For me the fact that it doesn't stand up too well in your lap is a near deal breaker on a train commute. The second you stand up to let someone by you you have to use two hands to prevent the surface from deep sixing on the floor. The pen is great but should be able to be stored in the tablet, instead of the shitty magnet clasp. Windows isn't too friendly with high DPI so programs like horizon view will crash when connecting from the surface without a registry hack and a special out-dated version if the client. Windows hello is very convenient when it works but doesn't always initialize, thus prompting for a password or pin. There is a bug in the surface pro 4 where the touch screen stops responding and only recommended fix is to restart. This happened to be about 5 times in four months. The power adapters are expensive for what they are, and even so they have an issue with many of them where the secondary charging port stops working. Third party chargers exist but are shit. The sp4 requires a case (unless you live in a padded cell) and all the cases add a good amount of weight and either block airflow, make the pen magnet connection weak, or make the kickstand difficult to engage. The i7 sp4 is the only model worth the money since the iris graphics are so much better than what comes with the i5, i3 and m5, but even the power of the tablet, the nice screen, sleek frame, and digitizer it's not worth it (at least to me) for all the hassle. A lighter Thinkpad yoga with digitizer, without BIOS whitelisting, and with a smaller fucking bezel would be perfect.

What's a good tablet-like device for taking handwritten notes that autoconvert into text? We use what's essentially a wiki for meeting notes and it would be nice to use a digital pen.

Thankfully I didn't pay as much as you but I still fell for the Mac meme. I bought an A1465 (aka mid-2012) Macbook Air after my first internship between second and third year university. I had loads of money and thought my T500 was too heavy to carry around campus, so I "needed" an ultraportable.

Fuck the Macbook sucked. Basically paid $1000 for a glorified netbook. The processor was balls slow, the 64GB of internal storage was nearly impossible to upgrade, and the RAM was indeed impossible to upgrade. And coming from a 1680x1050 screen on the Thinkpad, I was not prepared for how awful 1366x768 was. Thankfully, there is no shortage of Macfags, and I was able to sell the computer a year later for about 80% what I paid for it. Bought a used Elitebook 2540p and despite the low screen resolution, I was (and still am) very happy with it.

A shitty $1000 laptop I bought at Walmart in 2007 (might have been HP). I used it for porn in bed for a few months, then sold it for $500.

Jesus I have so many of these in the field and hardware wise they spin like a top! The real issue is windows 10. That piece of shit OS cannot be controlled if it's a retail copy. You have to spend so much time to set them up and locking things down it's almost not worth the effort. Updates suck and they include firmware updates so sometimes when they feel like it M$ will jam a firmware update which locks up half of my field devices. I've since switched them all to metered connections but even that's not a global rule set! You have to assign that setting to all wireless networks. Also the power options blow dick! I have to edit the registry every fucking time to unlock the correct power options from the UI. Fucking default for powering down the HDD and going to sleep is 1 fucking minute! How the shit has Microsoft fucked up such a respectable piece of hardware with such piss poor software?!

I think it is still inexcusable for a product to have such low-grade performance but cost so much. It shouldn'tafter if it's the cheapest one in the lineup. If I buy a $40,000 Lexus, it damn well better improve upon the $28,000 Accord/Camry/Altima I could otherwise buy, regardless of whether it is the cheapest Lexus or not. Same goes for Macbooks- they SHOULD be better than the competition when they cost 30% more, you shouldn't expect the same shit for a higher price.

I supposed another lesson I learned from the Macbook was that impulse buys will almost inevitably lead to remorse, and for anything that costs more than a trivial sum, you should do your research.

I would say mine is a gaymen laptop. I bought it when I was in my last year of college. I spent 12-16 hours a day on campus (commuter) and wanted something to game on in down time. Now that I have graduated and working the 9-5 life it has become a dust gathering machine. The worst part is the specs arent really good enough for me to sell or trade it to anyone and it be worth it.

I still use and 1st gen Windows RT tablet, BUT ONLY for office. Thats it. Its great for that, especially onenote. Everything else except GBA roms with an xbox360 controller on it suck. Even the web browser os useless. I got it from my mom who got it from my grandma who died however, so no money into it.
