>>
I still can't believe they did this, God that little thing was one of the best thing about MacBooks. They literally had the best power inputs of any laptop by far. They got too much fucking 'courage' and axed it.
>>
The trade off is USB type-C and you can charge from any of the 4 ports instead of just a single port located on a single side.

You can also do passthrough and charge through the same connection you're connecting a monitor or any other peripherals through
>>
>>57267240
But can I charge from all four ports at the same time?
>>
Macbook Pro with optical drive also discontinued.
>>
>>57267271
I imagine it would detect that and only draw the needed/safe power.
>>
>>57267240

The reason I'm pissed is that there's nothing stopping them from having their fucking USB-C ports while also including MagSafe 2. The internals behind it and such are small enough to fit in that chassis easily. They just didn't fucking do it.
>>
>>57267304
I guess? There are magnetic breakaway USB type C cables if that's all you care about. There is no need for another connector.
>>
>>57267240
I don't care, that's a shit tradeoff.
>>
>>57267380
How is it a tradeoff? It offers identical features, it's reversible, there are magnetic breakaway options, and it provides data connection for monitors, speakers, hard drives, networking devices, etc, as well as power delivery.
>>
>>57267365
Those pieces of shit are not and never will be as good as MagSafe. There's no need for all of the connectors on the laptop to be the same. USB-C connector is fine for TB3, since it's smaller and reversible unlike the Mini-DP connector. MagSafe should have stayed.

Did they ax the card reader too?
>>
>>57266891
What is that even used for
>>
>>57267406
>Those pieces of shit are not and never will be as good as MagSafe
I can almost guarantee you've not tried a USB type C cable with magnetic breakaway.

>>57267436
You don't have to buy it if you don't want it.

If magnetic breakaway is so fucking important to your lifestyle that THIS is what makes or breaks the laptop for you, you have no hope of survival on this planet.
>>
indeed, rip. one of thier nicest technology.
>>
>>57267406

They axed the SD card slot AND HDMI.
>>

morons.
>>
>>57267481
USB type-C supports HDMI and Displayport. Hell pretty sure it supports VGA too.
>>
>>57267481
I'm ok with HDMI being axed, but the SD card slot? That's some bullshit.

What professionals want a thinner laptop with reduced connectivity and no real performance? They need to take a note from that HP Zbook.

>>
>>57267458
If you can't see that the magnetic USB-C breakaway cables you mentioned are far inferior to the original magsafe cable I don't even know how you function in society. How are you actually going to say it's as good as magsafe?
>>
>>57267458
how can you be this deluded? kill yourself.
>>
>>57267458

But you had it included in the previous models, and now if you want it back, you pay extra and considering the competition for good laptops at this price bracket it's pretty ridiculous to think people should. I see apple's profits dropping again for at least the next year.
>>
On the bright side, Apple will stop patent-trolling the "magnetic power connector" patent r-right? That means we'll start seeing magsafe on other laptops instead of those ancient barrel plugs.
>>
>>57267550
>>57267545
kek, butt mad autists.

Doubt you'd have been able to afford one of these anyway.

If a $20 cable is what is the deciding factor for you on a $2400 laptop, i'm willing to bet that isn't your primary issue with the laptop.
>>
I never really cared about MagSafe and now you can use whatever cable you want to instead of Apple's notoriously prone to fraying cables

>Apple has launched the first new version of its MacBook Pro laptop in 18 months with a new OLED touchscreen on the keyboard capable of inserting emoji into text.
>The new laptop does not come with the SD card reader, HDMI port, the two Thunderbolt ports that doubled as a mini DisplayPorts, or the two USB-A ports that the last model did, so will require adapters to use existing accessories. It also lacks the MagSafe power adapter, instead relying on USB-C. It does have a 3.5mm headphone socket, however.

Apple what the fuck are you guys doing? It's like you're deliberately trying to send your brand into the gutter now you got enough money to not need to worry about things any more. All this pandering to the "meme generation" with emoji keyboards and hundreds of dongles for "muh thinness" is making you look like tryhard microsoft trying to be cool and hip when they talk about minecraft.

