Lamy master race. With EF nib and Schwarzblau ink. Looking for change to some other ink. It has to be well legible on white paper and not too pale. I was thinking about:
>Waterman's Intense Black
>Parker's Royal Blue
>Pilot's Chiku Rin
>Pilot's Yama Budo
>Pilot's Momiji
>Pelikan's Jade Light Green (possibly too light for my taste)
>Diamine's Oxblood
Any recommendations?

I prefer mechanical pencils because I like the ability to erase. Currently using mostly my Kuru Toga Uni, also have a Grapgear 500, 1000 and a Rotring 600 (which is probably my favorite)
Considering buying a Lamy Safari
>>
>>57206818
Lamy Al-Star > Safari (both are the sameish price i think)
I miss my al-star I lost it in the student lounge area at my school
>>
>>57206927
>Lamy Al-Star > Safari
Would appreciate some reasoning behind that. I like the looks of the Safari more.
The Lamy Joy 15 looks cute as well but it has weird nib. Might be fun for amateur calligraphy though?
>>
>>57205861
Indirectly yes. It makes your hand less cramped so certain movements will be less jittery

Got my hands on a Lamy 27 black/chrome by accident.
It was incredibly messy but I cleaned it and the filling mechanism still works, though I haven't been able to figure out how to take that apart so I could clean it more thoroughly.
Also the nib wobbled a bit but it was quite easily thightened.

Bought some Lamy ink and writing becomes so wonderful.
>>
>>57206981
Al-Star weights more than the Safari (22g vs 17g), so better in-hand feel for most.
>>
LAMY Safari pen or GTFO. The best writing instrument out there.

>>
>>57209193

To be honest, Lamy's steel 1.1mm and 1.5mm stub nibs are probably the best cursive italic nibs you can get outside of having a gold nib custom ground.

I have high end pens from Omas, Pelikan, and Sailor and yet I still carry and use a Safari with a 1.5mm stub and customized feed (I made the ink channels deeper to increase the ink flow to keep up with the nib) regularly.
>>
>>57205861
If your handwriting is bad then it will force you to get better because the pen will make it actually illegible otherwise.
>>

>>57206811
Jinhao and Baoer are the same company, just like Toyota and Lexus. Baoer pens are usually knockoffs of more expensive pens (i.e. Baoer 338 = Parker Sonnet, Baoer 79 = Mont Blanc Starwalker) while Jinhaos are designed separately. I've had a pretty good experience with Baoer. The 338 is a tank.

I've been using an Al-Star for more than a year, somehow broke it and then switched to a Safari. I can definitely say that I like the Safari much more because it's much lighter and just feels better while writing because you don't have that much weight in your hand

Ok /pen/ got a question with no real idea how to find the answer.

I need a pen, not so much for writing, but I love drawing with ink. I use a crow quill and what is basicly a g nib, so i'm looking into pens that can take these nibs, what i'm looking at is about 5$

However, I also want a pen just to use as a pen, and my handwriting is at best small, so I want the smallest nib that isn't a pain in the dick to use (tryed useing a crow quill to write for a while jesus did that suck)

Then I got to thinking, what if I just got a normal pen that was good enough I didn't need to replace the nibs?

So here I am, looking for a cheap pen that I don't need disposable ink cartridges for that is as thin as possible.
>>
>>57206468
Roher & Klingner Scabiosa is a fantastic ink.
J. Herbin Pousierre de Lune is nice too but the new formulation (well it's been like 5 years now lol) is shit compared to the old one.

I like the blue-black uniball signo um151 pens. They write very cleanly, sometimes they are scratchy but only if you get something fricative on the ball like eraser shavings or white-out (which will be gone if you scribble on scrap paper for a second) but the 0.28mm is absolutely fantastic for my physics work

Pilot SuperGrip F.
>>
>>57206468

Lamy turqouise. It's a bit light, but it's such a great colour and not too expensive.

>>57211642

There's not really any fountain pens that are good for drawing. Most only write when the nib is aligned with the paper and when you're drawing you're always changing your angles and grip on the pen. Whenever I try to sketch with a fountain pen I get frustrated because it's nothing like a pencil or even a micron.

I have a lot of pens. My daily driver is a Lamy 2000 ef with Lamy turqouise, my backup is a Lamy 2000 f with diamine autumn oak/ancient copper. If I want a pen that will always write I'll use my f Pilot Vanishing Point with Noodler's black or my TWSBI Eco.

Their ballpoint refills are pretty good. I have a Lamy safari ballpoint and I usually use it when I need something I know will work. But you have to use their own refills. I've had two packs of 5 refills, and I've gone through 4 or 5 over the last couple years, but I didn't use it every day.

i did see they have proprietary cartridges, but they aren't expensive and are available from pretty much every stationary store,
and i was after the rollerball version just as it's something different, to using ballpoints my whole life, and can't get on with fountain pens, as my hand gets covered in ink.
>>
>>57215856
>>57215882

He's right. My handwriting is just standard cursive like kids in North America used to be taught in elementary school.

