Since I can't change the color of chromes url bar without going full-retard highcontrast mode... Is there a software that adds a brightness filter in a selected area?

Imagine drawing a box on the screen and then that box has less brightness.
Like slapping on a black .png with a 50% transparency anywhere.

I have a load of DVDs (I know) and I'd like to rip them and throw them away. I'm using Fedora. I've seen lots of tutorials around but all seem to install libchinkdvd or libnotabotnet from somewhere. I just want to rip the whole dvd, could be with or without titles etc. I'm not looking for compression or anything, I just want film.mkv to manipulate myself later. What's the best way to do this?

For some reason though, whenever I restart or shut down and power on the computer, it boots directly into BIOS/UEFI, where the boot priority list only shows my HDD. If I hit "save & exit," it then exits the BIOS/UEFI and boots normally. In short, uh... what?

Been thinking about getting a boot drive for my desktop, can't decide if I should get an 240GB ssd or a 500GB/1TB sshd for around the same price. Would the sshd boot times be similar or noticeably slower? And would the size of the sshd be worth it?

Don't buy SSHD's, they're junk. Go for proper SSD for OS and programs and a HDD for storage. If you can't afford both right now then buy SSD now and add a HDD later.

Question on MS certs.

I have 1 MTA done in security fundamentals. I would like to take another in networking fundamentals as well.

After that, I want to go towards an MCSA and then an MCSE further down. I'm confused on the hierarchy to receiving an MCSA certification.

Would the 2 MTAs go towards receiving an MCSA or would I need to take an extra MCSA-level exam? I read somewhere that 1 MTA counts as one of the 4 MCSA-level exams required to receiving an MCSA.

A lot of different sites have given a lot of different answers and Microsoft doesn't have a clear path listed on their website.

Also don't take money into consideration, I got that shit down pat.

There's a few settings that can be changed by default, but if you want full non-telemetry, I used this website:

Hope this helps.

>>57281227
I'm pretty sure my 2 MTAs wont go towards MCSA but I just wanna make sure.
>>
>>57281296
Because you literally can't entirely remove botnet.
You can disable lots of settings but in the end there's still shit that runs that you can't turn off and shit that runs and connects to the internet that you don't even know about.

>>
>>57281312
>>57281323
Should've been more clear.

Full non-telemetry is for all voluntary info-sending to M$. Stuff like Cortana will be unavailable without the info sending. You can completely disable her through PowerShell and other default apps but be careful, PS is a VERY powerful tool.

>>57281341
Yoga series are a bit too overkill for just Arch. The old T-series thinkpads are cheap and are good for Arch.

If you plan on dual booting, then lenovo wouldn't be the best bet. Newer Yoga laptops are expensive for that bending gimmick only, t. a Yoga 2 owner.

>>57281413
Yoga 2 Pro 13 is honestly an all-around amazing laptop, bar the $1400 MSRP from about 2-3 years ago. It's my work laptop so it has Windows 10 on it and I disabled most startup shit like Onedrive and Windows Defender and it boots incredibly fast on an SSD. I don't use Arch so I don't know how the touchscreen drivers will be added (or if it can at all) or the auto-detect of the laptop turning into a tablet.

It's light, durable, battery isn't that hard to replace and is cheap to buy, looks pretty neat too. I'd recommend to someone who has the money.

Only regret is not getting the 11" version, but that's entirely a personal preference.
>>
>>57281466
Yes, but don't plan on storing a ton of movies or on it. You're gonna have about 50gb to use in the end.

I used memtest on a usb stick and booted of that to get that pic.

So what's the indicator that the money is confirmed and cannot be cancelled then?
If I see "X has sent you Y money!" and i see the balance in my PayPal, that's not enough?
>>
>>57281846
Try mix matching the hardware.

i.e. if there's 2 sticks of ram try only booting from 1 or the other or use other ram, swap out other hardware (except power supply) and that'll tell you which component is the culprit.

Another option is doing a fresh install of windows but that wont determine which part is fucked.

Tedious but it'll save money and future headaches.

>>57281874
Seeing balance in your Paypal meant the transaction went through. There is a bit of delay between sending money and other person getting it, a long enough delay to cancel your balance transfer.

Is this a sign of a bad solid state HD?

I built a computer back in May with 2 solid state hard drives. I work from home so the intent was to install windows 7 on one for work, and install windows 10 on the other for leisure. I quickly got tried of switching so I wound up running everything on the Windows 10 HD. After about 2 months, the pc would start freezing forcing a hard restart, infrequent at first, and then more over time. I noticed that I could play between 5 to 20 min of Overwatch before a freeze occured while if I was browing the internet it was random when it would happen if at all. I came up with and tested a dozen solutions. One would work for a week, before it would start freezing again, I'd try it again and it wouldn't help at all. I'd try another and it would work for a couple of days, try it again, no help, etc. For my job, I have to create a seperate windows profile and sign in to it. While signed in to that profile, not once did it ever freeze. Even with chrome open the entire time.

