I've always been a windows user due to its user friendly nature. After talking to many people online it seems that the general consensus is to "get gentoo"
I am by no means an experienced PC user however I would be up for the challenge if it really is that much better than windows for my purposes ( gaming, academic work, social media) It is my understanding that linux does not have support for direct x so it does not seem like a viable option to me. What are the arguments for getting gentoo and is it really worth the hassle for someone who is not a computer science expert .I'm willing to listen to what you have to say and if its really that good then I'll consider installing it.

Gentoo is needlessly complicated, it's just a meme that goes around /g/ in order to frustrate people with how cryptic and hard it is to use. Gentoo is a distro that makes you customise everything from scratch, compile almost everything from source and the entire system is pretty DIY. It's an okay distro if you want to learn more about how Linux works, but it doesn't perform that differently compared to the ton other distros out there.

Thanks for the advice man. What would you recommend then? Ubuntu?

Funtoo, Slackware, Exherbo. They're similar to gentoo but less DIY. Ubuntu is babby's first Linux, you can try out if you want.

well I'm building a new pc after the tech fair next year. I'm looking to shell around $1800. But what I don't want to end up with is a very expensive piece of equipment which I can't use due to my lack of knowledge with linux systems.

Read about Linux. Learn how to program in C (you don't need to be a programmer to use Linux, but it helps). Learn what a package manager is, what a DE is, etc may seem overwhelming but it's all pretty basic stuff.

Some distros that just work:
Debian
Mint
Ubuntu (any flavour, Kubuntu, Lubuntu etc.)

You can do everything in these distros the same as in the difficult to install distros like Gentoo and Arch. If you're familiar with Windows then you won't have any problems.
