How easy would it be to set up a 4chan ark, for someone with

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

How easy would it be to set up a 4chan ark, for someone with little website creation experience? Is the forum software upon which 4chan is based very customized and freely available?

I'd just be limiting it to british /pol/ users really. I guess a standard BB forum would do but the 4chan image board format would be nice

Nah mate brit/pol/ threads get about 50 users per thread with about 16 threads per day, if all users went with the same posting rate it could easy be 1600 posts per day, my only worry is in how much bandwidth that would make.

Already been happening for the last 10 years in the form of other chans. Unfortunately these always end up being circlejerks a la irc or bbs. you need to learn to go with the flow and not just make some alternate shitty site every time things don't go your way. your site will go to shit within a few months as you find out it's just too easy to hit the ban button as your shitty interests boil to the top and you ban everyone over nothing

>Source: last 10 years of shitty alternate chans that pop up over 2 weeks to 4 years before exploding because the site admin tries to cash out or just jerk off and ban everything

>>
>>57285862
It wouldn't be that much if you limited the multimedia, which is 4chan's problem. 150+ images can exist in each thread and each of those can be, what, 5MB? Then you have to serve those 5MB images to each person currently viewing the thread which, for an active thread, is probably somewhere in the hundreds if not thousands of people. A text only board or one with very limited image capabilities would be far easier to service.

That's nothing, really. You could easily do that with a couple low powered desktop computers for redundancy.
>>
could it be possible for someone to make a chan that spreads server loads across client computers? or even a forum that you don't use a website to get to but use ssh? can you display images over ssh?

I have used ssh chans before btut they were text only terminal based.

imagine being able to ssh into a forum, it opens a window that resembles what we have on here, and every image you post is hosted by you, then is viewed and hosted by people who viewed it.

You know this has always shit me. 4Chan did run on Cloudflare. It's been stated over and over, "the $200 per month cloudflare plan won't cater to those kinds of traffic, in fact it's very expensive at that level".

Look at their fucking website. Compare the "Enterprise, request a quote" with "business, $200" plans.

It talks about SLAs and phone support. Nowhere does it talk about traffic limits.

Surprise "lol, we can't handle that" is BS.
>>
>>57287256
retard. 4chan cost 80k per month to run
>>
>>57287440
The problem with this strategy is that it won't necessarily increase traffic. It'll just concentrate the same amount of data on a smaller number of boards.

IMO, we should ban all frequent /pol/posters until after the election, at which point they will have calmed down considerably.
>>
>>57287461

When you open up a board, the board has to send you all the data for what's stored.

Let's say I browse pol and biz, I keep both boards up in separate tabs and refresh them regularly, the board has to send me biz's info constantly even though its not updating.

If you combined like interests, users will update multiple boards less frequently and you don't have to waste space on another 150 threads.

4chan 'culture' used to be about accepting its transientness, it wouldn't hurt to push that back into the picture a bit.

4chan currently runs on 7 MySQL servers, 13 nginx instances and 17 storage boxes. The numbers are prime for easy load balancing.

I wonder if any of the devs or sysadmins have bothered checking if the IO problems cloudflare was introduced to solve could outweigh the extra CPU load dupe checking across all boards rather than just one. Its a potential sweetspot that could make cloudflare less of a necessity. That said 4chan is bigger than when cloudflare was introduced and network speeds could be even more of a bottleneck than they were then. Still, it could lessen the load on cloudflare and drive whatever they charge down a bit

That's because it was running on an ancient textboard script that hadn't been touched in years, and mvb incorrectly assumed that better already existing FOSS alternatives would perform poorly because they (Kareha namely) were old school CGI scripts. The thing is wrappers exist that can make CGI scripts persist in memory and they're essentially drop in replacements that require zero dev effort i.e. it just werks

J-list was a good ads for this site back then until most of the weebs became minority so they finally leave and /pol/ are full of normalfag and no companny would want put a normal ads on a site that known to allowed a cartoon CP to be posted on their main board.

Reddit also got ads but most of their high bandwidth shit got cut by using third party site, meanwhile in here you will be called retarded for using other image upload services or having imgur filename on your post.

If I had to guess, I think this guys approach of thinking is that he believes the transmission system to be similar to that of a radio broadcast system where the server is either transmitting or not transmitting at all. In a radio transmission system more receivers (within a certain local contained area) has no impact at all on the transmission system. This is only a guess though as to his thought process.

One day: 90 TB cached + 25 TB uncached
means that you are roughly responsible for the cost of 21.74% of the bandwidth

the calculation is a bit off
given an average of roughly 3PB you would be responsible for ~653TB

Caching can approximate the "broadcast" model, actually. Cloudflare handles the wildly varying number of "receivers", and only requests new pages from 4chan up to a certain maximum rate, allowing 4chan's server load to be somewhat independent of "receiver" count.

Except it's already been explained the main problem is traffic, not storage.
Merging boards would slightly reduce the storage used, but the traffic would be the same because the mergerd boards would just become faster.

I agree on removing porn boards.
There are countless other places where to find porn and big filesize takes its toll on traffic.