Sick of this I started switching installs, win10 for work, win7 for play. For a few more months, everything worked fine. And then it started happening again on Windows 7. I ran through the same solutions, as well a half dozen more to no avail. I recently tried switching back to windows 10 and doing the built in reinstall thing they have, and no change. I've started leaving the Task Manager open, and I've noticed, usually when I've got Chrome open, that the disk usage on C: keeps hitting 100% and staying there for a minute or so. During that time, I can move my mouse around, my music player keeps playing, but clicking on most anything does nothing until the activity drops back down.

What I think it happening is that if that spike happens while a game or video is playing, rather than just locking up, it causes it to completely freeze, as I have never noticed one of these lock ups happen while playing or streaming, only freezing. Is this fixable?

Try clearing cache and launching the app again, it should add all boards by default. To add a board you should just enter the board code or name, example "g" would be /g/. Boards should automatically pop-up when you enter a letter they contain, so if you start typing "technology" as soon as you enter "t" /g/, /t/, /tg/, /tv/ etc. will pop-up and be selectable. If it still doesn't work try adding them directly in settings
>settings > boards > +
Make sure you're running the latest version, or at least 2.2.0 (I use this and it works).

This is weird. I'm also using the latest one available on F-droid, resetting the app added all boards on mine (there were over 70 I think). I swiped some boards away and tried adding them again, everything works on my end. No idea what could be the problem, try an older version and see if that works.
If an older version works know that you can upgrade after you've added the boards you want without losing any data (current watched threads, boards, theme, settings).
>>
>>57284263
It should work normally. There's no animation to confirm that you've refreshed the thread, but if there are new posts they will be shown. "it doesn't make an animation" doesn't equate to "it does nothing", try it on a popular thread you'll see everything's fine.

I'll be as specific as I can.

I re-installed Windows 7 on my PC, just a fresh install to clear out the clutter I was too lazy to pick through.

I formatted my HDD (my D drive), and then re-installed on my SSD which is my C drive.

I tried to play some vidya from my D drive after the install was finished but couldn't, because of some access violation or other. I didn't look into that since it was a known issue with that game and I couldn't find a solution.

But then I downloaded this:
https://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=864314

And got pic related in my D: drive destination. Even the subfolder is rolled into this mess.

Hmm, while I was waiting for it to download again, it seems it only fucked up because I edited the destination Folder, maybe it's a problem with uTorrent and not my drive. The left file I just downloaded without changing the destination folder name, the right is the file I was referring to before. That's all I did different.

I know /g/ isn't tech support but I have to try to sterilize my computer on my own (nephew has it in full blown AIDS mode) and just looking for someone that knows a thing or two about malware. Main problem is windows explorer being blocked by a fake Microsoft message informing me to call tech support along with a huge popup with a similar message. This goes away when I end 'Infos' in task manager. Can't find a thing on the whole internet about that program.

In addition, my defender keeps picking up browsermodifier-heazycrome (some variation) and it does appear to be a very new problem. I'm not having ad problems on my webpages or browser redirects (was having speed problems but it's getting back to normal) even though that's all I can find about this particular threat. I wonder if it has anything to do with that 'Infos' program.

Anyways, if I had to spend money for a professional, is it even possible to get rid of it without a factory restore? Because obviously I can do that myself.

run in this order, all of this google with the word "bleeping" as they are easily downloadable from bleepingcomputer.com

1. tdsskiller - basic rootkit finder
2. rkill - stop potential malware processes
3. ccleaner- to clean shit so temps are not wasting time being scanned
4. malwarebytes free - basic malware scan
5. eset online scanner, run as administrator
6. adwcleaner - excelent malware removal
7. JRT
8. RogueKiller
9. HitmanPro

after adwcleaner they are option, eset is also not always needed
most important are malwarebytes scan with updated database and adwcleaner

afterwards I check with autoruns.exe from sysinternals to see what starts on boot and whats scheduled and shit.. very handy, run as admin

Hey /g/

long time listener, first time caller.

I am a teacher working abroad and bough a decent rig but it's in the language of the country I'm in, after some research I found out the OS is a Win10 single language, tried manually installing language packs but have not been successful.

any ideas to help change my interface language to English?
>>
>>57293149
>boot into Linux using a USB/DVD/Android
>plug in a backup external HDD or other storage
>back up your files from the main disk
>kill Windows, wipe the HDD containing it
>reboot
>make a clean install of your OS
>recover your backups
The above is a last resort and does include a "factory restore" since you'd be reinstalling the OS. But it's a more safe approach if you're facing more modern malware.

Alternatively, you could use another PC to manually scan your current HDD for malware using malwarebytes or similar software, or just use a live anti-malware and rescue disc. This is what 99% "professionals" do anyway.

Not either of them, but the way it was explained to me when I asked a long-ass time ago was the lower ones have a much lower write number than the higher ones. Like they're missing a few zeroes. I never cared to verify if that was true or not, so I could be wrong.
>>
>>57297282
Kind of memory used on them, also other things irrelevant to what is he talking about.

SSDs have a limited amount of writes, TLC being the cheapest and with the least amount of writes (Usually seen in $38-50 SSDs).

