tails/whonix don't protect against exploits in the attack surface of your machine (software and firmware running, ex browser, email client etc). At least they can be run from usb to help isolate state (your user profile) from the base os (cleared after every reboot, assuming malware doesn't modify the underlying boot image). But if installed to the drive, they are just as vulnerable as a normal Ubuntu system.

Qubes gives you another layer on top, using a template vm to boot, and then storing state in the appvm (which has its binaries reset to the underlying template vm after each restart of the appvm). The attack surface is reduced to the individual appvm, and the hypervisor managing the system.

I believe that you can use it with Qubes.
