>Then there’s the laptop’s overall case temperatures during everyday use. I’m using this Dell lightly most of the time, running up to 10 tabs in Firefox, Skype, and usually Word. Even so, the laptop’s metallic back-casing gets to about 40 degrees Celsius on a daily basis. Again, if you tend to keep the laptop on a desk, that’s not going to bother you much, but I for one tend to use the laptop on my lap most of the time or on my thighs while lying on the sofa or even in bed. This causes my legs to sweat during the summer days. The experience is much nicer during the autumn and winter months, but for those of you living in hot environments, keep in mind that this laptop tends to get warmer than most others with daily use.

on dell xps
The fan is the worst, it always kicks in when I am charging the laptop, even though the temperature isn’t much different when running on battery. I’ve tried the latest BIOS update, played with Dell Command Power Manager, but to no avail. Plug the charger in, the fan starts whirring like crazy, take it out, it’s all silent. Dell forum is full of similar complaints but no one seems to be doing anything even after all this time.
Such a beautiful machine, marred by such an trivial issue. It’s a shame.

Heaty, noisy, shallow keys, screen problems, low wifi signal affecting all dell xps 13" machines with fhd display.

Qhd display doesn't have brightness problem but it has all the other problems.

Dell, more like Hell
>>
I just can't take people that use Windows seriously. At most Silicon Valley companies, including Google and Facebook, admitting to using Windows in an interview is an automatic dismissal.

You just can't do serious programming work on Windows.

That has nothing to do with the display. The FHD version probably comes with the Broadcomm WLAN card. I use the Intel one and besides based Linux compatibility, it also picks up signal way better.

>>57237476
>No, the guy is right, the XPS only has automatic brightness adjustment
No, it doesn't. It has that BY DEFAULT, the QHD version can have it disabled by reflashing the firmware (literally a 1-click .exe).

>If we were talking business models then sure, but their consumer stuff is well known to be absolute crap.
Ok dude, show me the failure rate for the XPS 13. I don't want to be a dick and make you scour the Internet for some pdf, but the XPS is well built. Every review I read pointed out this, and after owning one I agree.
>>
"Display

One of the main reasons why users might select the XPS 13 is its display. Dell uses a panel with an especially thin frame and so can incorporate a display with a diagonal of 13.3-inches in a compact device which usually houses a 12-inch display. Dell offers two options: the FHD display (1920x1080 pixels) with matte surface of our test model or a QHD+ panel with glossy surface and touch support. The first one is favored in the offered entry-level configurations (max. 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM), while QHD+ editions are available with 512 GB SSDs and 16 GB RAM in addition. Apart from these aspects, there is another criterion, which is not apparent for the user at the first glance. It is called CABC (Content Adaptive Brightness/Backlight Control). Both display variants include this energy-saving solution out-of-the-box.

>However, it can be disabled in the QHD+ edition "

Source notebookcheck dell xps 2016

the new xps 13 has had several problems.
1. blue screen of death multiple times
2. had to kill windows and reinstall
3. my wifi goes on and off and requires a reboot
4. resolution is off when i plug into a monitor

I purchased the top of the line specs of the XPS13 from the Microsoft store online a week ago - i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB HD. After installing Win 10 Pro and Office 365, I had a problem with the computer not going to sleep about 50% of the time. It kept turning back on about 1 second after putting it to sleep mode. There was also a frequent message that the graphics card stopped working but was automatically reset. Brought it to the Microsoft store and they decided to replace the machine.

On the second day, the new computer also didn't go to sleep on occasion (less frequently than the first one) but on the 3rd day, the computer wouldn't shut down (not just sleep) after 3 attempts. Also had the same message about the graphics driver resetting automatically. The next day (today), the computer loss connectivity to my WIFI network for no apparent reason. My other computers were connecting fine. The system wound not automatically reconnect to my WIFI network even after rebooting twice but after manually resetting the wireless adapter, it worked again.
For a premium laptop costing over $2K, this is simply unacceptable.

but there are too many glitches and Dell is ignoring all of them...essentially turning it into an expensive lemon of a computer. Simply google this computer with the words "wifi issues"or "track pad" issues and you can get a sense of the significant problems. My laptop has significant wifi card issues which keeps it from connecting to any network that is not extremely strong. My track pad constantly freezes and I find I have to constantly do hard reboots on it to get it to work...on a computer that is less than 2 months old!!! AND a computer that is priced near top of range!