3D NAND(3D TLC and MLC), MLC and SLC support more writes, up to a point they will last you years even if you stress test them nonstop.
Meanwhile TLC will last you 1-2 years with some heavy write use.

this hasn't been true since the 840 Pro series, much less the 850s. At this point it's almost entirely negligible as far as normal wear and tear users, you'd have to stress test almost constantly to kill them.

"Other things" are just gimmicks or tricks to make the SSDs cheaper.

Just look at the SP550 speed for example, once you write 2GB of stuff the SLC cache it uses fills and the speed dies.
But its a $38 GB SSD, you cant complain.

check the wiring on the center channel, make sure nothing is loose and the wires aren't in the wrong plugs

there should be a self test mode that will send a tone from the receiver to each speaker channel, that will tell you whether the channel works or not at least

if the center channel doesn't work you should be able to disable it in the receiver and have it play the center channel through left/right instead

dialogue usually goes through center which is why you're not hearing it

UPDATE: My laptop saw the shared drives but asked for a username and password for no apparent reason. Kodi still doesn't see the drives on my chinky tablets, yet they're visible in Windows. wtf lads.

when SSDs fail they just become read-only, or become unreadable entirely. I'd expect what you're experience to be tied to either a bad driver, corrupt windows install, or overheating issue. also possibly bad/mismatched RAM modules.

get speedfan and prime95 for stress testing

temporarily disabling the firewall for public networks will make it significantly easier, rather than dealing with permissions for unknown networks
open a command line, and get the IP address of the win7 machine
from the win10 machine, WIN+R and open \\ip.of.other.pc\c$ which should prompt for credentials
copy/move as normal

I only suggest using the win10 machine to open connection to win7 because win10 doesn't allow the hidden roots without a pain in the ass workaround.

Comp Sci student here. I've only done 1.5 years of java so far. Thinking of trying some game dev, just for fun and experience; I don't really expect much at this point. Ideally, I'd like to make a CS-like fps. Really fed up with CSGO and there aren't any alternatives. I've always thought CSGO would be a much better game if it had competition. Not saying I'd be that, but I suppose if I'm gonna do this, it should be something I have a clear vision of what I want to do. I pretty much just want to make something that would be the Dota 2 or Heroes of the Storm to LoL, in terms of CSGO.
1. What are my options for engines? I only know of Unreal Engine 4 and Source.
2. Anyone have the pros and cons to different engines?
3. Are they all in C++ or are there any in Java?
4. Do I actually need to be a good coder or just proficient? I have no idea how hard it is.
5. If I were to learn C++, should I just get a book pdf from the /g/ info dump torrent? Any tips other than a book? I took classes at uni for java. Any recs for books?

Asked this in a different thread but might as well post here.

This is my 5-6 year old build. I'm planning on upgrading my GPU to a GTX 1060 but I have concerns on whether my CPU will bottleneck it. Really want to do this, maybe buy some more RAM and a SSD to make this build last a couple more years.

What's a good RJ45 CAT5e connector that I can find on Amazon? Most of these have bad reviews that freak me out a little.

Seriously, I bought a cheap bag of connectors from Radio Shack and none of them were bad. Now I'm out of them and RS is gone.

I just want to get a bag of like 50 or 100. Suggestions appreciated.

you have a fx-8350 if we look for a current equivalent performance-wise. It won't bottleneck but it's definitely not future proof, so consider a CPU upgrade right after getting that 1060.

How the fuck do I disable this? The only thing I've been able to find is people suggesting to disable addons or to check for software you don't remember installing. None of that changed anything though.

what happened:

Puppy is around 300MB on a live CD/USB and 512MB if you install it.

Windows XP fits a CD and usually takes up less than 2GB space.

I wanna build a homelab for learning purposes because at work we are pretty much stuck technology wise.

I thought about using esxi to host the VMs. I want some kind of managmentserver that hosts a git repo, puppet or any other configmanagment software, and realtime and trendmonitoring for the other servers. Since I kinda wanna make use of the servers I want at least 1 backup server and 1 mediastreaming server, maybe one webserver so that I can fiddle around with tomcat a bit and a windows machine.

Any ideas what kind of hardware I need for that? Initially I thought about getting a hp microserver g8 because the formfactor is pretty neat but I would still have to throw a lot of money at it and it really limits me in terms of what hardware I can use (35W CPU, ECC unreg. RAM,...).

What do you guys think? Strong 4core CPU, 32?GB ram for futureproofing. What features are important for the cpu? I've read about passthrough stuff for virtualization does this matter for my lab?

Go to settings and change your search engines. Change the default one. Or just click "restore to default" to reset the settings to default as they are when you install Firefox. If it still doesn't work you should go to about:config and look for " keyword.url" change it to whatever provider you want (probably "http://www.google.com/").
The last resort is just reinstalling your browser, or your OS because this looks a lot like something malware would do.

>>
>>57306271
reactos is aiming to be bug-compatible (that is, it will implement anything windows does, even if it's buggy behaviour, provided windows software depends on that behaviour) with (currently) windows 2003 (similar to XP)

so yes, reactos being vulnerable to windows 2003 malware is intended behaviour, if undesirable

if you use an AV on windows, you should also use an AV on reactos
