- client+server architecture
server:
- back-end, handles actual playback
- handles playlist
- controlled via DBus/IPC
- written in C or something else that compiles to native code
- optional web interface
front-end:
- console control tool, launches the back-end on demand

It even has many existing terminal, web and desktop apps.