Also limiting filesizes and implementing some clientside image compression would help, since you can't expect everybody to be as responsible as /p/ that asks in the stiky that photos be resized to be 1000px on the long side.
Yes, /p/, the photo snobs, are good with 1000px.
We could have some clientside resize/compression script for image bigger than 1mb/2000px on the long side.
That would have a huge impact.

Moot moved the servers out of his basement in 2008.
The figures in the linked post refer to just a little while before selling to HIroshima, 7 years after having already moved to a serious server.
Do you think that the site has always had so much traffic? Like in 2003 when the average image weighted a couple of kilobytes?
Goddamn ingorant fools thinking they know something because they read a single screenshot.

Oh god, he really IS pulling the exact same "it's dying, give me money" shit he did on 2ch.

This infographic is accurate - and it's about the same amount of bandwidth 4chan has been using for years! It hasn't gone up noticeably at all. Actual costs are indeed probably around $10k-$15k/mo.

Caching changes could reduce that, as could smaller thumbnail encoding with, say, WebP (most of that is thumbnails), properly-configured HTTP/2 on the backend, and enforced HTTPS.

Be VERY careful with terms of service/laws where you are and where you host chans, because people post fucking whatever.

In particular, if you're a britfag and you want to host a board anything like /pol/ (and from reading up the thread, you do?), remember we have 'hate speech' laws in the UK so you should probably leave it to someone from another jurisdiction to run it.

Same goes for anything vaguely erotic, actually, as it's about to become a major fucking pain in the ass to run porn from the UK (or at least, more than it was).

Thank you, yes. I had thought of that and it is what I am most concerned about, I guess the main solutions to that are to post a message at the top of each page stating that the entire board is satire, and perhaps also a message telling people to obey UK law and to report all posts breaking it. I could host it in burgerstan but I'm not sure how affected customer service would be by that. It's probably worth it though.

All of this is just hypothetical, if 4chan does shut down I'd like to think that hiroshimoot could give us a weeks warning at least, which would be enough to quickly set up some kind of service.

You're welcome. I really can't give you specific legal advice, but as some general points, I *really* doubt that putting a message on the top of each page saying it's satire would help you much, if at all. Judges are human: they fucking know when you're taking the piss and it's not generally appreciated.

And you living/operating the site from one country, and hosting the site in another country, would mean the site would be subject to the laws of the other country AND yours. That's actually not a win.

I ran a chan before - I know what it's like. It wasn't TOO bad with the cosy, social, relaxed /ef/ board which was the main one on the chan I ran, but there are definitely risks from, say, the odd random cheese pizza spammer (which the legal advice I received said to permaban, hashban, expeditiously permanently delete, then report the IP to the Internet Watch Foundation, which is what I did).

There's no way in blue hell I'd have touched a board with a reputation like /pol/ without getting actual visits from the police in short order.

This is just a bad country to run a tech enterprise from, especially with the pound the way it is, Theresa May as PM, the proposed Digital Economy Bill and the Snooper's Charter.

There are already lots of other, smaller, chans, and a variety of software to host them with (of varying awfulness). If 4chan did shut down (and I actually don't think that's very likely, considering Hiro's background back on 2ch and the graphs he's posted), I think the outcome is that the other chans would suddenly absorb an absolute shitload of new traffic - probably not all in the same place, however. 8 would undoubtedly get quite a bit, but for example I think /g/ would gravitate towards lain.
>>
>>57293253
I think the best course of action would be then, if 4chan went down, to start a new forum but in a bulletin board format and make very clear that UK law will have to followed. If I make it clear that this is life raft of a certain part of 4chan until Notch/Cernovich/Schkreli or whoever buys it and sorts it out, and that it is not the same old ship.

It will just end up like the Pomf scenario, with a slight difference: these sites already existed whereas most pomf clones never.

Some will die, most likely, but some won't, and that is what counts.
Servers are cheap, the bandwidth is the issue.
And given the community will be fractured, they'll likely stay with what they find that has a comfy reply rate. (rather than 4chan fast, ironically enough, not the rule though, but a large percentage will go for mid-tier response times)

Honestly, all Hiroyuki needs to do is kill the bandwidth hogs and replace them with textboards with OP-only images.
Add embed support for sites that support them.
Most bandwidth-heavy boards are ones where the content is already hosted OFF-site in a far better system than 4chan is.
Porn, manga, hentai, webms, all out there and better tagged.
Making a webm for /wsg/ is objectively more complicated than making a Youtube account. So that wouldn't be a barrier for text-board /wsg/.
Manga and hentai are all out there and well-tagged. /c/, /u/, /y/ and the others likewise on 'boorus and similar sites.

Why would this be better? Because it would instantly cut down the fucking sauce-faggotry and arguments over spoonfeeding because the content WOULD be the source.

The only threads "hurt" in this are draw-threads on various boards, but they can easily use /i/ like many of us do already.
We can't post NSFW drawings in /a/, /v/ and others, we already use /i/ for that.

Making /pol/ text-board would just be funny.

Why can't we go back to the good old days when only thread starters had images.