If you have a USB type-c capable monitor you can plug the macbook into the monitor, then your peripherals into the monitor (the announced LG 5k monitor has 3 USB type-C port)

That way you can plug an adapter for VGA into the back of the monitor for your VGA display, another USB type-C port can be used for an ethernet adapter.

That way you can have a desktop setup, plug your macbook into a single USB type-C cable connected to the main monitor, and it will all just work as if it were plugged into a docking station.

If you have the $ to spend, you can get a much more seemless setup using USB type-C. It just costs a decent bit right now because all USB type-C devices are basically brand new products within the last year.

That's really the point, so if you trip over the cable, you don't pull the MB to the ground.
>>
>>57267632

I thought the whole point of the MacBook Pro vs the Air or original MacBook was to be professional oriented?

Why would the 'professional' consumer buy this pile of shit now instead of switching over to one of the several other workstation oriented laptops?

I was all hyped about the new MBP before I saw the leaked image of the gimmicky touchpad...

Can't wait to see what they do with the next Mac Pro...
>>
>>57268466

Pretty good, saved my laptop many a time in meetings when someone has tripped over the pile of cables.

Doubt I will be swapping my 2014 MacBook Pro now, probably get HP Elitebook or Dell XPS next.
>>
>>57268466
That is the point. It comes out with a sharp tug so people can't trip over your laptop charger and pull your laptop onto the floor. It's also really easy to connect since you can just put it near the port and it'll snap in.

ECC RAM
USB Type C TB3 ports

You misunderstand. Scott Forstall and Steve Jobs had similar temperaments. Forstall was known for being a major asshole because he pushed his team to deliver. He was a workaholic. He is an gifted programmer and lead developer. Jobs had taken Forstall from NeXT when Jobs returned to Apple because he recognized his work ethic and competence. He designed Aqua for MacOS. Once ousted from Apple, he became a successful producer for musicals.

Really, there's too much to list here and I can't be bothered. Ultimately, Forstall was seen as the successor to Jobs with his ballbusting adherence to Jobs' vision.

That's exactly cheaping out.
They didn't look for any way to implement suitable strain relief in a slim package. They just cut it and let the cables suffer.

i'm not buying a MBP this year (or next year, probably), and i have at least half a dozen magsafe chargers (one for travel, one at home, one at work, one near my bed in case i want to work on my bed, and probably a few more floating around). i'm still fine with them dropping magsafe.

the latest update means that 2016 MBP charger cables can be purchased from monoprice. are you people honestly going to cling to magsafe so much that you can't appreciate that?

>>57271158
i figure as long as they replace one standard for another i can live with it. i have adapters that won't work anymore, but type C means we'll be able to get ethernet adapters, generic cables, etc... relatively cheaply.

i will miss the escape key as well. maybe i'll get the 13 inch laptop (assuming they don't kill the non-touchbar option in a year or two).

>>57271164
anybody who shoots professionally will tell you that no camera does wireless transfer quickly enough for RAW files. the only part of your hallucination that's true is that in studio shoots people are more likely to use straight up ethernet cables. photographers all still use physical media.

>"The MacBook Pro's Touch Bar doesn't signal a future move into touchscreen Macs, something the Apple executives made clear. A Mac with a touchscreen isn't "particularly useful," Ive said, while Schiller said Apple investigated the possibility of converging iOS and Mac devices but decided against it."

>"We did spend a great deal of time looking at this a number of years ago and came to the conclusion that to make the best personal computer, you can't try to turn MacOS into an iPhone," Schiller says. "Conversely, you can't turn iOS into a Mac.... So each one is best at what they're meant to be -- and we take what makes sense to add from each, but without fundamentally changing them so they're compromised."

