What is the best premium laptop in the market?

Requirements:

>should be fully compatible with Linux
>At least 2540x1440 resolution
>Should be sexy thin (pic related)
>Nice trackpad
>Solid keyboard with a decent travel distance
>Full metal body - zero plastic
>At least 16GB RAM
>At least 512GB SSD
>At least quad core, latest gen i5/i7
>10+ hours of actual battery life

I really don't care about graphics (even integrated graphics). I don't care about price either (I'm not a poor fag).

Please don't reply with the thinkpad meme.
>>
If you have money.
I would choose new MacBook pro. Seriously it's good but 4 usb-c will probably drive you mental.
Also 10+ hours it has only 10 hours of battery life so just be warned.
>>
There's no such laptop
>>
buy the 2015 macbook pro
>>
>>57307660
Dell xps 15 developer edition.

Comes pre installed with ubuntu linux, so everything probably works.

Alternitivly, you could get an xps with windows on it and install linux.
>>
>>57307707
xps 15 looks pretty good
>>
>>57307707
the touchpad is crap however, which was a requirement in OP's post
>>
I would suggest that you pick what is most important to you and go from there.
Macbooks have the all alu body with high resolution, but they don't have the good keyboard or the battery life. And I doubt the new ones are good if you want to run linux, their history of supporting anything is not great.
Thinkpads have most of what you listed, but they are plastic.
Dell has most of what you want, but their battery and although I don't know about their linux support.
Asus is very much like apple these days, terrible keyboard, but everything is shiny as fuck.

If you have the money, buy one of each, try it out for a week and send back the ones you don't like.
If you don't have THAT much cash, buy one at a time like other people do until you have made up your mind.
>>
>>57307798
why can't a company make a laptop with everything? Every company has a series of laptops that have exactly one or two missing features. Fucking annoying.

I'd gladly pay a lot of money to the company that does everything.

>>

>>
What about the thinkpad x1 carbon?
>>
>>57307979
Not OP but I am considering the X1 Carbon / X1 Yoga / Surface Book / XPS.

I am reaaally torn.

Currently theres a surface book deal on though where you get a 'free' xbox one slim and fifa 17, which you can sell on for at least £250. This is will all models but the most basic i5 version, so an i5/8gb ram / dGPU base / 256GB ssd is £1439.10 inc VAT, sell xbox, turns out to around 1.2k.

Sooo, so tempted.
>>
>>57307660
if you care about size, weight and aesthetics: maxed out 15" mbp.
otherwise: maxed out 15" dell xps
>>
>>57307979
>>57308057
Not OP either but I have an X1 Carbon 4th gen. Gets about 6-7 hours of battery for me on medium settings with Debian KDE or Windows 7. The charging is really fast and many people, myself included, don't spend more than 5 hours away from an outlet on any normal day. The laptop is really light so tossing it in a bag with the charger is a good idea. Mine has an i7, 8GB of memory, and a 512GB SSD.
>>
>>57308101
What screen size? I know 15" is less battery life than 13".. Hence the ask.
>>
Last gen MacBook pro. You might even be able to find a few on clearance now as the new ones come out.

>>

>>
>>57308101
do you do software development on it? if so how does it perform?
>>
I'm in the same boat as OP basically.
I've been looking at the surface book with dgpu, the x1 carbon and.. the macbook pro 13". I am struggling with making a decision. I need it to be max 14", able to play some games, so that means either an ok config from the get go or having thunderbolt (for egpu). Also needs to be portable, look good and have a great display. I am ready to make a big investment.

I love the x1 carbon, but it has no thunderbolt. Neither does the surface book, but it has the puny dgpu tho. The MacBook on the other hand has thunderbolt, but its keyboard is bad and it's overpriced. I can't decide which of them I like better on an aesthetic level. Screen preference is probably something like MacBook pro > Surface Book > x1 Carbon. So overall I might have been in favor of the macbook, if it wasn't for the mandatory emoji bar with the higher end processor.

So I'm kinda in a tie. Please help me. I can't stop thinking about this and it's sabotaging my life. Any input (or other recommendations)? What I am afraid of is buying the macbook pro 13", just to potentially see the next gen surface book/x1 carbon incorporate thunderbolt.

They had the offer on amazon too the other day, but it seems there are no 'bundle offers' left available. So MS store is the only place I know where you can now get this deal.

>>57308172
They already offer versions with a dedicated GPU base, is this what you mean?

Also I don't intend to do HEAVY gaming other than maybe Civ V/VI. Some light photoshop work, no video rendering or anything.

If they do release a new base with beefier GPUs inside I reckon they will just offer them at a higher price as a package and maybe sell the base alone for £xxx.xx amount.

Guess I'm a bit late to this, but here's a thought anyway:

>>57308152
I have an X1 running Linux. It's freaking great and I can run 2x external 1440p monitors off it, has good battery life, processor is more than sufficient for the type of software development I do, even when it's in a VM, and the keyboard is decent (though not quite as good as T-series thinkpads in my experience).

