You may as well stick with the thock. The Type S feels mushy and awful.

Don't do it. The HHKB dampening is a terrible implementation. You're better off modding yours with hypersphere dampeners.

Don't try to whitewash it. The stock silencing is awful. Dental banding is awful. Only HS modding comes close to acceptable and even then I'd prefer to keep it unsilenced. Realforce silencing is also ok but not appropriate for case mount.

60% keyboards work really well. Why don't we see any laptops with 60% keyboards?

The new Apple MacBook Pro missing the function keys made me realize this. If you could use the function keys with fn-# then it would at least be like a 60%, but I believe this isn't how it will work, although maybe you could do that with software.

It got me thinking that someone should kickstart a netbook with a 60% keyboard in it. Might as well make it a proper mechanical, too. Nice and thick, but very small and portable.

Stuff like pic related show people are often dissatisfied with laptop keyboards and use a mech with them anyway. That one laptop with the mechanical keyboard aimed at gaymers was kind of poorly done, though.

Thoughts? Just throwing out ideas here and thought I'd post in /mkg/ instead of making a new thread.
>>
After a few weeks of active interest and months of curiosity I finally got to check out a couple mechanical keyboards at a computer store.

I think the MX Blues are the switch for me. It's between them and the Browns but the click just seems right to me.

There's a Rosewill keyboard with MX Blue switches on sale for $80 Canadian. I'm tempted to go for it, but even though I really liked the mechanical keyboards at the store I have a hard time wrapping my head around paying that much for a keyboard, even though I fucking HATE my current keyboard.
>>
>>57269572
Please strongly consider going with greens over blues. My first board was blues and I suffered for two years knowing there was a better version of blues out there. Now I've retired my QuickFire Rapid w/ blues for a Pok3r with Greens and I'm in love with it.

Just build a keyboard with the same layout yourself. I think you can even get a DIY kit on aliexpress.

Though if you want that thocc that comes with the plastic mounting plate of the HHKB, you'll be disappointed. You're not getting that out of discrete switches.
>>
>>57269828

I have no idea what that is.
>>
>>57269572
I'm okay with paying for quality tools I use all the time. My keyboard is no different.
>>
>>57269859

That's the thing. I spend the majority of my life at the keyboard. The majority of the day, every day. And aside from just regular shit and gayming I'm also a writer, so having a good tool has a lot of value. I don't write on paper with a 10 cent Bic ballpoint, why should I use the equivalent keyboard? It's just a mental hurdle spending money on something that has traditionally been very inexpensive.
>>

I always find it funny when people gawk or make fun of me for spending so much on computer peripherals. When they themselves are willing to drop $100 or more dollars on a day at the hair salon or hundreds more on jewellery. Then again I do work with a bunch of vapid roasties.

Is there a backlit ISO TKL with Cherry MX clears/Gateron equivalents (purple?)? UK layout.

Also I don't see much mention of separate mechanical numpads, but again a backlit with clears to put on the left side would be appreciated.

Preferably both would match somewhat, at least in colour if not style.

You can get a new replica IBM 4704 with a layout nearly the same as the HHKB. Capacative buckling springs are the superior switch, anyways.

What is the most quiet mechanical keyboard you could make /mkg/?

I was thinking if you combined a CM NovaToch with these keycaps https://www.massdrop.com/buy/silica-gel-keycap-set

Are you looking for entire sets or just individual keys?
techkeys has some Esc keycaps.

If you want high quality full sets then pimpmykeyboard.com has some in stock like g20, some DSA like patriot, and DCS double shot.

There is also this:
http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/category/cateogry1-name/catId=3982960
Don't let the design of the site fool you its actually legitimate:

You can also find Chinese knock offs on aliexpress or ebay (pic related is one)

>>
>>57272755
If you want dirt cheap pad printed keycaps then

has some. I wouldn't recommend them since they will wear off and shine, and are probably worse then the ones you already have on your keyboard.