>Both Federighi and Schiller believe the laptop is a form factor that's going to be around for a long time. "As far as our eyes can see, there will still be a place for this basic laptop architecture," Schiller said, pointing out that it's been useful for the past 25 years.

that's unfortunate for you. in the ~4 years that i've had apple products i've never had someone trip over my cable - maybe it's because i spent the last ~22 years being conscious of where my cable is and warning people if they seem to be walking by not paying attention - but the outcome is the same. i didn't benefit measurably from magsafe's quick release feature.

i'm pretty sure i'll benefit from my laptop cable (and AC adapter) being much cheaper to get. and USB battery packs potentially working (i don't know of any that can top up a laptop, but now that it's all on USB it's likely a matter of time)

i agree that it'll be nice to see the option for consumers to add a breakaway thing, but again i'm just not in demand for it. i'll need to replace like 5 magsafe adapters all over my home and office, but replacing them with Anker power bank things will be nice, and replacing those cables with usb cables will be really nice.

Everything over USB is the future for I/O. You're acting like this is disruptive, but at worst it's premature. Apple has done this a lot, though. The MBA was ridiculed for dropping an optical drive way before anyone felt it was appropriate.

The argument that they're removing things from the product is stupid. At worst you can argue that they're hastily rushing us toward the consolidation of all wired I/O activity being handled by USB Type C. But if you're buying a laptop with an eye toward the next 2 or 3 years, then this is the least painful option.

Apple hasn't ever supported legacy users. If you're upset about this, I honestly don't know what to say. This is like bitching that the sun gave you a sunburn. Stop going outside, you dumb idiot.

i'm really hurt by this because it matters to me what a retard on 4chan who probably bitched about retina displays and optical drives thinks about me.

if any of you can come up with some way that apple could have pushed forward on USB type C without alienating *any* customers, i'd be open to hearing it. keep in mind that there's too little space in the current MBP for type A ports, and even if you gave a stopgap solution (e.g. thicker laptop and a type A port for legacy components), then it would have
1) not satisfied the people who also would've bitched about not having a Thunderbolt port (since a lot of display adapters relied on that), and
2) signaled to everyone that this year's laptop is a stopgap until the next generation when it goes all in.

i'm not here to defend apple for the retarded shit that they do, but when you idiots grasp at anything to complain about it, and it's clear that no other alternative could possibly have worked, i feel obligated to point out that hypocritical bullshit.

It's more likely that Lenovo and other manufacturers will go full Type C in the next year, and /g/ will insist that when Lenovo did it that was smart and foresightful of them, but when Apple did it that was shitty and terrible.

Then it'll come to light that the Lenovo version only allows you to charge from one port, and /g/ will say that of course Apple would let you charge via any port, because Apple consumers are retarded and can't be trusted to plug it into the right port.

Then /g/ will make a point of forgetting that Apple did it first, and that Apple does this a lot (dropping support for something maybe a year or two too early, but ultimately correctly).

i asked you to acknowledge any of three things that an autistic person would never be able to come to terms with. i feel like until you can get to that point, there's no use continuing to browbeat you with this. if you need another (You), here you go buddy.

Hahaha what the fuck is this

Apple fanboy having a rage-induced tantrum?

Fyi, you need to be 18+ to post on this board, but I do enjoy seeing sperg-outs like this. They bump up the board's entertainment value when posted in moderation.
>>
>>57279040
you're definitely reading too much into these posts if you're seeing rage.
>>
>>57279040
Lenovo is definitely going to follow the MBP's lead on this. And I'm neither 2 of the posts, nor underage.

It might be more comforting to imagine that all the posts disagreeing with you are one outlier, but in this case that's not reality.

>And the least expansible one.
I wouldn't say that. It's got, what, 6 TB2 ports? That's about as many PCI-E slots you'll get on a large workstation. Only your Mac Pro will stop being sexy when it has all the fucking PCI-E card adapters hanging off of it. I'd like a 5,1 Mac Pro, but I really can't deal with processors that old for that kind of price premium when I'll be running software in a Windows VM anyway.
>>
>>57278578
That's a shame. Guess Dell it is. I wonder when they'll have an equivalent machine.

