Updating from Cyanogenmod 11 (Android 4.4.4) to Cyanogenmod 12 (Android 5.0) made my device faster, as did the upgrade from Cyanogenmod 13 to Cyanogenmod 13 (Android 6.0). I am fully convinced that this idea of "updating your device makes it slower" is a meme perpetuated by Apple users, because Apple hasn't been adding performance improvements in updates.