When you say cherry do you mean cherry profile (Pic related) or just keycaps that will fit on your cherry board. NPKC, Gateron and Vortex all have cherry profile PBT. There was just a drop on assdrop a couple days ago that had cherry profile PBT keycaps, but you can still buy them off aliexpress or ebay.
If you don't want cherry profile then SP has some sets at pimpmykeyboard.com
There are also group buys on geekhack and deskthority that have some nice designs that you can only get from there

I'm looking at getting my first mechanical keyboard and I can't decide between black and brown MX. I type pretty hard so I'm kinda leaning towards black but it feels like they might be a little heavy for extended wasd use. The browns feel like they'd be more comfortable for playing games, but I'm worried I'd bottom out like crazy while typing normally. It's also hard to tell on a switch tester.

Ducky keyboards have OEM profile and are compatible with everything that has a cherry mount. Tai Hao is basically identical to OEM its just the top row is shorter. If you want a flat uniform look you could go for g20 (pic related) or DSA.
If you want something similar but has a shorter height then cherry profile or DCS is my suggestion. SA profile is taller and cylindrical so it might feel a bit different
>>
>>57273153
Must rubberdome keyboards are tactile and have an actuation force of ~60g. Blacks also have an actuation force of 60g, browns are lighter at 50g. Blacks are one of the most popular mechanical switches even our cash registers have them so finding them for cheap shouldn't be an issue. The tactile bump on browns is pretty underwhelming compared to clears, but if you like linear switches but want a subtle bump then go for browns.

>>
>>57274849
Greens are the exact opposite.

Gateron Greens are soft trash.

Cherry greens are a nice solid click.
>>
>>57276937

Gateron's tolerances are too loose for the two-part stems, making both of their clicky switches sub-par and inconsistent. They also don't bin off the assembly line very effectively, leading to larger inconsistencies within a single bag of switches.

Their browns and linears on the other hand aren't nearly as badly impacted by these things and the smoothness more than makes up for it.

I want a cherry clears kb, preferably tkl, europe, caps don't matter as I plan on getting custom, max 200yros. Preferably ANSI programming layout, but I can work with anything (not a fan of < and > keys on ANSI, but hey)

Obviously if there are sellers that let me configure caps (that don't suck) at checkout, that'd be awsome. (eg. this site lets you color every single cap http://www.maxkeyboard.com/ansi-layout-custom-color-cherry-mx-keycap-set.html )

Anybody know how tough it would be to modify a Ducky One TKL RGB from mx browns to ergo clears?

Thinking de-solder the switches, get a set of clear switches, and swap the stems, then out the rgb now ergo clear stems back in the board. Worried that the dual pcb design with leds is going to cause issues though.
>>
>>57281781
>Why the fuck are so many websites optimized for LE AMERICAN LAYOUT?
Because it's the one that's relevant.
>>
>>57281807
The dual PCBs should come apart if you remove a little connector. One is used for the LEDs, the other for the switches.
>>
>>57281781
Gee maybe it has something to do with the internet as we know it being largely invented in America, where people generally use American keyboards.
>>
>>57281819
After that it would just be a standard de-solder, stem swap, re-solder correct?

My other issue is I can't find anywhere to buy clear stems, so I'm going to have to buy full switches it looks like.
>>
>>57281883
I'd assume so. I've seen pictures of the plate in the RGB Ducky boards and apparently they're transparent acrylic instead of metal, so you might want to be careful with that.

It actually looks nicer to mod to me, since the LEDs are mounted on a separate PCB below the switches.

Are you trying to trick me again?
>>
>>57284148
Just avoid stuff like MX blues/greens and their clones, they're the typical "clicky" switches you instantly think about when you hear "mechanical keyboard".
Reds/blacks are linear and make no sound unless you bottom them out, for instance. Reds are very light, blacks are heavier.
Browns/clears have a bump midway down, just before they activate, but they don't make any additional sound unless you bottom them out either. Clears have a larger, more pronounced bump and require more force to activate.

And if you do find yourself bottoming out, add o-rings under the keycaps. These will prevent them from clattering (or at least somewhat reduce noise).
My Ducky Shine 3 with MX browns makes the same amount of noise as any generic membrane keyboard, it just sounds less cheap and plasticy.

Besides browns I've tried reds and Razer greens (MX blue clone), I feel like reds are a little bit too easy to bottom out.

