There's no planned 4.6Ghz processor for Kaby Lake. The 7600K has a turbo of 4.2Ghz. Picture is fake.

Faggots, I could use some advice.

I'm on a 2500k. This bitch has been good to me for the past 5 years. But unfortunately, it seems to be really heating up during gaming, and then throttling down on me. I had to undo my OC, and now I'm just at stock speeds.

I have it on a 212+ and reapplied thermal compound 2 years ago. I checked yesterday, and there wasn't much crap on the fan.

I don't know what to do. Should I reapply compound and give it another proper dusting or should I bite the bullet and upgrade -- and to what to?
>>
>>57244655
> Intel sockets
KEK
>>
>>57244659
What thermal compound do you use?
>>
>>57244676
Arctic silver, I think. Again, only 2 years old. I remember, that installing the 212 was a fucking bitch. Maybe I'm a noob, but that shit was fucking annoying. Are you supposed to re-apply paste every 2 years, and dust the shit of the heatsink?

Or do 45nm processors just run hot? I'm getting 43C idle right now, and it goes up to like 70+C under load -- on stock speeds. That's not normal, right?
>>
>>57244709
> Arctic silver
Reapply, then get a superior thermal paste like the Prolimatech PK-3 or PK-1.

> Are you supposed to re-apply paste every 2 years, and dust the shit of the heatsink?
I wouldn't know. I've never done it.

> Or do 45nm processors just run hot? I'm getting 43C idle right now, and it goes up to like 70+C under load -- on stock speeds. That's not normal, right?
Not sure.
I have the server socket from one generation earlier than yours, though.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
>>
>>57244757
I appreciate your input nonetheless.

I think maybe, it's getting just becoming time to upgrade. But I don't know what to do. I keep reading that Intel hasn't put out a good processor since Haswell. That Moore's law ended and they're just doing incremental bumps in IPC.

Then I hear all these fags hyped for AMD 'Zen'. If Intel is slowing down, then what hope does AMD have of making a good product. Also, will their 8 core/16 thread offering be of any use to me, as a gamer?

Last I heard, games weren't multithreaded very well. But then again, I'm not too current.
>>
>>57244659
What are the temps?
>>
>>57244799
you either reapply the cooler with new paste and the temps should will return normal, or upgrade to 6600k and youll already get nice 50% performance boost
>>
>>57244823
50% are you sure it's that high? Damn. I thought people didn't like Skylake cause it didn't rise much above Broadwell. What do you think about AMD Zen? Do think the AMD fags have a point. Are they on the verge of making a come back? An 8C/16T Zen sounds really cool to upgrade. All those threads....
>>
who here waiting for kabylake-x?

Thank you.

> I think maybe, it's getting just becoming time to upgrade. But I don't know what to do. I keep reading that Intel hasn't put out a good processor since Haswell. That Moore's law ended and they're just doing incremental bumps in IPC.
That's true.

> Then I hear all these fags hyped for AMD 'Zen'. If Intel is slowing down, then what hope does AMD have of making a good product. Also, will their 8 core/16 thread offering be of any use to me, as a gamer?
Just because Intel slowed down, doesn't mean that AMD has to let them keep their advantage.

Hopefully they step up their game and create both more powerful and efficient CPUs.

Also, whether or not you think it's unnecessary, 8 core/16 thread is nice to have and has no incredibly adverse effects.

> Last I heard, games weren't multithreaded very well. But then again, I'm not too current.
I wouldn't know, I don't really play games.

>>57244864
>>57244823
Don't listen to this puke, it's only about a 25 percent increase in performance and maybe a 50 percent increase in efficiency.

Also, the 6600k isn't that much of a substantial upgrade.

Personally, I'd upgrade to a dual socket LGA 2011-v3 and put some ES CPUs in there.

For you, though, the advice is nearly the same - get a 2011-v3 motherboard and an ES CPU. The ES CPU may not perform better than the commercial variant, but it'll outperform LGA 1551 chips for the same price easily.
>>
>>57244864
You should not stress about future, it won't be anything special, at best intel will reduce the pricing 5-10%. I just checked it should be around 50% on highest
>>
>>57244924
Not me.

Just want manufacturers to make Kaby Lake servers already.
>>
>>57244659
>>57244709
What you want to do is buy yourself a noctua heat sink.

Any of them, it doesn't matter. Once you've used their mounting system, you will never go back.

Fresh AS5, check all your case fans are working correctly

Not throw voltz at that motherfucker until it's hitting 87-89c in intel burn test and clock it up as high as it'll go on dem voltz and start saving for zen
>>
>>57244823
>50%
Pfft, fuck off faggot. Maybe 30% clock for clock.

And then the 2500K gets 300-500mhz higher clocks.
>>
>>57244136
Because it has quite literally no IPC improvement over the Skylake chip I already own. The leaked benchmarks show performance entirely in line with the 6700K, clock for clock. The out of the box boost is entirely down to the higher stock boost clock. They won't overclock any better, because they never do.

>muh architectural refinement
>muh process improvements

Yeah, still waiting on those 5GHz on air 4790Ks that they promised everybody.
>>
>>57245047
Will buy Noctua if it's easier to install. I don't want to install a 212 ever again. Will also wait for Zen to make my buying decision. I'll miss my Sandy ;_;
>>
>>57245047
Thanks broseph for the other advice. You seem skilled.

