Goddammit, this thread made me dig up a screenshot I made in 2012 when Firefox was top-tier in terms of customizability. I clearly remember thinking I'd never use Chrome, but I guess times have changed. Looking back at it I remembered just how good it can be made to look, with no wasted space and ultra-functional extensions like a upload/download speed meter in the status bar and themes that ranged from light and unobtrusive to full-on ricer visuals.

Press F to pay respects to a great piece of software that died a horrible death.

Except there are extensions to change all of that. This was the beauty of Firefox back then - nothing was static and you could customize just about everything to your liking. Firefox always froze when loading heavy pages, nothing about firefox changed in that regard. The internet changed and firefox remained mostly the same on the html side because changing the backend of firefox breaks addons and every time they break addons everyone throws a fit.

The addons everyone loves so much *are* the problem with firefox, they're dragging it down. They cause memory leaks, issues with responsiveness, they break frequently whenever mozilla changes anything in the backend, they're mostly incompatible with multiprocess support, and they're not even very secure anyway.