As for possible keyboard recommendations, CM Storm Rapid-i seems to fit your criteria (80%, backlit, available in browns and reds, affordable) or maybe a Ducky One (available in 100% and 80% versions, a variety of outer case colors, backlight, and switch types, but some versions may be out of your budget)?
>>
>>57284346
Thank you very much. I can avoid bottoming out, especially if I focus on it at night, but I'd probably end up getting O-rings just in case.

Cherry clears are tactile but don't have a click mechanism, so they'll only clack when you bottom them out. Gateron are a different thing entirely, being super light linears (35g).

MOD switches are basically smoother clears.

The most tactile quiet switches are Matias ones, though.

How does the Kailh browns compare to Razer's oranges(also Kailh?)
I'm planing to buy a Lolita Spyder that are available in blues, blacks, and browns. I liked the oranges when I tried out some keyboards at a tech store, but they didn't have browns, so do they feel the similar?
>>
/mkg/, i need some help.

Was planning to buy a red scarf 68, never bought an high end keyboard.
What do you think about it?
>>
>>57295002
if you read through the thread you will see that people think the tada 68 is better
>>

If you want real buckling springs Unicomp sells then new with some custamization options. Id get the utraclassic.

It looks pretty, but Id get the tada 68

Potentially stupid question:

Can o rings be added to any switch type, or just cherry?

Tempted by a non-cherry keyboard, but I wouldn't want to not be able to sound dampen it as much as I can
>>
>>57297723
All cherry clones can use O-rings. Topre and similar have different methods for sound dampening (I believe something like foam padding). Matias switches don't need sound dampening if you get quiet click ones.

Thank you very much for the information.

Ducky Legend has the same metal top plate and is a fullsize board.

Are there any keycap maker out there that provide keycaps with Scandinavian keys? I'd love to buy Miami keys but it seems the 104 key version is in a permanent sold out state.

I'd spend the extra 10 bucks and get it with dye-sub PBT keycaps. The improvement is quality is definitely worth it, plus I think they look better then those pra4nge keycaps

I've got one so if you have any questions feel free to ask (pic related is mine)

they have a slightly higher actuation point, but it doesn't matter since you'd be bottoming out the switches anyway. They feel pretty much the same.

It's a Korean custom called the Duck Viper.

Fully programmable with Cherry switches.

Look what a guy at a computer shop gave me fo' free a few days ago.

It's a Belkin Ergonomic keyboard. It's a lot like the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard but it's black and it says Belkin on it. And it has some "smart" functions that I will never ever use.

Typing on it now. Feels pretty good for being a rubber dome.
>>
Do I bute the bullet and get an ErgoDox, get a Pok3r for $139, or the Tada68?
>>
>>57299984
Ergodox if you're willing to bite the bullet and pay out the ass for speciality keycaps, Tada68 otherwise.
>>
>>57299984
Tada68 no questions

Well lads I tried a lot of different keyboards this week but I like my Dell AT101W the best. I'm just too used to it. The left CTRL key is going out after many thousands of copy/paste and screen lock cycles. So I guess I may have to take it apart and see about replacing the switch.
>>
>>57300194
If I want custom keycaps, though, won't it be a bitch because of the bottom row/right side in general?

>>57301134
It certainly would be.

But why would you want custom keycaps? It already comes with dye-subbed PBT in cherry profile, not much to improve on there.
>>
>>57301134
Not really. The only non-standard keys it has are three 1u keys in between the arrow cluster and spacebar and the 1.75u right shift. If you want to use a uniform profile that isn't an issue at all, you can just use a spare caps lock cap and any three random 1u caps for those. If you want a sculptured profile, well, most group buys will have an option to cover it that shouldn't set you back too much or leave you with a heap of excess caps.

Also, if you buy from PMK, you can add any specific caps you want onto an order for $5 each, when I bought my DSA set for an RS68 from them I just ordered 60% alphas, TKL mods and an extra 1.75u cap marked "Shift" and that covers everything.

>>

no one really uses them but assume they are better for tactility than cherry mx.
>>
>>57305685

They're pretty nice. They're clones of simplified white ALPS so they're super tactile and clicky.

And not irritating high pitched clicky like MX clicks. They're deep and metallic.
