Back up all my images.

Other than that I don't keep precious data on my PC that I don't also have a paper copy of, for this reason.

So, two hours rolls along and I re-install my OS, drivers, programs and games.

I did this once a year back. Only back up things I'd be heart broken to lose.

Only used about 200MB, and only about 5 files were newer than 2010.

The kind of things people keep in scrapbooks and albums.

A similar idea is to copy everything on a separate HD, then only copy back on the "main" HD things that you are wanting to use.

every piece of data including:
- other storage(other usb stick, dvds, cds, sd cards, phone storage, cloud)?
- can I download again non personal shit as software, movies and music?

The answer could be really different depending on your answer.

This actually happened to me, minus the part where you have 2 hours to react.

Both my hard drive and backup drive failed within 72 hours of each other, leaving me holding my dick in my hands.

I lost like $500 in bitcoin, any projects that I hadn't uploaded to github, and of course years of schoolwork, saved images and notes.

ave my best projects (programming, grad thesis, etc)
Save my txts with my poems ad short stories.
Save my important documents (receipts for car insurance and other burocratic stuff).
Keepass portable and the passwords db.
Luckily it's mostly small stuff, I should still have at least 20 gb to use for my most important pictures.

Take my OS licence on a notepad.
Save Ableton/Reason projects, and my created samples.

Speaking of failure, I just turned on my computer for the first time in five days and suddenly it took forever to finally scan and open my storage drive which I would cautiously interpret as an early warning of eventual failure.

I still have an identical model lying around empty because originally I intended to start a RAID 1 but I never did. What's the best way of copying the contents of the old drive to the new one?

If the drives are of identical size

dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/sdy

Then check the md5sum of both volumes to make sure it copied correctly

cat /dev/sdx | md5sum

and do the same thing for sdy, then compare the hashes

I would compress all my photos so that they fit on the drive, that's feasible if I save them at a lower res. My drive docs are no more than 5gb so that's not a problem.

Everything else is not my data, the OS is not mine, the code I've written is either the property of some company or open source, neither is what I would consider my property.

I have basically no need to save anything. The only data on my PC I'll miss is my gigantic collection of loli yuri, but 32GB isn't going to put a dent in that without some magical super compression.
