Is it due to throttling? I've heard that undervolting helps to run at higher clock speeds as it makes the card cooler.

I'd be surprised if you can really no much further than 1150 - GCN up until polaris really doesn't like high clocks for a multitude of technical reasons. For reference the average overclock for hawaii (which is to say, the chip in the 290, 290x, 390 and 390x) is 1150.

My 290x does 1200 core but at truly eye-watering voltage (nearly 1.4v). Luckily I have some crazy air cooling.

My R9 290 can't reach 1050Mhz without problems, 1000Mhz can easily reach it without problems, but a little more and I get a tons of artifacts in a lot of games

Hawaii can be weird to overclock - you might need to actually raise the memory overclock as the core and memory are tied in some ways.

Though at the end of the day the 290 is the gimped chip which is why it runs slower so you might've simply lost the silicon lottery hard.

Last value if Im not mitaken was like 1050/1350 failing with +50mV. It's a Sapphie Dual-X with 957/1250 as stock values

I'm suprislingly able to get my mini 1060 to 1999mhz boost clock and like +400 to core. My 3d mark graphics score is about 78% of a stock 1070 now. Very pleased since I got the 1060 for 250 right when it launched.

Since I wanted gow4 I was going to sell it and buy a 1070 but pc multi player is dead. Then I was gonna sell it and buy a refurbished fury x from newegg for 311 us but decided I didn't really need freesync. Maybe I'll upgrade to vega?

It's Athlon II X3 460 @ 4.0 GHz (oc from 3.4)

It's running very well tho, much more stable than my previous 3.9 GHz with 1.625v setup.
Temps are also fine, torture testing couldn't get it above 62°C and it never gets close to 50°C under normal circumstances.
So... eh. It works, why change.

What is the best way to stress/stability test a GPU oc?

Thats only based upon the belief that leakier chips can clock higher. Now while there is an element of truth to that these days its not really true given the advances in manufacturing of the silicon.

Far, far too many things taken as gospel in the overclocking world are based on really old data. See also: FSB overclocking for cpus - its basically worthless now unless you are squeezing the last 100mhz out of your chips yet still taken as fact that its better than multiplier overclocking.

See also: EVGA were selling 980ti's based upon ASIC binning and there was virtually no difference between the final clocks the various ASIC quality chips.

That's cool, gow4 is objectively shit anyways. I'm aiming for decent arma3 1440p performance. I'm getting 2080-2100 Mhz boost, in benchmarks I get around 90% of a stock 1080's score. In dx11 games it translates to about -10fps in 1440p, I'm very happy with these results but it won't be able to do 1440p ultra in demanding games. I'm torn between selling my monitor and hopping back to 1080p or getting a 1080FE

With cinema settings on and everything on max, you can see red-blob artifacts from overclocking faster than you see them on the witcher

Nvidias game works shit, hairworks on witcher 3 eats up a lot of GPU power, I don't know if batman has shadowworks or whatever the fuck else they have but gameworks in general is a graphical hog, try turning that off or some other stuff down

my 1070 sits at 2100MHz stable as, had it at 2177MHz but backed it off, it does have a NZXT g10 on it though

it's just adequate for my 4k screen, I'd really like another, or a 1080

also have my i5 6600k @4.5GHz and RAM @ 3100MHz
