First for Debian:
1. Respects your freedom first and foremost.
2. Allows you to knowingly opt-in to non-free software if you want/need it.
3. Stable by default.
4. Allows you to knowingly opt-in to a rolling release, if you want/need it.
5. Decisions are made by the community instead of a single entity.
6. One of the eldest and most influential distros to this day. It has staying power.

Fedora is bad:
- Fedora mandatorily comes with proprietary firmware, despite being in support of free software
- Requires using 3rd party repositories for non-free software (outside of the firmware, obvi)
- 6 month release cycle. Requires a huge update every 6 months in order to stay up-to-date. Also making such major updates is more likely to break your system, opposed to the incremental updates of a rolling-release.

I don't really see the issue with the 6-mo release cycle. The two last releases are supported, so if you don't like going through the upgrade, you can do it once a year. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I didn't have anything break when updating and I've been doing that since F16.

I legit think Debian is the best overall OS, due to the things I listed. What other distro has the best overall attributes to be so versatile? I'm not getting paid or in cahoots with anyone, and unfortunately the claim that I'm a shill is unfalsifiable, so you have to take my word. :|

Alright, I'll admit I haven't used Fedora extensively enough to know how reliable its updates are, so I admit I was wrong about 6 month release cycle as a negative. I was unfairly shitting on Fedora in that regard, but it still has a weirdly compromised free software policy.

So I like trying new things, one of those lately was Ubuntu Minimal, booted and installed without a problem. Except it won't boot after installation, total black screen nothing at all.

Some browsing says to see if I can press shift key and have GRUB menu show up and try to run under "recovery" and I am presented with a login and it logs in successfully, thought it would be something to do with the systemd but it outputs that it failed due to user not existing(don't have exact error message now) So what do I do to fix it?

As someone who considers switching from Arch to Debian, are user repos really as easy to install as you describe it? I just want to compile something and all its dependencies or remove it recursively with a simple command. Is that possible on Debian?
>>
>>57270173
I suppose it's possible I haven't set up the tftpd properly. I set my laptop with a static IP and access U-boot on the router over serial and run the tftpboot command but the image isn't sent. I'm following these directions: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=232750#p232750

>>57270386
I think that was related to the whole desktop experience, using vt_handoff or something Ubuntu specific. You can remove it from the GRUB default params and update your GRUB. But then again, it should continue to boot normally into the login manager after you install that. It'll just show a black screen until then.
>>
>>57270720
yes but I assume there's not everything I want available with apt. that's where user repos come in and my question was how easy they are to manage on Debian. I don't really want to fiddle around with my OS, I just want to get stuff done.

Conundrum bois.

I have an old laptop without Lubuntu as my only computer for a while.

It can't access the internet. But I have a phone that can access the internet so I can ship stuff to the laptop via USB.

Now the laptop has SoundKonverter installed so I want to use it to transcode some music, but SoundKonverter itself is just a front-end. How can I go about getting the latest version of Opus onto the laptop, without just doing
apt install opus
? Since the laptop can't directly access the internet.

Thanks brahs.

The Linux installation on the laptop seems to be irrecoverably buggered so it can't access any network at all, wifi/Ethernet/USB included. I'm on limited data ATM so I can't afford to download a new Linux ISO to do a fresh install either.

>you'll have to download the .deb

Yeah that's the problem, I can't find such a thing. There's pre compiled Windows executables for opusenc but seemingly the only way to install it on Linux is via ppa. Maybe I can ask someone on lebbit to compile it into an offline installable package for me.

so I'm thinking about installing debian onto my desktop. I've been reading the sticky, both for reccomended stuffs and ricing. one of the external resources, z3bra's blog, says to "cleaned the whole setup, installed X.org, xterm and vim..."
So I've been trying to find a list of recommended steps to clean the setup after a new instal, much like I would after a fresh instal of win7, but I've not been having much like. Most of what I've been coming across is just regular instaltion steps- nothing on tweaks and cleanup post instal- or the cleaning up of a system that's been running a while, and has old files/junk config files hanging around. Do you have any suggestions? I'm new to using linux.

I use the tty a lot (I wouldn't even have xorg installed if I didn't need a full featured browser to run some shitty javascript, post on 4chan and whatnot) and it would be convenient to have volume keybinds to control alsamixer when I'm listening music or watching my animus.

Hi black linux person,

I've been searching for over an hour on how to fix this simple issue yet it's frustrating because everywhere I go the "answer" is to resize windows by some other more complicated or slower method than grabbing the border, yet that's not what I want to do. I just simply want to be able to double tap and drag the edge of a window to be able to resize it. Somebody extremely autistic created 1 pixel window border on xfce. Please help me black linux man.