I don't play games though. I couldn't guess how it would do. If games are Tier 1 concern for you, I would go for an XPS13 with an eGPU, since it's got Thunderbolt 3 in the latest model. I cared more about Linux compatibility, and despite Dell's progress with the XPS "Developer Edition", Thinkpads are the most reliable Linux machines, hands down.
>>
>>57308199
not over thunderbolt 3
>>
Newest 15-inch MacBook Pro if you can get it.
>>
>>57307978
>it either works or doesnt work
Nice black and white thinking. Some trackpads work better than others. Apple trackpads may as well be their own input device with how much better they are compared to a normal trackpad.
>>
>>57308201
>Yes, I do. It's really good.
thanks
>>
>>57308235
I don't think the USB-C ports are that bad though, they can do many things more than regular USB-A, it's just that people have not adapted much yet, so early adopters have to I guess live with it.
>>
>>57308242
if they are so much better if cant be too hard to say why they are better?
by which metric?
>>
>>57308216
I have been considering the xps 13 as well, but I want a good looking, well built machine that I won't be wanting to swap out in a few months. Call me a fag, but I just really enjoy a good design. Is the display really better? As far as I have heard the surface book's is better. And also, without having seen the new macbook pro's, I saw a review saying that it's pretty fantastic, which I believe.

>>57308223
Yeah if it just had thunderbolt I would definitely go for the X1. When do you think it's scheduled for an update?
>>
>>57308282
display isnt better than surface books

if you dont think xps 13 looks sexy as fuck idk what to say to you
each to their own i guess
>>
>>57308277
Many trackpads still don't do precise, per pixel two finger scrolling. They don't do multi-finger gestures well, almost never have a physical click, and most importantly don't have the right acceleration for a trackpad, but that last issue is purely a software one and even affects Apple's trackpads when used with Windows.

The fact Windows doesn't have trackpad gestures like OS X is a big issue and the alternatives aren't very reliable.
>>
>>57307660
t460p
>>
>>57308302
I said that it isn't. But yes I mean the bezel-less display IS sexy, but the build quality and choice of materials is meh. It's not that it's plastic - take the X1 carbon. That is a sexy beast and it's all plastic, but well put together and you can feel it's durable
>>
>>57308305
trackpad on my xps13 can do per pixel scrolling as well as "rolling" scrolling
windows have 2 multi finger gestures(switch window and return to desktop) and they both work fine, theres probably software that allows for more but i dont see the need for that
you can change the acceleration in the options, i dont like it so i have it turned off oh and it has physical click

what gestures does os x have that you commonly use?
>>
>>57308362
OS X supports 5 finger touch. Does the XPS 13 have that?

Well maybe things have gotten better over the years, but I've not heard much good.

4 finger swipe up to show all my windows
4 finger swipe down to show all my windows for the current application
4 finger swipe left/right to change workspaces
pinch to zoom in on websites like you would on a phone (as opposed to scaling elements on the page like Ctrl-+/- would) which is useful for boorus
pinch to zoom out to do pic related
Also flick scrolling on long pages. That's an important one as well.

4 finger tap brings up action center(place to turn on bluetooth/wifi/airplane mode/brightness etc.)
pinch to zoom doesnt seem to exist

I forgot about "force touch"ing on OS X. If you don't have force touch it's a three finger tap.
Pic related is what it does, among other things.
This is way too useful and every OS should have something like it.

PLEASE RECOMMEND ME A LAPTOP:

So I've got an old HP Pavilion, by old I mean around 3 years.

Now I can use it daily fine, to be really honest it doesn't bring me any problems except for some Linux compatibility issues on occasion but I get over that.

I'm looking for a laptop to maybe buy in the future when the price drops so here are some things I want:

-Full Compatibility with Linux
-1080p or Up Resolution
-Separate graphics card not onboard (maybe if it's good enough?)
-1TB above storage with high RPM
-Fast CPU, i5 Up
-Nice trackpad, maybe that red circular thing on Thinkpad (sorry i dont know the name, dont call pleb)
-Numberpad on the right maybe (yes i know but i like it)
-USB 3.0 ports
-hdmi port
-headphone jack, sd card slot maybe, cd slot maybe
-Good battery life, and I mean really good, my HP battery is terrible
-Low temperature
-Good network card
-Decent speakers

Thanks if anyone replies.

2540x1600 for 13" laptops so the scaled resolution is 1280x800 and 15" with 2880x1800 with a scaled resolution of 1440x900

In the original Ubuntu, they clocked the CPU lower than the default, but this doesn't work in any other OS.
Thermald and the pstate drive also fuck it up completely (fuck calibrating and manual config).
It's in turbo mode way too often, and the fan is almost always on.
Battery life has become complete shit.
I'm looking for a new laptop, and I really like the looks, specs and size/weight of the XPS, but I don't want this to happen again.

Should I go with the new mbp or the new surface book?

I'm an engineering student. Right now I have a 15" hp envy with 16 gb ram, 1 tb ssd, and an i7. I also have an ipad air that I use for notes.

I'm looking at the high end surface book to replace both, or getting a 15" mbp with weaker specs along with a new tablet.

2560x1700 with a high DPI UI like Chrome OS would give you means a workspace that's comparable to 1280x850. This is why 13" laptops are all shit. Get a 2880x1800 or 3200x1800 laptop, desu.

A 13 inch laptop is going to have a workspace that is under 1080p. A 22 inch monitor is going to have at least a 1080p workspace.

I actually agree.
Buy a nice, light, portable and CONNECTIVE laptop which you can use to do shit on the go.

Your MBP can connect to 4 screens?
I. DON'T. CARE.
Get a fucking desktop for that!

Laptops are for light work, programming and browsing. Do not do modeling on your laptop, do not game on your laptop, do not render videos on your laptop. What the fuck is wrong with you?

No, macOS is more similar to windows than linux because macOSs microkernel.

On a rMBP can you set the scaling to 1.5x instead of 2.0x

The real question is how do you define best. Are you running VMs? Would you install homebrew on your Mac do you have uses for that stuff?

Do you need something ultra reliable or ultra portable?

Usually I say Lenovo Carbon X1 is best for generic laptop.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