>>57237737
1st is actually a valid point, but it makes sense. I had to figure this out by myself as well. The battery only charges when it's under 90% to avoid small charges that would lessen the battery life
2nd is Windows problems, don't care.
3rd, again, never experienced, could be a bunch of stuff.
4th was the only actual flaw I've noticed on the XPS, it has a noise when the charger is on. It's not coil whine, but it's still annoying.
5th was laughable

I mean I can post a bunch of people complaining about their broken macs as well.

>most use it will get is some hipster writing facebook status updates in starbucks
>hipster

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

You know this would be a nice ITX case. Microsoft would probably make more money off selling a modified version to be used as an ITX case than they would off selling an xbox.

I remember just wanting to do what they advertise: Take a PDF, Circle something or write a note in fluid movements. It was amazing that their native "preview" app was so deficient that it couldn't even capture handwriting. And adobe reader was also a joke in terms of user experience. Navigating menus and generally dealing with an OS that had so many layers of shit piled on shit led me to sell the device after it sat on my shelf for a year. I know why microsoft needs to maintain such a legacy of compatibility but I can't go back there from macOS I now see.

My macbook unibody from late 2008 is still chugging after hours every single day but it's time for an upgrade in a few days.

Hasn't been for a loooong time. It was already over the time they switched to Intel. The Adobe suit ran so fucking bad, running a prior version using Rosetta was faster than running the Native Intel version for fucks sake.
Windows has been better at running the Adobe suite than OS X for ages now.

Well currently Touch ID is powered by a custom ARM coprocessor, that provides a large array of trusted secure computing features to iOS devices. This is a feature Apple have obviously spent many years working on this, and it seems unlikely that they would have invested the same effort in doing so for the Mac. Instead opting to just bring the ARM based iOS solution to the Mac. Makes sense.

Ask yourself the question, what would hitting the escape key do when you are looking at a sheet with a cancel button? It would dismiss the sheet, One would assume hitting the 'Cancel' button on the "touch bar" would do the same.

Having a soft button in the same place as the esc key allows the OS to provide better context to the user. It seems obvious when I look at it, but everyone is freaking out.
>>
What happens when you have two programs open at once? Say I'm in pages and have that as my focus but am also listening to music in iTunes do I have to move to iTunes to turn the volume down now?
>>
>>57250631
There's a black button all the way to the left but its a bit hard to see.

I imagine that will cycle through inputs.
>>
>>57239438
That is stunningly ugly.
>>
>>57250556
in understand that in exactly that case scenario, having only the cancel option is the best approach possible

but that does not justify removing the ESC key

to make matters worse, all this stupid bar shit is like that just because they don't want to kill the ipad

this problem doesn't even exist on a tactile display
>>
>>57250631
Most probably it'll be context sensitive so that if an application isn't taking full control of it, it'll just be the usual function key row. Only difference will be that the buttons won't be physical.

>>
>>57252096
yes, absolutely unthinkable. if any tech company ever tells you that they're not hiring, they're either in a financial tailspin OR they didn't want you.

and at the scales of compensation that we're talking about (income of 6 figures, add 30% of that cost on the company's side because they're footing the bill for health care etc...) then paying $10k for moving expenses (and that's generous) is trivial.

They said the OLED touch bar will be used to display application-specific content, so obviously there will be some sort of API for application developers to print content to that bar

Using said API, it shouldn't be too difficult to program function keys back into it... including... THE ESCAPE KEY

Plus if this API is at firmware level like for other hardware components of previous macs (e.g. fan control through the SMC), it will be possible to support the touch bar in other operating systems.