What if Free Software is made only for corporations to use it in their proprietary, closed software and nobody is able actually to detect it happened?
What if it's just a scheme to use hackers and their abilities for corporation interest?
What if RMS actually trolled us all and earned a lot of $$$ by this propaganda from the corporations?
I remember that FSF or GNU website had a list of sponsors once and there were corporations like Google, Oracle etc.
What if hackers are tools and are used by corporations?

You said it would be undetectable, it's not. It would also not be worth the risk, it would not be easy because you would have to maintain this obfuscated "fork" of the software you're stealing and there's also very little reason to do so because most free software has a closed source alternative or other free software with permissive licenses. Prove that it's possible to verify that a slightly modified free software is turned into proprietary program without using human witnesses. It's not even necessary to "obfuscate" the code since it's not published. Maintaining a bit modified open source program shouldn't be a problem.

You get a binary based on slightly modified source and what then?
You may as well shit yourself, because there's nothing you can do to prove it's based on open source program and that is a very, very sad fact.

You have no idea what you're talking about, do you know anything about software forensics? You would compare the compiled code, compare the system calls, there's people that do this for a living, that's how most exploits are found by looking at how the software behaves not from the source code.

>modifying the source in a few places and passing different compilation flags results in a completely different binary

You can do this for small things, doing this to something like the Linux kernel for example would be a near impossible task, it would require thousands of people working on it constantly. The point is that you can only do this for small, irrelevant software. Anything big would require a huge effort that would not be worth it.
>>
>>57273522
do

>>
>>57273562
Not really true, since you can write a script that reorders the code based on some simple rules, replaces some strings and variables automatically and then pass a different compilation flag. I don't see it as anything impossible to do.
>>
>>57273580
>since you can write a script that reorders the code based on some simple rules, replaces some strings and variables automatically and then pass a different compilation flag.

Linux has million of lines of code, full of bugs and special-cases designed to work in a completely different environment. Yeah, you could just write a script that does that, sure. Not to mention you would have to keep up with development, Linux has tens of thousands of commits per month. I will repeat, this would be near impossible to do with anything of relevance.
>>
>>57273634
You may used a reduced Linux kernel and you don't have to maintain it and I think that simple modifications based on script wouldn't be that much hassle. Maybe maintaining it. For example, if someone didn't leak the information, until this day we wouldn't probably know that PS4 OS is based on FreeBSD. This happens and this is a perfect example, only Sony didn't try hard enough to hide it.
>>
>>57273634
Take for example this:

https://github.com/kaldi-asr/kaldi

I can see someone taking this code, modifying it automatically using some scripts and refactorization tools, passing different compile options and maybe using a different compiler and releasing that as their "product". There is much application potential for speech recognition and nobody would know that it happened, the binaries will be different and the team will keep silent about this fact.
>>
This is a real problem for free software and I would be very interested in seeing someone try to solve it. We should care about where the open source programs are used and if their licence is violated or not, this is rather important.
>>
>>57273634
Maintaining a patch set isn't hard, patch is pretty smart and can use fuzzy logic if the LOC are off by small changes.
>>
>>57273654
What? Sony didn't try to hide anything and BSD has a permissive license so it doesn't matter. Also what you said about "replacing some strings and variables" would still not change the system calls, in fact, it would do absolutely nothing to hide what the program is actually doing. Seriously research this topic a bit more and you'll find how absolutely ridiculous what you're saying is.

Just think about the effort it requires and what you get. Imagine Microsoft wanted to use bash as the Windows shell for some reason, now bash isn't even that big compared to some other things but even so, they would have to fork the bash code, rewrite most of the interactions with the underlying OS because bash wasn't written to work with Windows, then they would have to obfuscate all the system calls, this would require changing how the program actually works on a fundamental level and not just changing names around like you're implying, this could not be done by a "script", they would have to do all this IN SECRET and the end result would be a buggy piece of shit shell that barely works. Why would they do this exactly?

This was just an example of the fact that we wouldn't know if someone didn't say it.

>Also what you said about "replacing some strings and variables" would still not change the system calls
System calls are not the most important in the software development, you have a set of various, sometimes very complicated algorithms that are actually the added value. It's obvious that programs will use system calls in the same way.

>Seriously research this topic a bit more and you'll find how absolutely ridiculous what you're saying is.

>System calls are not the most important in the software development, you have a set of various, sometimes very complicated algorithms that are actually the added value. It's obvious that programs will use system calls in the same way.
Except if you were comparing software you would be looking at system call graphs which is aren't trivial to obfuscate, you prove again and again that you have no idea what you're talking about.