It's the stub or cursive italic nibs that make it look nice (if you use your nib at a 45 degree orientation to the page so that going bottom left to top right is the thinnest line you can make and top left to bottom right is the thickest line you can make).
>>
>>57216138

I definitely misspoke. I was talking about the rollerball.
>>
>>57211221

I like that black studio. I have one in imperial blue and it's a great pen.
>>
>>57216230

It's a great pen, it's just too bad that Lamy's plastic feeds really need to be modified to flow enough ink to keep up with their amazing stub nibs.
>>
>>57216318
>any Lamy nib
>amazing
Yeah no, they are fine but definitely not amazing.
Now an Italix nib on the other hand is amazing for the price.

>>
>>57216937

I have an Italix medium cursive italic, a TWSBI 1.5 stub from before they switched to shitty nibs, and an Omas 360 with a bold cursive italic custom ground by Mottishaw and my Lamy 1.1mm and 1.5mm stubs are still GREAT as long as you get a good one (there is a fair bit of variance between nibs with Lamys, luckily the GO store I go to let's me pick my nib from their entire 1.5 stub supply).
>>
>>57217039

The FP store. Fucking auto correct.
>>
>>57217039
Again not saying that they are bad just not amazing. Also lucky on the twsbi 1.5 since they are no longer made. I actually ended up putting a eversharp flex nib into my vac which required some rather serious modification in order to work properly.

>flex nib

No wonder you don't like the Lamy stub nibs. For people who use cursive italics or stubs with a 45 degree slant, too much flex is really bad because you will start catching edges of the nib or inside edges of the tines on the paper.

If you like flex, Lamy stub nibs are definitely not for you.

actually I do like stubs I just don't think they are all they are made out to be. I actually just got into flex recently as a side effect of buying and restoring pens. that nib came from a irreparable Eversharp gold seal oversized. The nipple was destroyed and the collar was chipped so I transferred the nib and feed into my vac 700.

I actually use a fountain pen as my regular pen.

I use a German made "charged green" LAMY Al-Star and my usual ink is a japanese ink (produced by Pilot) called "Iroshizuku kon-peki" which is a beautiful blue.

I use it because I find it very enjoyable to write with, so it's worth the extra money.

>>57209193
LAMY Safari is a great cheap pen. Great engineering and production. It is a solid pen.

>>57217824
>Visconti or go home.

Do you have a Patek Philippe watch as well? Sure you get a pen that have been worked on a lot by craftmen and that is both functional and beautiful, but it can't be a daily pen that you walk around with all day. It's only a special occations thing. Maybe something to have present on your desk to sign important documents and make a whole ritual out of it, but if you use it as a daily pen then you have more money than sense. People have put a lot of time into that, get a reasonable pen as a daily pen.
>>
>>57217930
My daily carry set is a wide range of pens in a FC Wrap.
Twsbi Eco , Pilot Metro, Lamy Safari, Lamy 2000, and a Visconti Metropolis. The Pilot and the safari are the pens that I use as loaner pens for those interested in trying them out.
As for the alchemy I was joking, I don't think I will ever own a pen that expensive though I am serious about Montblanc being seriously overpriced for what you get, but you have to pay for the name as well I guess.

Was just memeing, but are they really that overrated?
I always thought they were considered one of the top brands.
>>
>>57217733

Fair enough. My first love is stub and cursive italic nibs and the Lamy 1.5 is probably my favorite really wide stub/ci nib.

Gold nibs start to become very difficult to make work for stubs and cursive italics much above 1.0mm. I need to find a nib grinder in Toronto to customize a couple of 3B gold nibs for me where I can show then in person how I write so they understand what I need.

I also had to send back my first Italix cursive italic nib because it has been cut at a slight angle and thus would corner catch constantly used at a 45 degree orientation to the page and 45 degree vertical slant from the page (which is how I write).

The old TWSBI 1.5 from their diamond 580 line is great too, but the pen flows ink like a fire hose and isn't postable. Otherwise it is a great pen.

I don't think I can even use flex nibs because of the slant I use when I write, actually.

They are good pens don't get me wrong but for the price you can find far better pens. When you buy a Montblanc you are paying a premium on the name and any images that come with it. If I tell someone I use a montlblanc they instantly get an image in their head. Visconti or Aurora, not so much so you can get a slightly lower price for the same or higher quality,
>>57218458
you would probably like my vac then since the flex nib is kind of special. I am pretty sure it is an oblique cut flex nib. It needs a very odd angle to write correctly but I like it.
reference shitty ms paint drawing for the angles.
>>
>>57218455

Basically, Montblanc is well known by non-pen people because they spend a lot of money on marketing.

Omas, Pelikan, Visconti, Aurora, Sailor and others are well known by fountain pen users because they spend a lot of money on making great fountain pens.
