be a bit sad. he led a company to commit antitrust violations and seriously harmed the internet (well, the web at least) in the 90s. that being said, we've faced bigger threats since then, and the harm he might have caused never came to pass, so this would be like holding hitler's anti-semitism against him in a hypothetical world where he got into art school. if he was kind of inconsequential then we tend to give shitty people a pass.

ultimately gates spent a literal fortune trying to end malaria and whatnot. he made a genuine effort to make the world a better, safer place, and to the previous point he was consequential toward that end. i suspect he could have done more for people like me (i.e. people in the first world), but i recognize that when you have resources and want to have a delta effect on something, you go where the baseline is already kind of low (so there's that much more room for quality of life, lifespan expectancy, etc... to improve)