The rest of what you've said is just nonsense. The only companies that have resources to do this effectively have enough resources that they don't need to do this.

The bigger the thing you "steal" is the more people working on it and therefore the more likely it is that there will be whistleblowers. Not to mention most free software is years behind proprietary software for commercial purposes, there's very little things to even "steal", it's like saying Photoshop is stealing GIMP's code.

Basically, in some cases there is no benefit (Windows using bash) and in others the risk is greater than the reward. There are a bunch of companies using free software illegally and violating the GPL but implying it happens on some grand scale, where Windows was using the Linux kernel all this time without us knowing it is a joke.

All I want to do is automate a task like "go through this file, find this specific line, change it to this." But jebus you got me.

Then I might want to go further and be like "search for the directory where this file is, copy the file into that directory." But that's hard as fuck too cause you might get additional file paths after using locate.

What a bunch of buzzwords. There is only Ubuntu minimal. Depending which packages you install, it becomes "Ubuntu server". Also, "server" is a buzzword. You can install an FTP server package on your "desktop" computer and it's considered a server.

tl;dr: jus like on debian, you can choose which packages to install and the size depends on what you choose to install

A server install is headless, that's the main difference. A desktop install doesn't have an option to forgo the desktop manager.

Servers also come with openssh etc.

Sure the package makeup is all that's different but what else would you call it when you create two spins of a distro, one for running on servers and one for running on desktops?

Don't desktop ubuntu have it? Lol. Tb-h I never used desktop linux, only through terminal, either on screen (tty) or ssh (pts)

Thinking of installing GNU/Linux again, is it possible to go about doing this, have a tiny partition for Wangblow$, and prevent it from ever touching the Linux partitions?

>>

>Don't desktop ubuntu have it? Lol
Desktop Ubuntu has ssh of course but it doesn't have sshd. OpenSSH refers to the daemon package, I think the ssh client is in some other core package.

>>57278280
>prevent it from ever touching the Linux partitions
Windows won't touch the linux partitions because unless you install ext2 drivers, it can't even read them. It can read the partition table and knows that a partition is there though so it won't touch the partition at all. Installing Windows is the only dangerous time and if you do it manually then it's not too hard, just don't delete any partitions and ideally, preformat the windows partition so that windows doesn't have to do anything.

Windows always wants to fuck with the boot partition though, so make a backup or something.

Knowing what kernel version is running can help sometimes, there's a shitload of bugs related to updating a kernel and not having rebooted yet.

wow didn't know that, sshd is the very basic of my interaction with any linux, ssh client less because I use putty in windows

Yeah, mine too but it's easy to install. Lots of desktop Ubuntu installations don't need sshd because they only ssh outwards.

I think I did a mistake with eth0. During the install, ifconfig says ent0s25 or something like that, but it disappeared after the install.

I also want to change dhcpcd and use networkmanager, which just worked when I was using arch.

I will start ex nihilo tomorrow. What pitfall should I avoid? How to make sure to have the network working after the install?
>>
Guys, I'm really about to lose it..

Been trying to build a programm (https://github.com/nicehash/nheqminer) on Arch for hours and I still can't figure it out

cmake always spits out:
-- Looking for pthread.h
-- Looking for pthread.h - found
-- Looking for pthread_create
-- Looking for pthread_create - not found
-- Looking for pthread_create in pthreads
-- Looking for pthread_create in pthreads - not found
-- Looking for pthread_create in pthread
-- Looking for pthread_create in pthread - found

and because of that make spits out:
undefined reference to symbol 'pthread_rwlock_wrlock@@GLIBC_2.2.5'

I don't know how to get this pthread crap.. I couldn't find anything.
>>
>>57278810
Oh shoot, I used to have this problem and forgot what the hell caused it

Check your flags again and make sure threads are enabled as one of the build flags. use the flag "-pthread"
>>
>>57278843
>use the flag "-pthread"
I tried this already. I kind of have the feeling Arch is missing this "pthread" thingy or something.
>>
>>57278399

Yeah and you totally need it to have displayed all the time, for hours, days, weeks, months and years for those 2 seconds when you once need it. You totally can't just type "uname -a" into a terminal emulator. You NEED to have it displayed all the time.

Every non-game/computational GPU usage scenario can already make use of multiple GPU's. Expect maybe shitty encoding software.

Depending on you're type of package manager, you can get it to spit out a list of packages installed in a format that same package manager can read as input on a reinstall/fresh install of same distro.
