Someone hands you a 32GB USB stick and tells you that in 2 hours you will lose every piece of data you have that isn't on this stick. What do you save?

Note: this includes the OS, so put some space aside for that ISO.
>>
this is the dumbest thought experiment i've seen in months
>>

this
its dumb on so many levels i cant even begin to explain

Back up all my images.

Other than that I don't keep precious data on my PC that I don't also have a paper copy of, for this reason.

So, two hours rolls along and I re-install my OS, drivers, programs and games.

Sage
>>
>>57277240
nothing to hide, nothing to fear
ill just save a copy of windows install and utorrent and reinstall windows, download chrome, and download all my steam games
>>
$ dd if=/dev/urandom of=/mnt/usb1/porn.zip bs=1024M count=32
>>
I'll just save a compressed copy of more disk space, then mount that copy as a partition and save all my data to it.
>>
Tell them to fuck off. You have to be fucking stupid to plug in some USB storage device handed to you by a complete stranger.
>>
I did this once a year back. Only back up things I'd be heart broken to lose.

Only used about 200MB, and only about 5 files were newer than 2010.

That was depressing, I'll tell you that for free.
>>
>>57277360

>Only back up things I'd be heart broken to lose.

This is alien to me. Rare porn or what? Do you abuse children and film them? If that's the case then there's no need to incriminate yourself, just don't reply and I'll know.
>>
>>57277480
Digital pictures of family and friends. Chatlogs back from school days. A bunch of text files about articles and essays I still like reading. Some shitty WAV files from my college band that sucked.

The kind of things people keep in scrapbooks and albums.
>>
A similar idea is to copy everything on a separate HD, then only copy back on the "main" HD things that you are wanting to use.
>>
>>57277515
this. For me, I rarely look at chatlogs, but I love having them.
>>
>>57277240
How about I just don't plug in a usb stick from a stranger that is obviously trying to infect my machine with some shit that is going to wipe all my data in 2 hours

Code is on gitlab, passwords and kinky nudes are on an encrypted container on Drive, photos are backed on a different computer.
I'd just backup my work folder and some uni projects.

Gotta embrace that botnet, anon.
>>
>>57277480
Not him, but I back up my old selfmade demoscene tunes on every HDD and USB stick I have. There's a backup DVD around somewhere, too.

They're only like 300 MB in a single .rar file, so it's not a big deal, but it would be super fucked up if I lost them.
>>
>>57277737
how else would he know for sure that my data is going to get wiped?
>>
I'll just put everything in a zip and then I'll zip the zip and keep zipping it until it's so small it fits lol
>>
>>57277756
OP didn't say cloud or off-site storage was safe.

>>57277762
Because that's the fucking point of the thought experiment, and the lesson of it.

I've got some old photos and files on about 5 placed, including discs.

Why? If it's the apocalypse, that OS isn't gonna be of any use. If it's not, why do I need an extra copy of my OS?

Though I'm fine anyway.
>>
Let's be clear:
every piece of data including:
- other storage(other usb stick, dvds, cds, sd cards, phone storage, cloud)?
- can I download again non personal shit as software, movies and music?

The answer could be really different depending on your answer.
>>
This actually happened to me, minus the part where you have 2 hours to react.

Both my hard drive and backup drive failed within 72 hours of each other, leaving me holding my dick in my hands.

I lost like $500 in bitcoin, any projects that I hadn't uploaded to github, and of course years of schoolwork, saved images and notes.

Shit sucks bro
>>
>>57278098
I'd imagine anything that could be considered "yours" vanishes, no matter what the location or state is. This doesn't have much of a point otherwise.

And I think re-downloading should be an option. since (to me) the point of this thought experiment is whether you have actually backed up the important things enough.

or have the internet through a mobile phone and only have 1 gb per £10 or 12.14 US Dollars ?
>>
>>57278194
Ok, well then:
ave my best projects (programming, grad thesis, etc)
Save my txts with my poems ad short stories.
Save my important documents (receipts for car insurance and other burocratic stuff).
Keepass portable and the passwords db.
Luckily it's mostly small stuff, I should still have at least 20 gb to use for my most important pictures.

There, done.

Speaking of failure, I just turned on my computer for the first time in five days and suddenly it took forever to finally scan and open my storage drive which I would cautiously interpret as an early warning of eventual failure.

I still have an identical model lying around empty because originally I intended to start a RAID 1 but I never did. What's the best way of copying the contents of the old drive to the new one?

If the drives are of identical size
dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/sdy

Then check the md5sum of both volumes to make sure it copied correctly
cat /dev/sdx | md5sum

and do the same thing for sdy, then compare the hashes

assuming my data means my personal data that only I have access to, including cloud storage.

I would compress all my photos so that they fit on the drive, that's feasible if I save them at a lower res. My drive docs are no more than 5gb so that's not a problem.

Everything else is not my data, the OS is not mine, the code I've written is either the property of some company or open source, neither is what I would consider my property.
>>
I have basically no need to save anything. The only data on my PC I'll miss is my gigantic collection of loli yuri, but 32GB isn't going to put a dent in that without some magical super compression.