Respect.
>>
>>57244944
Hey bro, I'm another anon, with 2600K. I'm interested in games, but also some video processing, 3d rendering and such. Do you think I would get a substantial boost by getting a new CPU+mobo?

As somebody who's fucked around with other heatsinks in the past, when i finally went noctua i was kicking myself. The extra cost is offset by them coming right out of the box with the best fans you can buy anyway, and even if they didn't i would sell a kidney before i went back to the 212s or be quiets shit system.

There's no reason not to wait for zen. Either it'll be better and you buy it, or it'll be good enough to force intel to drop prices, or it'll bump up the haswell/skylake used market.

Be happy with the 2500K for now anyway, you're really not missing much if it's just a gaming/general use PC.

>>
>>57245149
Whether or not you're willing to go ES, you're going to get a substantial increase, although I highly recommend getting ES CPUs.

Can I convince you to spend more on a motherboard and case?
ES E5-2628L V4s are cheap as fuck right now.

Spend $400 on a dual socket motherboard and $100-$200 on a bigger case, and you'll be set for at least eight years.
>>
>>57245202
You want me to buy a Xeon? Are there any downsides?
Also, does winshit have problems with multi-socket motherboards?
>>
>>57245232
> You want me to buy a Xeon?
Yes.

> Are there any downsides?
The ONLY downside is less than stellar single core performance.

If you compare a similarly priced ES Xeon to an LGA 1551 CPU, however, the performance is nearly the same or somewhat lower or higher.

> Also, does winshit have problems with multi-socket motherboards?
Maybe.

Don't tell me you have a Wangblows version other than 7 or the server editions?
>>
>>57245274
I have 7 but want to steal 10 for muh durrx twelve.
>>
>>57245274
>>57245290
Relevant.

I'm the 2500k gamer guy. I've been holding out on my trusty 7 for as long as possible. However, it's increasingly becoming an untenable position because you need 10 for the (lol) Xbox Games on PC. Right now, I wan't to play Gears of War 4 but I can't.

Does anyone know of a workaround? I'd like to stick to 7 for a decade like XP. 7 is the new XP...
>>
>>57245290
Please, don't.

DX12 isn't worth it in the slightest.

If you want DX12, though, be my guest, but please use Windows Server 2016.

I wouldn't, though, and don't. I'd recommend Windows Server 2008 R2, or alternatively Windows 7 if you like getting fucked.

Vulkan works on all Windows platforms, right?
>>
>>57245334
Use Windows Server 2008 R2 instead. It has guaranteed support until 2020. Then, run Wangblows 10 or Wangblows Server 2016 in a virtual machine.

I don't know if it would work, though.

Also, just steal all your shit.
>>
>>57245339
>>57245373
One more thing, thanks to another Anon, I've learned about http://www.win2008r2workstation.com/240-days-evaluation/
You can use the information provided there to make Windows Server 2008 R2 more like Wangblows 7.

Thank you for providing your insight on how to avoid the AIDS from Windows as much as possible.

However, like I said, I'm in this for the vidya. I'm concerned that these Server OSs won't work with my graphics card drivers or games. Is this unfounded? I'd like to use Win Server 16 over 10, if I'm cutting back on the STDs. But I just need to know that the vidya will work.
>>
>>57245393
Oh shit, I mean http://www.win2008r2workstation.com/
>>
>>57245339
90% of 2016 titles run on directx 9c.
Wanna know why? It works on every fucking cumputer since windows 2000.
>>
>>57245471
Yeah, that's totally true. Microshit is introducing crossplay/Xbox Anywhere on the PC because the Xbone tanked in the sales. In other words, most Xbox games here on out will be PC ported. The caveat? They're in Directx12. They have me by the balls.
>>
>>57245448
You're welcome.

There's no Windows Update bullshit that you have to go through with Windows Server 2008 R2, either, to the best of my knowledge.

I have it on one of my partitions, but I honestly don't use it that much.

Anyways, should you choose to run one of the Server operating systems, you'll have to do some work to get it completely compatible, but it definitely should be once you're done.

Also, should you choose to run Windows Server 2016, understand that the most recent tutorial is of Windows Server 2012 R2: http://www.win2012workstation.com/ as Windows Server 2016 was LITERALLY released last month.

They should be completely compatible, though. The only difference between the Server and the consumer operating systems is that there's "less" botnet, and there's only the bare essentials, so you have to install all the shit you want by hand or via software if you're lazy. At least, that's how it is with 2008 R2.

>>57245471
So that's a yes?

Vulkan runs on all Windows platforms that still have support?

>>57245500
Shit nigger, what games are so important to you that you're willing to use Windows 10?
>>
Only 4 core, and they're still doing 2 at the low end? Ugh.

If they'd stop wasting half the core on awful GPUs I wouldn't use in a good desktop build, that'd be grand.

We'll see. Zen will put the sweat on them again. They need that.
>>
>>57245567
Hmm.. Mostly Gears of War and Halo. Halo Wars (RTS) comes out next year. Maybe I can relive my casual days when they start releasing the main entries of the Halo series on PC.

Maybe I should just get an Xbone. I dunno. Yeah man, I'm still a casual. The years went by, but the casualness never left me.
>>
>>57245630
Yeah, Xbox Ones are kind of cheap nowadays. I kind of want one to supplement my now aging Xbox 360.

That being said, couldn't you just use an emulator?