New lenovos are the lesser evils atm from my experience in corporate world
The new Zbook g3s have had so much shit with the thunderbolt interface and docking-stations (that are proprietary small planks that cost 200-300 bucks each for a few usb ports, ethernet and two DP out)

Havent tested out Dell, but both the EliteBook 840 G1 display issues and the new G3 with fucking 14 GOD DAMN SCREWS just to take off the back lid for a simple fucking battery / keyboard removal and now the new zbook shit makes me wanna give dell a shot.

I want the old era with the old EliteBook Folios and Probook 8XXX, 6XXX and Thinkpad X20/X30 and good workstations...

Personally for my own computers I just hold out and buy used for now. Maybe something good will come in next refresh with kaby, but seriously i dont recommend the new HP Zbooks or EliteBooks
>>
>>57279852
Yea the dock is pretty bullshit. For 300 bucks I want 10GbE at least, but as I understand it they haven't been updated in a few years. I've heard good things about the Dell Precision laptops, but my last experience with a Dell product was pretty abysmal.

I'd go with Lenovo, but ever since that malware thing I don't trust them.

yes, because it was still magsafe 1, but revision 2 (or i guess revision 1 since the original one wasn't a revision)

The zbook thunderbolt 3 dock is their newest, would be nice but the cable is tight as fuck and has wiring issues so if u move it it will disconnect and is hard so if you move laptop a few cm you will lift your dock aswell and move it, since its so light. doesnt sit well on any desk. nice computers, yeah, but if they dont work whats the point.

i would wait until all manufacturers has successfully flattened out all the issues with "new tech" such as TB3 and usb-c and whatever. Next year maybe it will be more stable.
>>
>>57279750
Protip: MS actually has a magsafe like connector...
>>
>>57280014
not cli based
>>
>>57280091
That's user specific though, there is nothing stopping you from using CLI for all you need. However the majority of people are used to a GUI at this point and will remain with such interfaces likely forever.
>>
>>57280036
Yea, I'm probably not going to make a purchase until next year. Docking doesn't really matter to me, but I can't deal with build quality issues.
>>57280041

>They're trying to get ahead of the innovation curve, eventually having a standard adaptor for every type of connection is going to be a far superior system, however as of right now it's not quite there. But when it is your Mac you buy now will be up to it.

what about no sd card slot, every fucking camera and tons of other stuff use them, now i have to have an sd dongle and a dongle to use the thumbdrive usbs that every office person on earth uses

those two things were retarded to leave off the machine, it costs nothing and would not have made the machine thicker

Professionals are a tiny segment of the market and they keep their machines for decades

Apple doesn't give a fuck about them

Consumerist idiots who call everyone who isn't a purchase-addicted tech geek a luddite/autist keep their machines for months and make up a large portion of the market

Apple does give a fuck about them

>Apple what the fuck are you guys doing? It's like you're deliberately trying to send your brand into the gutter now you got enough money to not need to worry about things any more. All this pandering to the "meme generation" with emoji keyboards and hundreds of dongles for "muh thinness" is making you look like tryhard microsoft trying to be cool and hip when they talk about minecraft.
Well, at least Microsoft got the Xbox - a machine that is pretty cool and doesn't afraid of anything after poor, unfortunate CWC ruined Playstation for everyone.
>>
you can probably still get the old style, when the new macbooks drop they'll move the surplus old stock to the refurb page and shave a few hundred off the price. i just bought a new one last week when i found out the new mbp was going to suck.

That doesn't mean the system is bad, because it's not, I only use my Macbook at home and move from room to room, I'm always careful with the cable and the charger of m 2013 Macbook Pro is as good as new.

Also, there are higher quality third party chargers, one of my friend kept breaking his original one until he bought one with a higher quality cable.

Of course he did. He must do many favors for mommy without getting any GBP's, because he's been a bad boy. Many favors in mommy's strange, big bed that doesn't have any pokemans on the sheets.

I've got a question. Can someone explain to me why Apple seems to increase their price, the more I/O they remove?
>>
>>57286076
Because they're greedy jews and they know they can get away with it. They also don't give a fuck about the computer division anymore since they make most of their money from phones, ipods, ipads and watches now.
