Just hit a wall on a personal project of mine, trying to gain rights to an old school computer of mine while trying to keep all the software, but the thing is protected hard. Is my best bet booting a portable linux from a usb to take what i need? your thoughts?

With nothing but this to go on the best general advice I can give is:
yank the hard drive
put it in a machine running something compatible with the file system on the disk
Pull whatever you want off the disk
format, put it back in the original machine, re-install OS
